    Q
How can I tell if Boracare is being absorbed as needed versus evaporating?
I want to treat my 50 year old tongue and groove ceiling which has some termites. The wood has a transparent stain on it that doesn't seem water repellant. How can I tell if the Boracare is being absorbed adequately? Stripping the entire ceiling or drilling holes throughout would be an enormous job so I would like to try Boracare on a small area and see whether it is going to work before deciding what to do with the rest.
    A
If there is any type of stain on the wood you are treating, Boracare will not absorb properly. The wood will need to be sanded down in order to treat the wood. You do not need to drill holes into the wood in order to apply Boracare. You can either paint it on or use a sprayer. For what you are doing, painting Boracare on the wood would likely be the easiest. Once it is dry, you can apply a second coat for added protection. Once that has dried, the wood can be stained again.

    Q
Do you have inserts to be placed in walls for repeat injections of termiticides?
I am trying to decide how I will treat the header of our house for Formosan termite attacks. We have what one contractor called a conducive condition in that he believes that the insulation wrapping our house is not a sufficient moisture barrier. This was the excuse used by Terminix to not fully cover damage. Lord willing, I will inject each wall void with BoraCare as a foam, which brings up another question: How do I calculate the required volume of BoaraCare foam to fill the voids? In other words, how much expansion should I anticipate per say gallon of 1:1 mix of BoraCare with ProFoam? I will be using a Chapin 1 gallon foamer - all supplies have been purchased from you all already. Another question: I read somewhere where one can place inserts in wood that can the used to inject termiticides, BoraCare (NOT as a foam, but as aqueous mix). I did not find them on your site. Maybe they are not necessary, but I wonder if they would make it neater for application. I realize that this drilling in to header from inside the house (brick outside beyond the wood framing), but this place (Bluewater Bay, in Niceville, FL) is horrible- ~$21,000 damage last year, maybe the same this year. We have had a new roof put a couple of weeks ago. I purchased a Termatrac T3i and have used that successfully to find an infestation that I have some professionals treating (not Terminix, of course- we learned about them the hard way).
    A
I'm going to try and answer this as simply as possible but if any of it doesnt make sense please call in as it may be easier to explain over the phone. If you use boracare, in either its liquid or foam form and appy it to raw natural wood, it will absorb into the wood, become one with the wood, and last for the life of the wood. This means one proper application of Boracare will eliminate any termites currently in the wood and protect it from any future termite infestations for the life of the wood. Basicaly if a colony comes along in the future and tries to start taking up residence in a piece you have thoroughly treated with Boracare, it will die once it starts consuming the wood and ingesting the Boracare. Active infesatation rate is 1:1, preventative is 5:1. If you choose to foam you would want to use about 4 ounces of the Pro Foam concentrate to each gallon of mixture in the Chapin foamer of Boracare and water. That is a good rate for an even expansion. That being said, you should not be trying to fill the entire void. No exterminator would do that or even consider doing that even if you wanted to pay them to. The proper way to do it is to drill holes on either side of any stud, frame, or header and allow the foam to run down the sides of the wood and absorb in and expand as close to the wood as possible. You want it to aborb into the wood, not the insulation. Also, I am not aware of any inserts like what you mentioned on the market.

    Q
Can I use BoraCare on an infested chair with dry wood termites? This chair is not painted.
    A
Yes, you will want to use Boracare on infested furniture at a 1:1 ratio. Treat all accessible areas of the raw wood to ensure the Boracare is absorbed completely throughout the wood. After 1st application, let dry for approx 30 min - 1 hour and do a 2nd coat. After both applications, it is recommended you may apply a stain or clear coat to protect your treatment. Please refer to page 4 of product label for detailed instructions.

    Q
    Penetrate stained window frame?
I am pretty sure that I have a powderpost beetle infestation in a window frame that was stained 5 years ago but not sealed as far as I know. Another website says this: "However, stain by itself will not stop Boracare from penetrating. If it has weathered for a year or two, than applying Boracare before you next apply some stain would be best." So would it be worth a try to treat with Boracare before going to the trouble of stripping and restaining the wood?
    A
In order to get the full benefits of using Boracare, the label states it is to be used on raw untreated wood. We recommend sanding or stripping the wood, then applying the Boracare

    Q
Why didn't Bora-Care soak into my new OSB floor?
I recently treated a floor with Bora-Care. The floor was standard, new, untreated OSB flooring (no stains). I applied Bora-Care with a sprayer at a 1:1 ratio; Bora-Care/hot water were well-mixed in a separate container, not in the sprayer. The temperature of the air around the floor at the time of treatment was 50-55 degrees F, and it did not freeze for several days after that. Now, several days after treatment, there are small syrup-like "puddles" of Bora-Care in different places across the floor that did not seem to soak into the OSB. The puddles are still liquid. Any idea how I can fix the puddling problem so that the floor dries like it should?
    A
We have not heard of this issue before. Therefore, we would recommend that you contact the manufacturer, Nisus for further assistance. Nisus may be reached at 800-264-0870.

