    Q
Is there some that can be sprayed inside framed walls that would create a long-term barrier?
Building a new home. Wondering if there is something out there that can be sprayed into the enclosed (but not yet insulated or drywalled) home to create a long-term bug barrier. DIY or professional. Thanks for any input.
    A
BoraCare is a wood preservative that can be sprayed directly on the wood studs to kill wood destryoying insects and last indefinately, it never goes away. As far as other general insect pests, a broad spectrum insecticide dust such as Cimexa Dust can be applied inside of the wall void to kill a wide variety of insects. Cimexa Dust will normally last at least 10 years when left undisturbed and can be applied prior to installing sheetrock or drywall or through the openeing of faceplates of electrical outlets and light switches once drywall is installed. Both of these products are designed for long term control. Please be sure to read the product label for complete use instructions.

    Q
Could there be visible Powderpost Beetle powder after treating with BoraCare and staining?
After treating raw poplar wood board and batt siding on my house twice with 1 to 1 ratio BoraCare then staining with an oil base stain, I have active Powderpost Beetle exit holes in the wood. Is it possible for beetles to exit and the wood still be treated for future infestations?
    A
Yes, the wood that you have treated with BoraCare is still treated for future infestations. The larvae that were present in the holes when you treated, still have to hatch and consume the wood for it to eradicate the population. The exit holes and powder you are experiencing are those new hatchlings of Powderpost Beetles.  According to the BoraCare label when treating for Powderpost Beetles, watiing 6 weeks is recommended before staining or painting the wood to give any unhatched larvae time to exit.  You can contact Nisus at 1-800-264-0870 directly for any helpful tips and suggestions on any reapplications or preventative techniques that might be necessary. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Q
Reclaimed Wood with Post Hole Beetle Infestation
I have roughly 200 Sq ft of reclaimed barn wood that I'm trying to use to build some tables, night stands, etc with. It's all 1 inch thick and has signs of a current infestation of post hole beetles. (Fresh powder around new holes). I think boracare would be my best bet because it will penetrate throughout from one side. Should 1 gallon cover this and leave me a good bit left over? Can I just treat from one side? Will it leave any residue or color behind that will not allow me to use the wood for projects? I really want to salvage this wood because it's so hard to find good reclaimed wood. Please let me know if I have any other options as well.
    A
Bora-Care is the best wood treatment product available.  Bora-Care will penetrate through the wood and kill the larvae eating the wood no matter where they are in the wood and will penetrate up to 4 inches with one application so applying to only one side of 1 inch thick wood will be fine.  One gallon should be enough but please refer to the Dimensional Lumber Bulletin.  Bora-Care will dry clear and not leave any visable residue when used as directed.

    Q
    Will Boracare cause mold?
Should I get boracare with boracare mold control?
    A
Boracare will not cause mold and the Boracare with Mold Care is only needed if you are trying to treat for mold that is currently there or to help prevent it in an area like a crawl space that has a moisture problem.

    Q
Can you make Boracare into a foam?
Is it possible to make a foam version of Boracare instead of cutting the drywall of a house?
    A
Yes, Boracare can be used as a foam. You should only be concerned about getting the foam near the wood and studs.  Typically when a company foams walls, they drill holes at the top of the ceiling on either side of the studs and foam down the stud from the ceiling.  This way you have gravity working in your favor and you are getting the foam against the wood which is all that matters. You will need a foaming agent and a poly foamer. You will mix 2 gallons of hot water with 1 gallon of Boracare.

    Q
Can BORACARE be used full strength to penetrate better or is dilution required?
    A

Boracare does need to be diluted depending on what you are intending to use the product for. For an active infestation of a wood destroying insect, you will use 1 gallon of hot water with 1 gallon of Boracare. The percentage of active ingredient is 23% in that dilution.

