Jacob from Greenville, Sc writes

Bifen XTS for termite prevention.

I'm not a big fan of trenching and was wondering if Bifen XTS (or its granular counterpart) can be broadcast on my lawn (how much and how many times a year) to prevent termites, as well as keep other bugs out. Total lawn size is just under 3600.

Answer:

Bifen XTS will not protect against termites when sprayed to the surface as termites do not contact the surface when foraging.  Treating the entire yard is also of little benefit for protection.  Termites are always out in the lawn below ground and protecting your home is key.  Bifen also only kills those insects that contact a treated surface, so great for general insects that contact it, but not for termite colonies that are below ground.

Trenching is the best prevention against subterranean termites as they are inches below the surface when foraging so you must dig a 6"x6" deep trench with something like Taurus SC to get the most effective protection as explained in our guide here.  Taurus will last for 10 years or more in the soil and has a transfer effect to the colony below ground when those that contact the treated soil go back down to it.
