    Q
My garden trellis is made of unfinished red cedar and supports a 30 plus year old rose. Working around the rose, I applied Bora Care by brush and roller to most of the wood, which is infested with termites, but am unable to paint or seal the because the rose partially covers the wood. Should I reapply Bora Care periodically, and if so, how often?
    A

If you are treating wood with Bora-Care that is exposed to rainfall and that cannot be sealed, then yes, you likely will want to reapply the Bora-Care every 3-5 years as needed.

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care on a painted porch post & railing that has termite dropping below if I power wash it first?
The porch post already has cracks in it and some of the wood next to it sounds hallow. Will Bora Care still penetrate into the cracks even if the wood is painted, but is slightly cracking & exposed?
    A

No, for Bora-Care to work properly, it would need to be applied to raw wood only with no paint, stain or finish on it. Please be sure to review the product label for more information and complete application instructions.

Instead of Bora Care, if you are unable to strip the paint, you may want to consider using a product like Jecta into inject into the wood. You may view the product label here.

    Q
I am using Bora Care to treat the outside of a full wine barrel planter along with sealing the application with a verathane type sealant. For additional protection, can I use BoraCare on the inside of the barrel without a sealant, or is the sealant going to be necessary because the product is water soluble?
    A

Yes, it is recommended to seal all wood surfaces after applying Bora-Care to ensure the application is locked into the wood.

    Q
How do I treat whitewashed wood with Bora-Care?
Our barn has powederpost beetles and much of the wood is whitewashed. How do I apply bora-care to whitewashed wood? Should the whitewash be power-washed off, wood allowed to dry thoroughly, then Bora-Care applied? Would the power washing simply drive the eggs/larvae deeper into the wood?
    A

Bora-Care has to be applied to raw, untreated, and unpainted wood. If you have whitewashed wood you will need to remove the whitewash so that the Bora-Care can soak into the wood. You would need to allow it to fully dry and then apply. You can whitewash again once the Bora-Care has fully dried as well. If the power-washing drove the eggs deeper the Bora-Care could still get to it as it soaks into the wood but you would need to apply to all sides of the wood.

Please review the BoraCare product label and Dimensional Lumber Technical Bulletin for more information.

    Q
My jug of Bora-Care was very cloudy, not clear like the Bora-Care I have used in the past.
The jug was five years old, was never opened and was stored in a cool, dark area. I mixed the Bora-Care with 3/4 gallon of clean water and triple rinsed the Bora-Care container with 1/4 gallon of clean water. The Bora-Care container rinsed completely clean. I mixed the Bora-Care and 1 gallon of clean water for more than 5 minutes with a paint mixer attached to an electric drill but the solution still had a cloudy appearance. I applied the solution using a two gallon sprayer and did not have any issues. The Bora-Care solution did absorb and dry on my wood deck and there isn't any residue, crystals or dust like material on the surface of the wood. Will the cloudiness of the Bora-Care solution affect how well it penetrates into and protects the wood? Should I retreat my deck with a fresh gallon of Bora-Care?
    A

General most products will have a shelf life of 3-5 years if stored properly in a temperature stable environment (between 45 and 75 degrees) and out of direct sunlight.  After that time if the product has separated or looks differently it is always recommended to replace and not use.  We would recommend reaching out to Nisus directly to confirm if Bora-Care would still be effective as they would know their product stablity better, They can be reached at 800-264-0870

    Q
Do I need to treat the entire plywood subfloor with Bora-Care or just the perimeter only?
Newly built Peer & Beam home, non-conditioned crawl space, plywood flooring with closed cell foam under floor. Do I treat entire plywood subfloor or perimeter only?
    A

If you are using Bora-Care as a preventive you will treat any raw untreated wood that you believe may be vulnerable to termite damage. If you are treating an active infestation you will need to apply it to all raw untreated wood where you have termite activity. Typically a full sub floor treatment would not be necessary for a house on a crawl space but we also recommend having some other termite prevention in place like termite bait stations or a termite trench treatment

    Q
How long does it take an application of BoraCare to dry if applied with a sprayer to barn boards?
    A

The dry time for Boracare is entirely dependent on how heavy you sprayed, the mix rate you used, and how quickly the raw wood you treated can absorb the product. This can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

    Q
Can we apply BoraCare to AAC block walls? These are more porous than standard concrete blocks.
In the tech bulletin it says BoraCare can be applied to concrete blocks. The AAC (aerated autoclaved concrete) blocks we are using are more porous than the usual concrete blocks. I'm assuming that means the BoraCare will penetrate better into these blocks. Am I correct?
    A

Yes, Bora-Care can be applied to concrete blocks, block or brick on the interior of crawl spaces and basement foundations as well as sill plates, piers, girders, subfloors, floor joists and any wood exposed to vertical access above ground. This is done typically to prevent shelter tubing by subterranean termites.

For specifics on the absorbption into AAC (aerated autoclaved concrete), we would recommend contacting the manufacturer directly Nisus at 800-264-0870 for technical information.