2:1 parts water to Boracare – 16% - foaming or misting application for termites or carpenter ants; hardwood floors for some wood-infesting beetles

3:1 parts water to Boracare – 13% - remedial control of Fungi and Algae on wood less than 4 inches thick

5:1 parts water to Boracare – 9% - most preventative or pre-construction treatments.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Q
I need a wood preserver for an untreated new fence that is adjacent to a middle school.
    A
We would recommend using Boracare. Apply only to bare wood or to wood surfaces where an intact water repellent or finish is not present. For preventative measures, you will use 5 gallons of very hot water with 1 gallon of Boracare. You can either paint this on or spray it on. Once the product dries, you can do whatever you wanted to do with the fence. We would recommend not spraying when anyone is around. It normally dries within 2-3 hours. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

  • Asked by Tom from Niceville, Fl
    08/11/2014
    Q
How much should i use when foaming Boracare into a wall void?
How high should I drill the hole between the studs for foaming wall voids? How much foam should I inject into insulated wall voids? How much foam should I inject into uninsulated wall voids? What is the best way to gauge the amount of foam I inject?
    A
Bora-Care is the best product to use for drywood termites in wall voids.  If you are foaming for termites, then you should not be concerned about foaming an entire wall void.
You will need to use a stud finder to locate each stud. You should then drill a hole at the top of the wall on either side of each stud and you should drill a second set of holes at the bottom of the wall on either side of each stud. You will apply the foam using the top holes and you will know the foam has successfully coated the wood when it comes out of the bottom holes on either side of the studs. If the foam doesn't make it all the way down due to insulation absorbing it, then drilling multiple holes down the sides of each stud can be done as well. You can also drill holes into the studs in search of the galleries they have eaten away and shoot the foam into these spots for direct treatment.
If you do not have drywood termites and instead have subterranean termites, you should instead look at our article How to Perform a Termite Treatment for proper application and products to be used.

    Q
    Boracare Wall Void Foaming
I'm preparing to foam the wall voids of my home with boracare and profoam to prevent future subterranean termites infestations. I'll use a 2:1 ratio and a foamer comparable to your poly foamer. 1. How high should I drill the hole between each stud? 2. Should I drill a single hole in the center between the studs or should I drill multiple holes between each stud? 3. How much foam should I dispense between each stud and how do I gauge the proper amount of foam? 4. Are there any differences in application techniques between walls insulated with fiberglass batting and non-insulated walls?
    A
Drill holes every 18-24 inches adjacent to the side of each stud and inject at least 1/3 fluid ounce of Bora-Care solution per hole. You will be drilling multiple holes on the side of each stud. Drill at least one hole per stud bay near the floor to treat the base plate in each void. There are no differences between the applications in the different walls. The foam will expand inside and wall and kill the termites. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Q
What do I use in crawl space to clean wood of fungus?
    A
Mold Clean will not prevent the fungus, but will remove staining and discoloration. We would recommend using Boracare with Moldcare as it will treat and prevent mold and wood boring insects. It should be applied prior to the application.

    Q
Old House Wood Bore Finished Logs
I have a log home that was sand blasted and refinished about 4 years ago. I now see what I believe to be Old House Wood bore beetles coming out. I see reference to injection the product
    A
If the inside of the logs are not finished you can certainly apply a few coats of the Boracare from the inside but it is not guaranteed it will penetrate all the way through the wood with the finish on the other side. If you were injecting from the outside, another product made by Nisus like the Boracare woudl be better. The product is Jecta and is specifically designed to drill holes and treat finished wood that cant be stripped or sanded down for an application of Boracare.

  • Asked by John from Fort Bragg, Ca
    07/10/2014
    Q
can I inject undiluted Boracare into a powderpost beetle hole?
I don't want to use enough boracare to mix up a batch, just a small syringe full. Or does it need to mix with water even if using a syringe or paitnbrush?
    A
Boracare needs to be mixed and diluted with water no matter how much or little you are using. So if you only need a few ounces, mix 1 or 2 ounces of Boracare with 1 or 2 ounces of hot water. As long as you keep the dilution at the correct rate you can mix up as little or as much as needed.
