Product Overview

Barricade 65WG is a pre-emergent herbicide that provides long-lasting weed control in lawns, turfgrasses, and sod nurseries. Barricade 65 WG contains the active ingredient Prodiamine which is safe to use on some type of grasses without having any harmful effects. This weed preventer controls over 30 broadleaf and grassy weeds including goosegrass, crabgrass, carpetweed, and bluegrass by inhibiting its growth.

Syngenta Barricade 65WG is specially formulated in a wettable granule for easy and convenient tank mixing with other products. Ideal to use on established turfgrasses and lawns, conifer and hardwood seedling nurseries, field-grown, landscape, and container ornamentals, and non-crop areas like rights-of-way. Proven to leave no stain on fences, landscapes, or shoes when applied. May also be applied over the top of plants and in plant beds.

Barricade 65WDG is designed to PREVENT weeds and will not assist in controlling existing weeds.

Barricade 65WDG has recently transitioned to a 5 lb jug instead of a 5 lb bag.  Same great product, just new and improved packaging!

WHERE TO USE

Barricade 65WG is a preemergence herbicide that provides residual control of many grass and broadleaf weeds in:

  • Established turfgrasses (excluding golf course putting greens), lawns and sod nurseries
  • Container, field-grown, and landscape ornamentals
  • Conifer and hardwood seedling nurseries
  • Established perennials and wildflower plantings
  • Non-crop areas, including plantings on managed rights-of-way for transportation systems and utilities (including, roadways, roadsides, railways and equipment yards)
  • Facilities including substations, tank farms, pumping stations, parking and storage areas, and ungrazed fence rows
  • Christmas tree farms

HOW BARRICADE 65WG WORKS

Barricade 65WG controls susceptible weeds by preventing growth and development of newly germinated weed seeds. Weed control is most effective when Barricade 65WG is activated by at least 0.5 inches of rainfall or irrigation or shallow incorporation (1 to 2 inches) before weed seeds germinate and within 14 days following application.

MIXING AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES

MIXING

Barricade 65WG must be mixed thoroughly in the spray tank to ensure uniform application. Follow these steps:

  1. Fill the spray tank 1/4 full with clean water or fluid fertilizer only.
  2. Start agitation and check to ensure it is working properly.
  3. Add Barricade 65WG directly into the tank.
  4. Add the rest of the carrier to obtain the final spray volume.
  5. A spray colorant may be used with Barricade 65WG to mark areas as they are treated. This will improve application accuracy by minimizing swath skips and overlaps.
  6. Maintain vigorous agitation in the spray tank before and during the application. This will ensure a well-mixed spray suspension.
  7. Do not allow spray suspension to dry in the tank. Thoroughly clean the sprayer after use by flushing the system with water containing a detergent. Refer to the Pesticide Disposal section of this label for waste disposal.

TANK MIXING BARRICADE 65WG

Barricade 65WG may be tank mixed with certain other EPA-registered herbicides to provide a broader spectrum of weed control or to control emerged weeds. Refer to the specific directions for use for tank mix partners, and consult the label(s) of the individual tank mix partner(s) for use rate, application timing, weeds controlled, and specific precautions and/or restrictions. Tank mixes are permitted only in states where the tank mix partner(s) are registered for the application site and the turf and ornamental species listed. When using Barricade 65WG in a tank mixture with other pesticides, observe the most restrictive label limitations and precautions on the labels of the products used.

Before tank mixing with other pesticides not named on this label compatibility must be tested.

MIXING ORDER FOR TANK MIXTURES
Notes: (1) When mixing Barricade 65WG with other components (carrier and partner pesticide products), allow products to completely dissolve between steps. This is key when tank mixing with ester formulations. (2) Maintain agitation throughout the mixing and application of the mixture.

Add the products to the spray tank in the following order:

  1. Add products packaged in water-soluble bags first. Agitate the tank mixture. Allow the water-soluble bags to completely dissolve and the product to disperse before adding any other tank mix partner.
  2. Then add water-dispersible granules (WDG or WG formulations) and wettable powders (WP formulations). Add wettable powders to the tank as agitation continues. Allow the product to disperse completely before other products are added.
  3. Add spray adjuvants and spray markers. Read the adjuvant’s label first and use only those adjuvants approved for application to turf and ornamentals.
  4. Add flowable liquids (FL) or suspension concentrates (SC).
  5. Add emulsifiable concentrates (EC) last.

