    Q
After treating plywood with Bora-Care can I apply a water based finish to the plywood?
    A

Bora-Care treatments take approx. 72 hours to dry. After that you can do what you wish to the wood including applying a finish.

    Q
Do you have recommended method to get rid of powder post beetle in a small 4"x4" wooden picture frame?
    A

Does the picture frame hold any type of sentimental value? If it doesn't then we suggest tossing it out if infested with powder post beetles. If it does, you can make sure to sand down to the raw wood and apply a product such as Bora-Care on all sides of the wood. This only comes in a gallon concentrate size and that is a lot of product for this small object. Please let us know if you need anything else.

    Q
Can I store Boracare for later use after it has been mixed?
Treatment with Bora-Care is planned, but in sistering joists that have had powderpost beetle damage in the past, I'm looking for a paintable treatment that doesn't need to be used up before it is unmixable. Bora-care recommends using all that is mixed, so I'm looking for an application that can be painted on, then sealed up for use as needed. Also, visited your site in Norcross and found the service nice, and very helpful. I'll definitely be a return customer. Thanks for your help.
    A

Thank you for your feedback.  We appreciate your business!  You may still be able to use Boracare as you have described, depending on the rate at which you mix it.  1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 mixture ratios must be used within 24 hours to prevent the product from degrading. A 1:5 mixture ratio can remain stable for up to 30 days. You should do your best to only mix enough solution for the job you are doing that day to prevent having to discard any solution.  We are not aware of another product that can be saved for later use once it has been mixed into solution.  After that point most products will start to not only break down and be less effective.

    Q
What equipment can be used to mist wall voids with Bora-Care?
The label for Bora-Care (and from Nisus themselves) recommends foaming or high pressure misting to treat wall voids. What equipment can be used to apply misting into a wall void? It (unfortunately) appears only the TrueTech 4000 and 7000 are capable of this? For reference, I'm treating an old house for Anobiidae beetles. The walls still have wood lath from the days of plaster. Foaming seems like it would miss much of the wood laths, while misting would be able to cover all the wood. Is my thinking correct?
    A

Boracare cannot be used in misting equipment but could be used in foaming equipment, and we carry a few types.  The Foamer Simpson or Chapin Poly Foamer would be able to be used along with a foaming concentrate like the ProFoam.  Once foamed it will only penetrate the wood that it touches, so be sure applications are made directly in areas that contact infested wood or wood you are wanting to protect.  If foaming wall voids would not contact the wood you need to treat you will need to drill into the wood and inject following the instructions on the product label.

    Q
Is it okay to use Bora-Care during a heat wave?
    A

Bora-Care can be applied in any temperature as long as it is not below freezing. However, the warmer the temperature the easier it will be to mix and apply the Bora-Care because of its thick consistency.

    Q
Will Bora Care stain shingles or aluminum?
    A

We have spoken with the manufacturer of Bora-Care, Nisus, and they have stated that there is no problem with aluminum or any other metals with a Bora-Care application.  There have been over 1.5 million houses treated over the past 15 years with no reported adverse effects and we have also done direct corrosion studies with Bora-Care and aluminum that show no corrosion.  Bora-Care is not labeled to be applied to shingles.

  • Asked by Kamp from Grand Rapids, Mi

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used on partially treated wood?
I have 1/2" thick reclaimed wood. One side of the wood has a clear coat polyurethane on it. the other side is the raw wood. I noticed a powderpost beetle working its way out of the wood on the side I sealed. Now I want to treat the wood with Bora-Care. Can I just apply it to the side that is unfinished and it will work just fine seeing's how it is raw wood? Or, do I have to strip the polyurethane first and treat bora-care on both sides of the board.
    A

Bora-Care should only be applied to raw wood. It will not penetrate through any wood that has been pre-treated. Polyurethane is equivalent to applying paint, so the best process would indeed to be strip the finish and apply Boracare as this is the only product that will penetrate through the wood and eliminate the existing infestation and prevent future infestations.

    Q
Will pressure washing the wood prior to the application of Bora-Care or Timbor help or hurt with the penetration?
My old logs need cleaning before treatment.
    A

The raw, natural wood can be treated and dried completely prior to the application of Bora-Care or Timbor without disrupting the absorption.

