    Q
What is Boracare's effect on existing fasteners in subfloors and joists?
Since Boracare is a Boric Salt Solution will it cause existing nails and or screws to corrode in my subfloor plywood, joists or wall studs?
    A
We have spoken with the manufacturer of Bora-Care, Nisus, and they have stated that there is no problem with aluminum or any other metals with a Bora-Care application.  There have been over 1.5 million houses treated over the past 15 years with no reported adverse effects and we have also done direct corrosion studies with Bora-Care and aluminum that show no corrosion.

Do you carry a product for Powder Post Beetles? If so, what is it?
    A
Bora-Care is a wood treatment product that is used to treat raw wood for the eradication of powder post beetles. You can spray it on all sides of the wood or paint it on the wood. It should be mixed with hot water in a seperate container and then applied in your sprayer. Please click on the product label for additional information on the product. • Asked by Richard from El Cerrito

    Q
Can Boracare be used on interior wood on a boat?
I have a fiberglass sailboat with wood trim pieces. I believe I have dry wood termites eating away at only a few pieces of the wood trim, but also in areas of the boat's hull; which is plywood sandwiched in between two layers of fiberglass. Is this product safe to use on these areas of sandwiched plywood? In other words will it have a negative effect on the small portion of fiberglass encompassing the plywood core?
    A
The interior wood pieces that are exposed will have to be stripped prior to the application if they are painted or stained. The manufacturer has told us that Boracare is not corrosive and it should not harm the interior of the fiberglass that touches the wood. For more information you may want to contact Nisus directly by calling 800-264-0870

    Q
What should I use for a log home, stained, water repellent finish and has termites and borers?
Have used Timbor with good success in other applications but it beads up and runs off the log walls. Injecting in holes works but is very slow process. Any words of wisdom or wait and strip the finish off and then use Boracare?
    A
The best process would indeed to be strip the finish and apply Boracare. This is the only product that will penetrate through the wood and eliminate the existing infestation and prevent future infestations.

    Q
    Drywood termite prevention
What do you recommend to protect a home against drywood termites. Does the trench around the structure work for drywoods? From what I understand they don't have to go through the ground.
    A
A trench treatment will not kill Drywood Termites because Drywood Termites nest in the wood unlike subterranean termites that nest in the ground. The best product to treat and prevent Drywood Termites would be BoraCare. You would simply mix 1 gallon of BoraCare with 1 gallon of water to make 2 gallons of finished solution (enough to treat 800 sq ft of attic or crawlspace) and spray the wood in the attic space and/or crawlspace. Boracare contains an inorganic borate salt, soluble in water, with insecticidal and fungicidal properties effective against wood destroying organisms. A patented carrier system allows BoraCare’s active ingredient to diffuse into wood. This system makes BoraCare more effective than products designed to treat only the wood’s surface. BoraCare also stays in the wood for the life of the wood, it never goes away so it will prevent future infestations in the wood that has been treated.

    Q
Does Boracare work on carpender bees?
    A
Boracare is not labeled for carpenter bee control as the boracare must be ingested to affect the insect. Carpenter bees only tear away at the wood, they dont eat it like termites do so they normally will not be affected. Carpenter bees are normally less attracted to treated wood but even after sealing the wood, you could use a residual spray like Cyonara 9.7 to spray across the wood to kill them just from landing on the treated surface.  Cyonara is also found in one of Carpenter Bee Kits here.

    Q
Can Boracare be used to pre-treat the foundation of new construction & at what concentration?
This would be done before any wood framing.
    A
Boracare would work great as a pre treatment for wood you are using. To pre treat the soil you are laying the foundation on, we recommend using Termidor SC. You want to dilute .8 fl oz Termidor per gallon water. Apply one gallon diluted solution per 10 sq feet.

    Q
How to handle wood that has been treated 48 hours ago with Boracare?
I have treated lumber for a patio cover with bora care. What precautions do I need to use handling the lumber after the 48 drying time?
    A
We really recommend to allow Boracare to dry for 72 hours after application. After 72 hours you can sand, saw, whatever you would like to do with the wood.

    Q
    Drywood termites in upholstered armchair.
Frame of the chair is visible; however the termite infestation is not. Just see the droppings in two areas. No apparent structural damage yet. What to do?
    A
For furniture your options are limited for treatment. If the wood is in its all natural raw state without any stains or finishes on it you can use a product like Boracare. Boracare will absorb all the way into the wood and eliminate any infestation that is there and last for the life of the wood. It does not stain the wood or leave behind any visible residue, but becomes one with the wood and any insect that ingests it dies. If the furniture has a finish on it, you would either have to drill holes throughout it and inject something like the Boracare or a foam, or the option most go with, hire a company to fumigate it.

    Q
We have swarming termites the last week and now I find them in the attic area and in the house.
What is the best way to treat the termites in the attic area before they form a colony?
    A
If you are dealing with drywood termite the best product for treatment in an attic whether for eliminating a current colony or just as prevention, would be the Boracare. Boracare can be applied with a paint brush or sprayer directly to any raw natural wood surface to protect the surface for the life of the wood. The Boracare will soak in and penetrate the wood to treat it as a whole and will not be removed unless consumed by an insect or the wood itself is removed from the home.

  • Asked by Mike from Indiana

    Q
If Boracare penetrates 4" why would I need to treat both sides of lumber 1"thick?
    A
For optimum penetration of the product into the wood and the quickest protection/elimination from insects, the Boracare needs to be applied to all sides, or at least as many sides as you can get to of the wood, no matter the depth. When it comes to protecting against wood destroying insects like termites you do not want to leave room for an inconsistent coverage that could allow more damage to be done.

    Q
    Boracare for powder post beetles
I have a piece of furniture invested with powder post beetles. I bought a termitocide foam and it worked some but I cannot reach all the holes. The outside of the furniture is stained/painted to the reclaimed look but the inside is not. It's a small cabinet maybe 3 ft tall and 3 feet wide. The wood isn't very thick. Can I apply boracare on the inside and it be effective for the entire piece. I don't want to part with it but am becoming extremely frustrated. Thanks AC
    A
Yes the Boracare will absorb all the way into the wood and eliminate any infestation that is there and last for the life of the wood.  Boracare is the only insecticide that can penetrate into the wood to kill the immature beetles before they chew their way out of the wood and damage the furniture.

  • Asked by Joel from Miami, Florida

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care to fog the inside of wall panels and attics if I program the fogger to produce heavy drops
    Treating flying termites
    A

Boracare cannot be used in a fogger as it is too thick of a product and will clog nozzles.  Foggers cannot penetrate into the wood to contact the termites so is not a recommended treatment method for termites.

Foaming is the preferred method when treating voids. To foam a product you need a poly foamer to apply the foam and our ProFoam Foaming Concentrate which is an expanding liquid you need to mix with the solution.  You would mix the Bora-Care with water in a one gallon poly foamer, then pour in the foaming agent, then mix it all together and pump up the poly foamer.  You are now ready to foam voids.

    Q
    Is Bora-Care available premixed?
    A
Bora-Care does not come ready to use.  We do carry the Jecta.  Jecta has the effectiveness of Bora-Care in a gel form for sealed or hard-to-reach wood.  Jecta is a ready-to-use injectable borate gel used by pest management professionals to protect sealed or inaccessible wood from termites and other wood destroying organisms. It is typically used to reach places where Bora-Care cannot be applied effectively.
