    Q
After treating with Bora Care can I use a wood hardener?
I removed dry rot and loose wood on a garaged door and will treat with Bora Care. After the BC has cured, can I treat the wood with Elmer's 16-oz. Rotted Wood Stabilizer? The area will then be filled in with bondo and painted.
    A
Since Borates from Boracare will be evenly distributed throughout the wood, applying wood hardener to the areas that were effected by rot will not have any adverse effects.

    Q
    Treat upholstered chair for termites
My father passed away and I'm trying to save his favorite chair for my sister. The problem is that it is completly upholstered and I can't get to all the wood structures without ruining it. I tried using Cy-Kick aerosol and drilled small holes through the base of the chair to try to get into the interior of it and sprayed it where It would reach but I'm unable to get it on all the wood, let alone try to find the point of infestation. I wapped it up in a large tarp for a few days hoping the fumes would penatrate the entire chair but when I unwrap it I find several dozen dead small "swarmers" but some that are still alive as well. Is there any product you can recommend that may work without damaging or removing the Upholstery? If I could find a product that was more of a "gas" I could wrap it up in plastic again and leave it for a while. Ironically I had my house tarped and treated for termites a few months ago and it would have been so easy to put the chair in my house then if I would have known. I really want to save this chair for sentimental reasons. Thanks for any help you can give me. Dave
    A
For furniture your options are limited for treatment. If the wood is in its all natural raw state without any stains or finishes on it you can use a product like Boracare. Boracare will absorb all the way into the wood and eliminate any infestation that is there and last for the life of the wood. It does not stain the wood or leave behind any visible residue, but becomes one with the wood and any insect that ingests it dies. If the furniture has a finish on it, you would either have to drill holes throughout it and inject something like the Boracare or a foam, or the option most go with, hire a company to fumigate it.

    Q
Subterranean Termite Infestation - Boracare and Outside Perimeter Treatment
I have a Subterranean Termite Infestation. They are located in two areas along the sill plate and joists and also an earth filled stoop, sill and joists. I would like to apply Boracare as an immediate treatment (knockdown) and then do the perimeter treatment with Fipronil or Altriset based chemical. Electrical wires are stapled along some areas of the sill. Should the staples be removed to allow better exposed surface area of the wood or can they be left in place? Should a triple carrying beam (or any multi-layered) in the house be drilled on either side to apply the Bora-Care to the center beam?
    A

We recommend doing the treatment with the Fipronil or Altriset first, waiting 90 days and then following up with the Boracare. This will allow the termites to go back to the colony with the active ingredient on their body and pass it around the colony causing the entire colony to collapse. If you treat with Boracare first, you risk only killing the termites present and not getting rid of the entire colony.

Since all surfaces of the wood need to be treated, we would recommend you remove any item that is blocking the application from reaching the wood. You should drill through any layered beam to get the solution all the way to the next beam when necessary.

    Q
I need your most effective termite control for drywood & subterranean termites.
    Do you ship to CA?
    A
Subterranean termites and dry wood termites are two very different insects that require two very different treatments. We recommend that you get your termite infestation identified before you select a treatment method to be sure you are choosing the proper treatment method. Here two articles that can help you learn the differences between the two types of termites: Drywood Termites or Subterranean Termites. If you are still unsure after reading the articles you can always call in a professional company. Almost all termite companies will offer a free inspection and they will tell you what type of termites you are dealing with and how they recommend treating for the. At that point you can choose to hire them or do it your self. Termidor SC is the top termite product on the market. Termidor is completely undetectable by termites and once termites touch it they contact, ingest and spread the termiticide until it eliminates the entire colony. Termidor controls all types of termites including Subterranean, Formosan, and Drywood termites though the application method will be different for each type of termite. Both Termidor SC and Bora-Care are able to be shipped to California. We offer fast, free shipping. Please let us know if you need anything else. 866.581.7378

    Q
Is there a temperature requirement for treating with Boracare?
I am treating the interior of a barn for powder post beetles. I know the product should not be stored in freezing temperatures but can the product be applied if the temperature is below freezing? Will it interfere with absorption?
    A
You really want to avoid applying any product in below freezing temperatures because the water part of the mixture can separate and freeze. Do try to apply on a day where the temperatures are above freezing.

