    Q
    Is Bora-Care available premixed?
    A
Bora-Care does not come ready to use.  We do carry the Jecta.  Jecta has the effectiveness of Bora-Care in a gel form for sealed or hard-to-reach wood.  Jecta is a ready-to-use injectable borate gel used by pest management professionals to protect sealed or inaccessible wood from termites and other wood destroying organisms. It is typically used to reach places where Bora-Care cannot be applied effectively.

    A
Bora-Care will be your best option because it will last the entire life of the wood.
One gallon of Bora-Care will treat approximately 100 lineal feet of 2 x 4 stud wall. This includes sill plate and header.

    Q
How do I treat for flying dry wood termites with no visible infestation?
    A
The only prevention for drywood termites would be to use a wood preservative to try and protect the structure from future infestation. Boracare is our most popular wood treatment product, and once applied, it is there for the life of the wood.

    Q
Can Boracare be applied over Timbor?
I had my workshop professionally treated for active powderpost beetles and they used Timbor. However, after 4 months they are still active! They are in rough cut pine 4x8 ceiling joists. I have read Boracare is better for penetration. Should I retreat with Boracare myself or a second coat of Timbor. I am also confused about how long it takes ppb to die. I know they have to eat to the borax first. Should I just wait?
    A

Bora-Care is always the recommended product for treating active Powderpost Beetles because it penetrates deeper into the wood, up to 8 inches with 2 applications.  Timbor will only go about 1/4 inch so it will not get to the larvae already in the wood.  Bora-Care can take up to 30 days or more to penetrate all the way through a piece of wood and this will vary depending on how thick the wood is and the moisture content.   We would recommend applying the Bora-Care and not a second application of Timbor.  The larvae stage in the life of the Powderpost beetle is the longest, lasting from 1 to 10 years before it will mature to adulthood so it can take time to completely erradicate them.

Please take a moment to read over our article on How to Get Rid of Powderpost Beetles.

    Q
Will BoraCare penetrate into the wood if I have pressure washed the wood that only had been stained before
We have powder post beetles in our outside porch and railings that is raw cut lumber and has only been stained. Will this penetrate into the wood if I pressure wash the wood first? This is a wrap around porch on a cabin.
    A
Bora-Care can only be used on raw, untreated, unsealed wood. If you are trying to treat wood that is already stained or sealed, you either have to sand the finish off completely like you have done on some of the other wood, or your only other option is to drill holes in the areas that you see damaged and inject the Bora-Care directly into the wood; bypassing the stained layer.  Pressure washing the wood does not remove the stain.

    Q
Is Boracare the product for me? Will the salt dull cutting tools after it is dry?
I am air drying furniture lumber, from my property, I harvested and had sawn. It is very important to me that anything I put on the wood for powder post beetles, and other critters, not add or change any of the colors that naturally occur in the wood. It is also important to me that I am not adding additional hazards of toxicity, I always use a respirator when I machine and build things from any wood, but I don't want to add any hazard to the completed wood. I only use the natural colors in the wood, and as a final finish will use an oil or clear finish. Is Boracare the product for me? Will the salt dull cutting tools after it is dry?
    A
You should use a wood treatment product to treat powder post beetles.  Bora-Care is the best wood treatment product available. It will penetrate through the wood and kill the larvae eating the wood no matter where they are in the wood.  However, it can only be applied to raw wood.  It cannot be applied to wood that is painted, stained, or sealed.  If your wood is painted, stained, or sealed, then you will need to drill holes and inject Bora-Care or sand the finish off of the wood, treat with Bora-Care, and then refinish the wood.

    Q
What product would you recommend to use in ulv fogger to treat fungus in crawl space?
    A
We would recommend using Boracare with Moldcare as it will treat and prevent mold and wood boring insects. Boracare with Moldcare will treat 1250 square feet of a crawl space or attic when mixed at the labeled rate of 1 gallon of bora-care with mold care and 5 gallons of water. Please see label for complete application directions and yield amounts. We do not recommend foggine.

Old House Wood Bore Finished Logs
I have a log home that was sand blasted and refinished about 4 years ago. I now see what I believe to be Old House Wood bore beetles coming out. I see reference to injection the product
    A
If the inside of the logs are not finished you can certainly apply a few coats of the Boracare from the inside but it is not guaranteed it will penetrate all the way through the wood with the finish on the other side. If you were injecting from the outside, another product made by Nisus like the Boracare woudl be better. The product is Jecta and is specifically designed to drill holes and treat finished wood that cant be stripped or sanded down for an application of Boracare.