    Q
After I apply Bora-Care and Bora-Care with Mold-Care to my crawlspace and let it dry, can I spray other insecticides in the crawlspace as well?
Will any types of insecticides, such as the ones pest control companies routinely spray, reduce the effectiveness of the Bora-Care?
    A

Once the BoraCare and BoraCare with Mold Care have had time to dry, spraying a general purpose insecticde over the area would not affect the BoraCare application.

  • Asked by Steve from Aberdeen, Md

    Q
Can insulation be placed against fresh sprayed Bora-care?
I will be pulling back the insulation and spraying bora care in my crawl space against the rim joist and floor joists and plywood floor. I will do this 2 feet in from the outside wall of the house. Can I put the insulation back in between the floor joists immediately after spraying Bora-Care?
    A

The insulation should be removed so that the Bora-Care can be applied directly to the wood. It is safe to place back once surfaces treated are completely dry. You can foam Bora-Care into the wall voids. The insulation may soak up a bit of the applications but here is how the pros handle it: You will need to use a stud finder to locate each stud. You should then drill a hole at the top of the wall on either side of each stud and you should drill a second set of holes at the bottom of the wall on either side of each stud. You will apply the foam using the top holes and you will know the foam has successfully coated the wood when it comes out of the bottom holes on either side of the studs.

    Q
Can I apply Bora-Care to select timbers after I've sprayed them with Timbor Professional and let it dry?
    A

Anytime you are treating exterior wood you should always use Bora-Care.  It will last longer in the wood than Timbor.  Also, Timbor can leave a powdery residue behind.  Bora-Care dries clear and will look better after finishing the wood with the stain.

    Q
Is Bora-Care going to be helpful in eradicating carpenter ants?
Have home infestation of carpenter ants.
    A

Bora-Care should only be used to prevent carpenter ants. We do not recommend using it to treat a current infestation. Once the ant gallery has already been establsihed Boracare will not be very effective.  You can treat the current infestation by using our Carpenter Ant Kit indoors and Taurus SC (against the exterior of the structure) and Advance Carpenter Ant Bait around trailing sites, trees, structure, wood piles, etc. Please take a few moments to review our article on How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants for a successful eradication program.

    Q
Why is there residue after applying Boracare?
Applied 3 coats of poly but we have white smudges all over floor which finisher believes is boracare reacting to poly. Have to strip wood and start all over. How do we avoid this happening again? Are we supposed to wash floor after boracare and before finishing?
    A

If you are seeing white residue after applying Boracare, then there are a few possible causes. What usually happens is that either the Boracare was not mixed properly before it was applied, or too much product was applied to wood. Another possibility is that the Boracare did not have enough time to dry completely before the poly coating was applied. Typically Boracare dries in 24-48 hours. You can remove excess Boracare using soap and water, but we would try to avoid doing this unless there is clearly too much product applied. Another condition that could cause strange drying is if you are trying to apply Boracare to wood that has already been treating with paint, stain, sealant, oil, or another finish.

    Q
What is the best product and equipment to use for drywood termites in multiple large attics?
    A

Boracare would be the best product to treat any accessible raw untreated wood for drywood termites. You can apply Boracare by rolling, painting, pressurized hand pump sprayer, or foamer. Please refer to our How to Treat for Drywood Termites Guide for step by step instructions on how to do a full treatment (Identify, Inspect, Treat & Prevent).

  • Asked by Mike from Arizona

    Q
    Will Bora-Care also kill swarmers?
I have a lot of swarmers coming out of my walls. If I foam this into the walls, will it kill the existing swarmers or only the other termites that eat the wood? If not, how do I kill the existing swarmers since they don't eat wood?
    A

565 PLUS XLO will kill termites or any other insects on contact. However, keep in mind that most swarming termites will die on their own in about a day. You should determine what kinds of termites are in the area (either Drywood or Subterranean) so that you can address the larger issue at hand, which is that there is a mature termite colony in the area. Bora-Care should only be applied to raw, natural wood for treating wood destroying insects. If you are treating for swarmers, we recommend spot treating voids with Fuse Foam and using Taurus SC in a trenched and drilled holes for termites. Please take a few moments to review our treatment article on How to Get Rid of Termites for a successful treatment program.