    Q
Can I mix Bora-care and Steri-fab to take care of a mold infestation?
    A
Sterifab is not labeled to treat mold. Boracare alone will not treat mold. You would want to use a product called Boracare with Moldcare to kill existing mold and to prevent future mold growth.

    Q
    Is Bora-Care safe for carpet?
If we treat the feet of the furniture and let it dry, will the treated surface damage carpet?
    A
Bora-Care will only work on completely raw natural wood with no stains, paints or finishes on it. If the feet of the furniture are in the natural untreated state, then you can apply Bora-Care to them. You will want to take the furniture outside to treat or put on a surface that will prevent the Bora-Care from getting on other surfaces as the wet version is very thick. Once the application dries into the wood, it will not come out of the wood and get on the carpet and will leave no visible residue on the wood. Only the wet mixture could potentially cause damage to the carpet if sprayed.

    Q
Last week in a chat with one of your reps I asked if Bora Care would corrode an aluninum termite sheild
on top of my foundation blocks and was told that it would not harm aluminum or copper. While reading the MSDS I read in Section 10 that it may corrode aluminum. What product can I use to treat my sill plate that won't damage the aluminum?
    A
We have spoken with the manufacturer of Bora-Care, Nisus, and they have stated that there is no problem with aluminum or copper or other metals with a Bora-Care application.  There has been over 1.5 million houses treated over the past 15 years with no reported adverse effects and we have also done direct corrosion studies with Bora-Care and aluminum that show no corrosion.  They are also in the process of taking the current wording off the MSDS which is directed only to manufacturing and not to the finished solution.

    Q
I've got small piles of dust in the corners of my cabinets.
Termite guy came by and said it wasn't termites. There doesn't seem to be any droppings, only fine powdered wood in the corners, near hinges
    A
It sounds like you could be dealing with Powderpost Beetles.   You should use a wood treatment product to treat powder post beetles.  Bora-Care is the best wood treatment product available.  Bora-Care will penetrate through the wood and kill the larvae eating the wood no matter where they are in the wood.  However, it can only be applied to raw wood.  It cannot be applied to wood that is painted, stained, or sealed.  If your wood is painted, stained, or sealed, then you will need to drill holes and inject Bora-Care or sand the finish off of the wood, treat with Bora-Care, and then refinish the wood. Dominion is not a wood treatment product and will not move through the wood.  You should use a wood treatment product like Bora-Care.  Please take a moment to read over our article on How to Get Rid of Powderpost Beetles.

    Q
How much do i sand my fence before applying BoraCare?
My yard fence is made of painted 4x4, 2x4 and 2x2 boards. Is it sufficient to sand only one side of each board for effective application of BoraCare, or to I need to sand all 4 sides of each?
    A
For best penetration and protection it is recommended by the manufacturer to sand all 4 sides of the wood so that you can apply the Boracare to all 4 sides to ensure complete treatment of the wood. If you do chose to only sand 1 or 2 sides of the wood make sure all paint particles are removed and you are only applying to pure raw wood and you may need to make multiple coats to ensure the product moves all the way through the wood.

    Q
If I have previously treated wood with TimBor can I subsequently treat with BoraCare?
I am just wondering if the absorption of the BoraCare will be negatively affected by the previously applied TimBor???
    A
Yes, you can treat the same wood with the Boracare and the previous treatment with the Timbor will have no effect on the absorption. Both products are borate based and become one with the wood after applied.

  • Asked by Nate from Southern California

    Q
Boracare application to double-layered hardwood flooring?
I have signs of dry wood termites in my hardwood flooring. The home is very old, has no sub-flooring and the previous owner laid new hardwoods over the original hardwoods. I have noticed about 6 or 8 kick out holes and some minor amounts of droppings on the surface of the floor inside my home. I am assuming that the termites are coming from the underside of the flooring via the crawl space. The degree of infestation in the original flooring is not known at this time. So I guess my question is would BoraCare be effective in this application? Since there are two layers of hardwoods, would treating only the unfinished underside of the original flooring have any affect on the upper layer of hardwood flooring? If not, what product, if any, might be useful for treating the top layer of flooring? Thanks.
    A
Bora-Care will only penetrate the wood that it is applied to.  If you want the top flooring to protected as well, you should treat those also as long as they are unfinished.  If your flooring is already finished with a stain and sealant, then you either have to sand off the finish and the re-finsh after applying Bora-Care, or you can drill holes into the infested pieces and inject Bora-Care.