    Q
What do I use in crawl space to clean wood of fungus?
    A
Mold Clean will not prevent the fungus, but will remove staining and discoloration. We would recommend using Boracare with Moldcare as it will treat and prevent mold and wood boring insects. It should be applied prior to the application.

The Boracare has gelled in the jug and will not pour easily; how do I re-liquify it?

The consistency of Boracare is very thick. We do recommend that you mix it in a bucket first with very hot water before putting it into a sprayer. If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

    Q
    Boracare Wall Void Foaming
I'm preparing to foam the wall voids of my home with boracare and profoam to prevent future subterranean termites infestations. I'll use a 2:1 ratio and a foamer comparable to your poly foamer. 1. How high should I drill the hole between each stud? 2. Should I drill a single hole in the center between the studs or should I drill multiple holes between each stud? 3. How much foam should I dispense between each stud and how do I gauge the proper amount of foam? 4. Are there any differences in application techniques between walls insulated with fiberglass batting and non-insulated walls?
    A
Drill holes every 18-24 inches adjacent to the side of each stud and inject at least 1/3 fluid ounce of Bora-Care solution per hole. You will be drilling multiple holes on the side of each stud. Drill at least one hole per stud bay near the floor to treat the base plate in each void. There are no differences between the applications in the different walls. The foam will expand inside and wall and kill the termites. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Q
Reclaimed Wood with Post Hole Beetle Infestation
I have roughly 200 Sq ft of reclaimed barn wood that I'm trying to use to build some tables, night stands, etc with. It's all 1 inch thick and has signs of a current infestation of post hole beetles. (Fresh powder around new holes). I think boracare would be my best bet because it will penetrate throughout from one side. Should 1 gallon cover this and leave me a good bit left over? Can I just treat from one side? Will it leave any residue or color behind that will not allow me to use the wood for projects? I really want to salvage this wood because it's so hard to find good reclaimed wood. Please let me know if I have any other options as well.
    A
Bora-Care is the best wood treatment product available.  Bora-Care will penetrate through the wood and kill the larvae eating the wood no matter where they are in the wood and will penetrate up to 4 inches with one application so applying to only one side of 1 inch thick wood will be fine.  One gallon should be enough but please refer to the Dimensional Lumber Bulletin.  Bora-Care will dry clear and not leave any visable residue when used as directed.

    Q
Could there be visible Powderpost Beetle powder after treating with BoraCare and staining?
After treating raw poplar wood board and batt siding on my house twice with 1 to 1 ratio BoraCare then staining with an oil base stain, I have active Powderpost Beetle exit holes in the wood. Is it possible for beetles to exit and the wood still be treated for future infestations?
    A
Yes, the wood that you have treated with BoraCare is still treated for future infestations. The larvae that were present in the holes when you treated, still have to hatch and consume the wood for it to eradicate the population. The exit holes and powder you are experiencing are those new hatchlings of Powderpost Beetles.  According to the BoraCare label when treating for Powderpost Beetles, watiing 6 weeks is recommended before staining or painting the wood to give any unhatched larvae time to exit.  You can contact Nisus at 1-800-264-0870 directly for any helpful tips and suggestions on any reapplications or preventative techniques that might be necessary. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Have powder post beetles in my dirt floor basement, would fogger work for Boracare to get under floor joist
    A
Boracare is too thick to be used in a fogger and must be applied by spraying or painting directly to the wood that is infested or by foaming.

How should we protect the area of the house near where we are spraying? Does the liquid travel far in the air
    A
When using BoraCare and overspray is a concern, we recommed using plastic tarps or coverings to protect any surface you do not want to come into contact with your treatment. You should also wera a protective coverall, respirator, gloves and goggles to protect yourself. You can find all of the personal safety equipment in our Professional Safety Kit.

    Q
How much wood to treat for Powderpost Beetles?
Found two joist where they exit and saw dust I sprayed the area near (borecare) , only 1/2 the basement and entire beam where I saw holes. and the flooring above. Do I need to do entire basement, i.e. sill plates etc or just do near the area where damage occurred?
    A
Applying Boracare where you had the damage should be sufficient. While Boracare does aborb completely through the wood, it will not spread throughout to untreated parts of the wood. If there are already eggs in the wood that is not treated, you will have to reapply the Boracare if and when you notice activity or damage.
