    Q
Is Boracare harmful? Do I have to leave the house while treatment? If so, how long do I have to stay away
    A
Depending on where you are applying Boracare, we would recommend using a respirator mask. We would also recommend leaving the area until the product has had time to dry. Generally, this could take 4-5 hours depending on the amount of product that was applied.

    Q
Will Boracare treat insects in pine wood?
I have a 2x4 piece of pine wood that is near my shallow well water pump that has a hole on the 4" side about a foot long and I find sawdust on my pump, what is the insect and how can I get rid of it.
    A
This could be numerous types of wood destroying insects. We would recommend to apply Boracare to the wood very directly with a paint brush.

    Q
How do I remove a crystal-like residue from Boracare treatment?
I applied Boracare to beams and stair tread with active powder post beetles. I applied two coats and it took about a week to dry. I now have a crystal residue on the unfinished wood. How can I clean the crystal residue so that I can apply the stains and oil finish?
    A

Boracare can create a crystal-like residue if heavily applied. You can wipe the residue away with water and soap.

  • Asked by Clay from Seattle, Wa
    07/21/2015
    Q
Does the second coat of Boracare have to be applied within a certain time?
Does a 2nd coat of BoraCare have to be applied (painted or sprayed) before the first coat dries? I'm concerned the 2nd coat might not penetrate adequately if the 1st coat is totally dry because I wasn't able to do the 2nd coat for several days or longer.
    A

Per Boracare's label you need to allow the first application to dry by waiting at least 20 minutes in between applications. For some applications, like when treating for Subterranean or Formosan termites, you may need to wait at least an hour between applications.

    Q
Does BoraCare overspill stay sticky on plastic floor tarps?
I'm going to paint/spray on a wood ceiling. Is the overspray/drippage onto my plastic floor tarps going to dry completely so it's not a problem walking on them and I can use the tarps again? Or is the overspray/drippage always going to be sticky since it's going to be sitting on the surface of the plastic instead of soaking into bare wood?
    A

The water that Boracare is mixed with will eventually evaporate, and it will dry. You could also wash the product off the tarp and reuse it.

    Q
Can BoraCare be used on previously infested termite wood?
We have had a termidor treatment for subterranean termites drilled into slab/around house perimeter for an active infestation as well as some foaming around the activity indoors. However, I would like to know if we can still apply the boracare to the previously affected wood that we are still leaving in place to prevent future infestation? Can we use this product to spray the previously affected areas to prevent future further damage to these already affected pieces?
    A

Yes, BoraCare may be used on wood that is currently and/or previously infested by termites. Please read the product label for complete use instructions.

  • Asked by Chad from Guerneville, Ca

    Q
Does Boracare work on different species of wood boring beetles?
Does Boracare work on all of the following wood boring beetle species, old world lyctus beetle southern lyctus beetle western lyctus beetle Pacific deathwatch beetle black Polycaon leadcable borer. Also, does the product need to be applied to the area of infestation only, or does one need to apply to surrounding areas to stop any spreading?
    A

Boracare is labeled for the follwoing types of beetles, Old House Borers, Longhorn Beetles and Ambrosia Beetles, Anobiid and Lyctid Powderpost Beetles.  It is best to apply to the entire piece of wood and surrounding raw wood to treat current infestations and protect from future infestations.

  • Asked by Jeff from Rogers, Ar
    07/24/2015
    Q
How do I apply Boracare for wood decaying fungus in a crawl space?
Do you recommend a 1:1 ratio for existing areas of wood decaying fungus? If so, a 1:1 ratio will take a lot of chemical to treat the whole crawl space under my house - is it ok to spot treat with 1:1 ratio only affected areas and then spray 5:1 ratio for prevention everywhere else? And would I need to wait for spot treatment to dry first before spraying 5:1 ratio or could I just spray around it? Final question, should I spray first and then come back later and put down my vapor barrier? (I saw comment about spray being sticky.)
    A

When using Boracare to treat for an active infestation of wood fungus it is applied at a 1:1 ratio for wood that is 4" thick or greater. Use a 3:1 dilution ratio for wood less than 4" in thickness.  You can spot treat the areas that have active fungus and then use the 5:1 for future prevention in the non effected areas.  You should be sure to address the moisture issue in the area before or during treatment of Boracare and apply a vapor barrier after the product has dried. Please see the product label for complete application instructions.

