    Q
    New construction
We are getting ready to build. No insect situation What product should I use?
    A

If you are trying to do a pre-construction treatment on the soil before the slab, you can use Taurus SC. If you're wanting to treat the wood frame before the sheetrock goes up, you can use Bora-Care on all the wood studs - the product needs to be applied to raw wood.

    Q
Is the sawdust from Bora-Care treated wood safe to use as garden mulch?
The wood was treated a few weeks ago and is fully dry. Alternately, is the sawdust safe to use in horse bedding? (occasionally horses might nibble on or eat the sawdust)
    A

We apologize but that is not a question that has ever come up, and not something we feel would be safe if the horses are going to be inhaling or ingesting the sawdust materials. We would suggest not using any sawdust from a Boracare application in those areas, but you can contact the manufacturer Nisus directly to go over any concerns you may have in detail. You can reach them at 800-264-0870.

    Q
How long do I need to wait to sand and oil base polyurethane a 2.5
    A

It is recommended to wait until the application of Bora-Care has completely dried throughout the treated wood before sanding or applying any type of paint, stain or sealant. Depending on the humidity or moisture in the wood, this can take 24-48 hours to dry. For best results, applying a stain, paint or sealant should be done within 30 days of the Bora-Care application.

    Q
How to kill drywoods in trees near home with Bora-Care?
How to kill drywood nests in trees near my home that send mating couples into my house each year?
    A

Bora-Care  is only for use on cut timber not currently still growing.

Termites do not attack live, healthy trees. If the tree has been damaged by termites it would be advisable to remove the tree.  They are natures recyclers so they go after dead/decaying wood more with high moisture content as well.   Most people are primarily concerned with protecting the big investment, their home.  Please take a moment to read over our article on "How to do a Termite Treatment" for complete details.  In most cases, termites out in the yard are completely normal and can be left alone.  However if in non fruit bearing trees and you can locate and directly spot treat the nest in the tree you can use something like Termidor SC after drilling into the gallery to be sure you are making contact where they are actively are.

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care on a concrete slab to spray before I put down a wood floor?
    A

Boracare can be applied to concrete, however, it would be best to treat the wood itself before it is stained or finished. Treating the slab only would not offer the same protection.

    Q
What do I use to treat a 3" thick piece of raw water oak slab, for bugs.
We have these needle sized, black bugs in the wood. Can I sand and finish after treating the 3" slab?
    A

You can definitely use a product like Bora-Care to treat for the life of the 3" thick piece of raw wood. You may also apply a finishing or paint over the wood once it dries. Usually dry time is about 72 hours.

    Q
    3 to 1 mix ratio with Bora-Care
My technician used 3 to 1 mix to apply in the attic. Is this the right mixture ratio to prevent termites forever? Should I reapply with 2 to 1 mixture for termites?
    A

Preventative use rate  for Boracare is 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, or 5:1. There is no need to reapply the product as it will last for the life of the wood.  Refer to the label for complete instructions..

Is Bora-Care labeled for Carpenter Bees?

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used AFTER wood was treated with Timbor Professional for active termite infestation?
After removing the sheetrock, my exterminator used "Timbor" on the infested studs instead of Bora Care. My plan is to apply BoraCare over the preveiously treated areas with Timbor, Will I need to prep or scrape the wood before applying BoraCare.
    A

Yes, you can apply Bora-Care to wood that has previously been treated with Timbor. The previous application of Timbor will have no affect on the absorption of BoraCare into the wood. Since both products are borate-based and become one with the wood after application, there should not be any issues. You don't need to do anything to the wood unless you had applied any type of paint, sealant or stain after you applied the Timbor. If you had applied a sealant/paint/stain then you would need to strip the wood back down to it's raw state.

    Q
What's the best application method for treating a stained wood mantle with BoraCare?
    A

To use Bora-Care on stained wood, you would need to either strip and sand the mantle to its raw wood state or drill holes into the piece and use the gel formulation of BoraCare called Jecta. If sanding the wood to its raw state, BoraCare would be applied at the 1:1 ratio and after it has dried you can re-stain/finidh the mantle. Jecta is a ready-to-use injectable borate gel used by pest management professionals to protect sealed or inaccessible wood from termites and other wood-destroying organisms.

    Q
Will Bora-Care affect the stain and how it is absorbed into the lumber? Will it be splotchy or be lighter than non treated wood of the same type?
    A

Wood treated with BoraCare is able to be painted, stained or sealed within 30-45 days after the application. The color of the wood after staining should not be affected as BoraCare will absorb clear into the wood. Please review the product label for more information.

    Q
Once the Bora-Care has dried, is it safe to cut the treated lumber without a mask? Is the sawdust toxic?
    A

Sawdust from Boracare treated wood would be no more toxic that untreated wood, though you should avoid breathing in either.  You should cut the wood to the final size before treating with Boracare. You do not want to waste the product on wood that will not be used and as Boracare can take up to 30 days to completely penetrate.

    Q
If you did get Bora-Care on your skin, is soap and water 100% protective against harm to a person?
    A

Bora-Care is safe to use when yes, used as directed on the product label.  It is a green product  Unless you physically drinking the solution or ingesting the treated wood they would be no harm, it is a borate based product so slight contact with skin would not be absorbed or harmful and washing off with soap and water when contact is made would be recommended and wearing safety gear to prevent contact.

  • Asked by William from Valdosta, Ga
    06/01/2021
    Q
Will existing mold on rough cut pine interfere with the application of Bora-Care and does the wood have to be sealed after applying Bora-Care to ensure effectiveness? Can I leave the wood raw after the application?
    A

Mold on rough cut pine should not affect the efficacy of Boracare, if you do need to treat for mold, we recommend to use Boracare with Moldcare instead. If the wood is part of an outside structure, we do recommend staining it to lengthen the life of the wood and the efficacy of the product, however you do no have to.

  • Asked by Andrew from Thousand Oaks, Ca

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care on an oak floor that has already been varnished?
Powder post beetles are popping up
    A

Boracare is only able to penetrate into raw, untreated, unstained or painted wood therefore it would not penetrate into plywood with varnish on it.  You will need to sand down to the raw wood or pull up the flooring to expose the unvarnished underside and treat that.

    Q
Can I use Boracare to treat a stump? Do I need to remove the bark?
I have a maple stump with two trunks that I intend to leave in the ground. It has what looks like carpenter ant damage on the top of one of the trunks. I'd like to treat it to preserve the trunk. Will the treatment still be effective if I only apply to the top of the trunk? Would I need to remove the bark from the rest of the stump?
    A

Bora-Care should only be used on raw cut wood not any tree stump.