APPLICATION

Apply Barricade 65WG in a minimum of 20 gals./A (0.5 gal./1,000 sq. ft.) of the carrier (water and/or fluid fertilizer) using a calibrated, low-pressure sprayer with 50-mesh or coarser screens. A broadcast boom or handheld wand designed for herbicide or insecticide application will provide the best results. Select nozzle pressure and gallonage to provide complete coverage.

Sort Questions
Q
How much will a 5 lb jug cover and is it a concentrate?

want to cover aprox 2 acres

A

Barricade 65WG is specially formulated in a wettable granule for easy and convenient tank mixing with other products. The mix rate will depend on what type of turfgrass you have. There is a chart on pg 10 of he product label that presents the different mix rates. Please be sure to review the product label for more information and complete application instructions before use.

Q
How do I convert lbs to mixable coverage if mixed in a tank sprayer?
A

Barricade 65WG Herbicide should be mixed with water as directed on the label; the rate is given in oz per 1000 sq ft and not measured in pounds.

You will need to use 0.185-0.55 oz  (1.1 tsp-3.3 tsp) per 1,000 sq ft . To decide how much water you want to use, you should mark a 1,000 sq ft area, fill your sprayer with water ONLY, and start walking and spraying just as if you were doing the actual application of herbicide. When you are done walking and spraying the 1,000 sq ft area note how much water it took you to spray that area, and that is the amount you will want to mix 0.185-.055 oz (1.1 tsp-3.3 tsp) of product with for each 1,000 sq ft area that needs to be treated.

Q
Amount per 1 gallon

Mixing instructions

A

The first thing you need to know when using an herbicide such as Barricade 65WG Herbicide is that the exact amount of water you dilute it with is not important. It is only important to make sure you are using the correct amount of product per 1,000 sq ft of lawn. Use too much and you risk damaging your lawn, use too little and you will not get adequate results. You will need to use 0.185-0.55 oz per 1,000 sq ft . To decide how much water you want to use, you should mark a 1,000 sq ft area, fill your sprayer with water ONLY, and start walking and spraying just as if you were doing the actual application of herbicide. When you are done walking and spraying the 1,000 sq ft area note how much water it took you to spray that area, and that is the amount you will want to mix 0.185-.055 oz of product with for each 1,000 sq ft area that needs to be treated. You will need to make sure treated areas are irrigated with at least 1/2 inch of water (either by rainfall or by sprinkler) following the application. Q
What is the best time of year to put down prodiamine for poa annua in VA?

I have a lot of poa mixed into my fescue and want to get rid of it. I was thinking of putting it down in early March. is that the best time??? I will be overseeding this fall (September-October. depending on the rain) so don't want to do it then. and also with a 4-gallon electric backpack sprayer. 28,000 sq. ft. seems like a lot of area to cover.

A

Barricade 65WG Herbicide would not be applied in March for poa but rather the fall, and we have heard of many customers experiencing resistance with its active ingredient so we usually suggest going with other ingredients and formulations for poa control instead. Since poa annua and cool season grasses are so closely related, there are few products that will kill the poa annua without also harming the lawn. The only one we are currently aware of is called Prograss which can kill & prevent poa and can be applied at seeding, however it can only be applied to residential lawns by licensed applicators. You may want to see if a service local to you can provide this chemical treatment to your lawn.

Your only other option would be to spot-treat with a Roundup-type product and then reseed with the desirable grass type in those areas. You can use a pre-emergent like Dimension 2EW or Pendulum 2G in the fall and spring when you are not over seeding to help prevent the poa from emerging. Typically a split treatment in the fall will yield to longer and better prevention of the weeds. You would need to skip your fall overseeding and use a pre emergent during that time if you want to effectively stop poa from emerging as that is its prime cycle time frame. You could swap your pre emergent and seeding time frame for a year and do a pre emergent in the fall and overseeding in the spring to help still fill in your lawn while eliminating most of the weed. Keep in mind weed seeds can lay dormant in the soil for a few years so you may need to do this again the following year or in a few years depending on the density of the weed.