    Q
Bora Care or Bora Care with mold treatment
Which one do i use? After my house being devastated by Hurricane Ida I'm in the process of gutting it. I have some mold and termite damage on the 2x4's behind the sheet rock in the walls and some mold and termite damage on some of the 2x6's on the attic beams. Can I just spray what you recommend on the wood without cleaning? Thanks
    A

If you have termite activity and mold, you will need to make an application of Bora-Care first and once it's dry, then make an application of Bora-Care with Mold-Care. If you no longer have termite activity but would like to make a preventative treatment, we would recommend the same treatment if it is a preventative treatment where subterranean termites are involved. If you are only concerned with a preventative treatment for drywood termites then you can treat with Bora-Care with Mold-Care.

    Q
Can I apply Bora-Care to wood with mildew stains?
I won't have time this fall to do the full clean and protective stain, but I can fit in a round of Bora-Care. The wood siding however shows mildew, but does not repel any liquid. Would it be okay to use Bora-Care now, then wash and stain the siding next year? So it is at least protected from bugs?
    A
Bora-Care does not treat mold. You will want to remove stains first, then treat with Bora-Care with MoldCare application once dried then stain and seal exterior wood as directed for the best application for treating/preventing wood destroying insects and mold/mildew. We do offer Mold Clean that can be applied to remove stains with minimalizing or eliminating scrubbing and it penetrates deep into wood pores for thorough stain removal, which bleach cannot do.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used to treat termites found on wood shelves used to grow for Tillandsia (air plants)?
Does this need to be sealed with a water sealant product due to watering the Tillandsia daily? Will the leashed chemical damage the plants?
    A

If wood treated with Bora-Care will be exposed to moisture such as watering or rainfall, then yes, you want to apply a water sealant after the Bora-Care application is dry.

Boracare would not bother plants if they are in containers on top of the treated wood; however, any Boracare that contact desirable plants directly may damage those plants.

    Q
If my crawl space is be sprayed with BoraCare, do I need to vacate the house for the night?
    A

No, vacating the home is not required when using Bora-Care in the home as this is considered a “green” product. Once the application has completely dried which usually takes about an hour or so depending on outside temperatures, humidity, etc, it would be fine to be in the home and sleep.

    Q
What happens if Bora-Care is applied directly and not diluted with water?
    A

Boracare should not be applied undiluted at any time and requires to be diluted with water in order to work properly and have the ability to absorb throughout the wood being treated. Boracare and the glycols it contains are designed to replace the natural moisture content of the wood so it bonds and last long term in the piece of timber you are trying to protect.

    Q
Can Boracare be sprayed in a crawl space of a 104 year old home for powder post beetles during the rainy months in the Pacific Northwest or is it better to wait for warmer and drier weather?
I have a pest company treating the crawlspace for powder post they will be using a sprayer truck with about 15 gallons of water. My concern is with the rainy and cold weather the relative humidity will be too high to effectively dry the wood some members are over 100 years old and have some dry rot or age. Is it best to postpone this treatment when it is warmer and drier? Do not want a lot of moisture in the crawl for too long. It's vented crawl about 1500 sq ft?
    A

If the crawlspace is well vented it should be able to dry out after a Boracare application. Boracare is designed to absorb into and bond with the wood itself, using the glycols of the Boracare to penetrate all the way into the wood and replacing its natural moisture content with the borate particles. You could run a box fan or small dehumidifier under there for a week if you wanted to try to help reduce moisture further, but you shouldn't have to worry about the higher humidity with the rain impacting it greatly. If you wanted to be absolutely certain you could wait until warmer/dryer weather, but it wouldn't be necessary.

    Q
If overspray occurs while applying Bora-Care, is it necessary to clean those surfaces in which people may come into contact with?
    A
Bora-Care can be applied by spraying, painting or brushing onto surfaces. In areas where overspray is a concern, it is recommended to cover any unwanted areas or apply the treatment by brushing or painting directly onto the surface. If overspray should occur, you will need to clean and wipe those surfaces to remove any residual.

Should I plane my boards to a final thickness before treatment with Bora-Care?
I am getting ready to use some 1" thick oak that has powder post beetles, I need to plane it down to a 3/4" thickness. Should I plane it down and finish sand it before I treat it or can I treat it a few days before I mill it down.
    A

It would be recommended to complete any sanding/planing before applying Boracare.

    Q
What is the recommended method for treating wood beneath drywall with BoraCare?
The answer to Jerry on 9/17/2010 was to drill at a downward angle into the studs every 6 inches and inject Bora-Care into the drilled holes. The answer to Adam from Kansas on 03/02/2013 was to drill holes at the top of the wall on each side of each stud and drill a second set of holes at the bottom of the wall on each side of each stud and then apply Bora-Care foam using the top holes until the foam comes out of the bottom holes. Has the recommendation changed over time?
    A

Both of the treatments mentioned in previous Q&A's for Boracare are correct as they are for 2 different application methods. If you are drilling directly into the stud you would follow the instructions of drilling every 6 inches and inject.  If you want to foam into a wall void instead then you would follow the drill at the top and bottom on each side of the stud instructions.
