    Q
Is there a bug bomb I can use in an empty house for powder post beetles?
    A

Powder post beetles live inside wood and can remain dormant inside wood for up to 30 years.  Foggers will be unable to penetrate the wood to contact the beetles, and it certainly won’t give any sort of long term residual to product your wood when they beetles come out of their dormant stage. Bora-Care is the best product for powder post beetles.  It is sprayed/painted on raw untreated wood.  It will soak through to the center of the wood and protect the wood for the lifetime of the wood.

    Q
I am building a pine cabin with 12"-14" air dried logs using the scribe method for construction. Can I apply Bora-Care before scribing the logs or should I treat each individually after scribed?
    A

Since Bora-Care is designed to soak through to the center of the wood to protect the wood for it’s lifetime from wood boring pests, it is important to apply the product to all surfaces on the wood.  We would recommend treating the logs prior to scribing to ensure you’re able to treat the entire surface of each log.

    Q
How long after applying Boracare can sheet rock be hung?
    A

You will need to wait until the Bora-Care has dried before hanging sheet rock.  Once the wood the Bora-Care was applied to is no longer tacky to the touch, it is dry and sheet rock can be put up.

    Q
Can I use clothes dye with Bora-care?
    A

For tracking purposes (to make it easier to see where Bora-Care solution has been applied) an appropriate marker dye or pigment may be added.  We suggest using Turf Mark Blue as this is an approved pigment dye used for Bora-Care.

    Q
What type of sprayer do I need to apply Boracare?
    A

Any hand pump sprayer can be used to apply Boracare.  It is recommended to dilute the Boracare in a bucket with hot water and then add the dilution to the sprayer. If you dilute Boracare directly in the sprayer you will almost always wind up with a clogged sprayer.

  • Asked by Bea from Queensland, Australia
    10/02/2018
    Q
Can Boracare be applied to timber? Do I water it down to spray it?
    A

The mixture will be the same no matter what kind of wood you are treating. For an active infestation of any wood destroying insect you will mix Bora-Care  at the rate of 1:1. If there is no current activity of insects, you will use the preventative rate of 5:1.   You will need to mix the Boracare with hot water in a separate container first and mix well prior to putting it in a sprayer. Apply to all sides of the timbers.

    Q
I see exit holes 1/16" on my non lad 6x6x8 ft. beam. There is 1 painted surface. I suspect wood boring beetles. Can I use Boracare?
I have 3 surfaces that I can treat.  Possible wood beetles?  I was thinking of drilling a series of ¼ dia c 2' deep holes at random and filling with Bora-Care solution or a product that you can recommend and then plug holes at a later date.  Thanking you in advance.
    A

Bora-Care would be the best product to use, applied twice to the three surfaces you can get to.  It will penetrate up to 4 inches with 1 application, and up to 8 with 2.  If you choose to drill you should drill whatever size hole you need based on what you have available to inject the Bora-care with.  Typically if you have an injection piece of equipment, 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch holes are used.  Please see this technical bulletin from the manufacturers of Bora-Care that explains about drilling and injecting into wood.  See page 5 and it will give specifics about the drill pattern, etc.

    Q
Can Bora-Care penetrate through old teak that has been oiled years prior?
I have an boat with teak interior, solid teak planks and teak veneer. I recently found a drywood termite nest in the teak Veneer shelving with a kickout hole in the plywood that lined the bottom of the shelves. Shelves and the nest have been removed. As a precaution I would like to treat the wood in the rest of the boat. I see this product does not work on wood that has been stained or painted. What about oiled or unpainted marine plywood? The teak was coated with teak oil over 8 years ago. Will it work in these?
    A

Boracare really is designed to only be applied to raw wood that has no finish or treatment on it of any kind. The teak oil may prevent the Borcare from fully  penetrating into the wood.  If you can sand some of it off (depending on how deep the oil penetrated into the door), you may be able to apply the Boracare with sucess.  However, we cannot guarantee that it will soak in the way its intended to since the oil has been applied.

    Q
Can I apply Boracare to wood that has already been treated with Timbor?
    A

Yes, you can treat the same wood with Boracare.   The previous treatment with Timbor will have no affect on the absorption. Both products are borate-based and become one with the wood after application.

  • Asked by Robert from Taneytown
    10/27/2018
    Q
After soaking barn beams with Bora-Care and allowed to dry, do you rinse off the wood prior to applying sealant?
    A

Typically Boracare dries in 24-48 hours and does not need to be rinsed before sealing. If there is any white residue left, you can remove excess Boracare using soap and water, but we would try to avoid doing this unless there is clearly too much product applied.  You only need to apply to wood until wet, but not dripping.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be applied to wood in its rough form with bark still on it?
I am a woodturner with an upcoming trip to get quite a lot of wood. I need it all but can't turn and process it all quickly. Wondering if your product will protect this wood while in storage.
    A

No, Bora-Care cannot be used on wood with bark still on it. The bark needs to be stripped from the wood because it will not allow Bora-Care to be absorbed into the wood.

    Q
Can we apply Bora Care prior to the spray insulation without it affect the adherence or longevity of the foam insulation?
    A

Yes, Bora-Care can be applied to any raw wood surface prior to finishing or the use of spray insulation.  Apply the Bora-Care per label instructions, allow the Bora-Care ample time to dry, and then you are free to finish the wood or apply spray insulation over top of the wood.