  • Asked by David from Thousand Oaks, Ca
    07/24/2015
    Q
Can Boracare be used in a thermal fogger or in a non thermal (ULV) type fogger?
Can any of these foggers be used to get the product onto inaccessible rafters? If so would the "fog" be effective? Also what would you suggest to treat douglas fir beams clad in oak veneer that are directly attached to the underside of a roof structure - i.e., no space between beam and interior ceiling.
    A

Boracare is too thick of a product to be used in any type of fogger.  It can be foamed into wall voids or sprayed or painted directly onto raw untreated wood only.  If you cannot directly access the wood that needs to be treated, foaming is the best solution, although it will only penetrate into wood that it is directly contacting.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used in a non thermal/ULV type fogger?
If so, would the product envelope inaccessible rafters in an attic and be affective in killing termites and prevent further infestation?
    A

Bora-Care cannot be applied in a thermal fogger or a ULV fogger. It can be applied to raw wood by being foamed in the wall void (foaming concentrate and foam applicator equipment needed), painted on the surface, or in a sprayer. You will mix the Bora-Care concentrate in hot water in a separate container and mixed first. Then you will apply in your sprayer. It is a very thick liquid and should not be mixed directly in the spraying equipment (this could cause equipment damage) and will clog most fogging equipment.

    Q
Do I need to sand 80 year old barnwood before applying Bora-Care?
The wood is untreated and raw.
    A

It is not necessary to sand wood that is raw when treating with Bora-Care. If the wood is painted, stained or sealed then you would want to sand first and then treat.

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care on wood pallets to prevent termites?
    A

Bora-Care can be applied to raw wood for the treatment or prevention of termites. It dries on clear and is made that way so you can stain, paint, or seal any piece of wood after using it. Please refer to the product label for complete mixing and application instructions.

    Q
Is Bora-Care the right product to clean barn wood before bringing it inside our home?
    A

Bora-Care would be great for applying to raw, cleaned wood for treatment against wood destroying organisms. We do carry a wood cleaner that you can apply first to remove any staining or discoloration called Mold-Clean.

    Q
What can I use for termites in an attic?
Is there a product that can be fogged or misted into an attic area that would be effective on 'coating' the wood rafters to kill termites that come in contact with the product. I ask this because the attic area is pretty much inaccessible. thx.
    A

We do not recommend to fog for termites in an attic. It will not penetrate the raw wood. In this case we recommend to treat using Boracare. Boracare will penetrate up to 4 inches into the wood and will last the lifetime of the wood. You can paint it, spray it, or foam it onto the raw wood.

    Q
Can I use a table to eat on after it has been treated with Boracare?
    A

Once the Boracare has dried you would normally put some sort of finish over it to protect the wood table from scuffs and marks, and this will help to seal in the Boracare further. After the Boracare has dried and fully absorbed into the wood, you can use the table normally with or without sealing after application.

    Q
How would you treat a 12" by 12" beam infested with powder post beetles?
    A

If the beam is raw wood, you can treat all 4 sides using Boracare at 1:1 ratio. Boracare will penetrate into the wood and will kill active Powder post beetles.

  • Asked by Tina from Vermont
    09/11/2015
    Q
How long will Bora Care take to work?
I have applied Bora Care to my shed, but am still seeing little piles of sawdust in places that I cleaned thoroughly.
    A

Bora-Care will take at least 30 days usually to diffuse through the entire piece of wood.  This of course depends on the thickness and moisture content of the wood.  It starts to work as soon as it begins to penetrate the wood it is applied to.  You may continue to see activity in wood that has a prior infestation as Boracare works by ingestion so will only kill the insects that are actively eating the wood and ingest the product.  If there are dormant beetles that are not active, but become active later, let's say next year, you could see new activity at that time, but they will die once they start eating since Bora-Care stays in the wood forever.  It is common to see activity at a later date since beetles are not all active at the same time.

  • Asked by Kim from Greensboro, Nc
    09/12/2015
    Q
Can I apply Bora-Care to the raw wood side of solid prefinished hardwood?
I have purchased prefinished solid hardwood flooring (hand scraped). Can I apply Bora-Care with a paint brush to the raw side (opposite of finished side) of the board as well as the raw tongue and groove sides? If so, what are the specific directions for application and how much should be applied? Will Bora-Care seep through the wood to the opposite pre-finished side of the wood board and damage the wood finish? The board is 3/4" in thickness by the way. Additionally, would it also be wise to apply Bora-Care to the wood sub-flooring before hardwood installation? Lots of questions. Thank you in advance for your advice.
    A

Bora-Care can be applied to any raw wood that is not painted, stained or sealed so yes it can be brushed on to the underside of the flooring.  It will only prevent termites from entering the wood that it is applied to and will penetrate up to 4 inches with one application.  It should be applied until the wood is just wet but not dripping.  Most of the time termites would have to eat through the sub-floor to get into the hardwood floors above, but there is no 100% guarantee that the termites will enter this way.  Treating the sub-floor would also ensure the termites do not get into the sub-floor as well.  If you want the hardwood floors better protected, you should treat all exposed wood also as long as they are unfinished.   Please see page 10 of the Bora-Care label.  Table A on page 10 will tell you how many lineal feet of board the bora-care will treat based on thickness. The tabel tells you how many lineal feet a DILUTED gallon will treat