    Q
What ratio should I use for pretreatment
Am I really supposed to use a whole gallon of boracare with 1 gallon of water...depending on what I have to do that can get as expensive as a liquid soil treatment...help me out with this one please...thanks
    A

Boracare is not meant to be used as soil treatment product and should not be used in that way. Boracare is only labeld to treat termites, wood destroying insects, powderpost beetles on raw undtreated wood. For preventative treatments, mix at 5:1 ratio and 1:1 ratio for active treatments.

Termidor SC is the best product for soil barrier treatments and will last 10 years in the soil. Please take a look at Termite Control Articles here and How To Do Your Own Termite Treatment Article for more detailed information.

    Q
What is the mixing ratio for active drywood termites and how many sq feet will a 25 gallon sprayer cover?
I have a 25 gal. sprayer, How much Bora- Care will I need to treat active dry-wood termites in my 25 gal. sprayer. How many sq. feet will this cover?
    A

For an active Drywood termite infestation, mix 1 gallon of BoraCare with 1 gallon of water.

One gallon of Bora-Care will treat approximately 100 lineal feet of 2 x 4 stud wall. Typically, one gallon of concentrate Bora-Care will treat 800 square feet of a 2x4 stud wall, and 500 square feet of a crawl space or attic.

Depending on how big of an area and what specifically you are treating for drywood termites (floors, furniture, crawlspace, etc) will depend on how much BoraCare to use.

    Q
We are remodeling 2 bathrooms and have noticed old termite tunnels/trails. There aren't any termites present.
Should we treat the area behind the walls/tile where the old termite evidence is. If so, what is the best product or application we should use?
    A
You could treat the wood in the area with a product like Bora-Care to protect it from future termite infestation.  For further protection doing a treatment outside would be most recommended.  Our How To Do A Termite Treatment article explains exactly what to do, mainly placing a protective perimeter around the outside by trenching.

    Q
Can I use both Boracare and Boracare with MoldCare?
I'm not sure if my 100 year old basement has white fungus or a white mold. I want to be sure both fungus and mold are removed. This old house has had post powder Beatles and termites in the past. What product?
    A
Yes, if you are needing to treat an active infestation of powder post beetles and you suspect mold you would need to use both the Boracare and the Boracare with MoldCare following the instructions on each product label.  If you are just wanting to use as preventative than just the Boracare with Moldcare would be needed.

Can I treat my house before I spray for termites?
    A
We apologize but we are not completel sure what you mean by this? If you are asking if you can spray this on the wood studs, footers, headers and joists for your home as its being built for termite protection on raw wood, then yes.

    Q
How do we keep termites out of a barn?
We recently purchased a property that had a termite problem in the past and is surrounded by Oak Trees. I plan to use Dominion around the house and shed, but the barn is exposed wood beams and old telephone poles. We will be enclosing the barn and insulating it for horses, and would like to protect the wooden beams. What should we do to keep the termites out of the rafters and support beams?
    A
Dominion is a great choice to put up your perimeter treatment. You would want to treat the beams and rafters with Boracare.  You can spray or paint the mixture on.

    I have raw unfinished 5/4 x 4 x 10 t&g fir flooring I'm gonna use on a covered porch.
Can I use Bora-Care in a troth to soak my boards to prevent them from rotting in the future? If so, how long should I wait to paint and install after soaking?
    A
Bora-Care can be applied to raw wood and once it is completely dried can be painted or stained and sealed (especially if it is on wood outside). It should be applied as a spray or painted on the wood not soaked in a container. Did you want to treat an animal trough as well?

    Q
I have noticed saw dust on my wood fence and assume it is carpenter ants. What do you recommend to treat them?
    A
Assuming that you are treating carpenter ants, you can apply Bora-Care to any areas that have an active infestation of powder post beetles, termites or carpenter ants. It will need to be treated at the rate of 1:1 and all other areas where there is no activity can be used 5:1. Once the Boracare has been applied to the fence, you will need to seal/stain/paint it to keep the rain from slowly washing it away over the years. If sealed, the Boracare will last for the life of the wood after application. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
