We would suggest consulting with your county cooperative extension office for proper identification of the cause of brown spots prior to applying any fertilizer. These spots could be from lawn disease or insects in the soil so a positive id would be best. The Cooperative Extension Office can also perform soil tests to determine your soil nutrient needs for fertilizing the turf.
