    Q
Is there a difference between "voles" and "meadow voles"?
I'm confused since there is a discrepancy in the description of Contrac and in a question/answer from Mike in Caseyville, Il. In the description of Contrac it includes "meadow voles", yet in your response to Mike, you say to use Kaput. Which is preferred? We have been using Kaput and it is being eaten, but not sure of its effectiveness, since they seem to keep eating the bait. However, we may have a large infestation and it will take some time to eliminate all of them. Do you still recommend the Kaput over Contrac?
    A

The question you are referring to may be outdated, so we will be sure to look into that.  Contrac previously was not labeled for voles at all, but the labeling has changed in the past couple of years to include meadow voles (the most common vole species) in addition to rats and mice.  Before this change was made, Kaput Rat & Mouse Bait and Kaput Combo Mini Blocks were the only rodent baits that we carried that were labeled for voles.  Either Kaput or Contrac will work to eradicate voles, but as you said, if the population is very large, complete control will take some time.  It is a good idea to continue to make the bait available as long as the voles are still eating it.  We have a vole control guide on our site here that may be helpful.

    Q
I think my little dog may have licked one of the Contrac blox. Will this harm her?
    A

Contrac Blox can be toxic to animals if enough is consumed, although an antidote, Vitamin K1 is readily available from your vet.  If you believe your pet consumed any amount of this product, it is important to contact your vet or pet poison control as soon as possible.

    Q
What is the shelf life of Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide?
Have found an 18 lb bucket to purchase but don't want it to lose its effectiveness if not used up in a year or 2.
    A

If the Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide bucket is unopened and sealed, the product will last 2 -3 years, if kept away from extreme temperatures.  Once the bucket is opened, it should last 1 year in normal conditions.

    Q
    Is Contrac safe for dogs?
    A

Secondary poisoning is very minimal with Contrac and an antidote to the poison (vitamin K1) is readily available. We would suggest contacting your vet if you believe your animal has ingested this product. Rodenticides such as Contrac All-Weather Blox must be used in tamper-resistant bait stations so that non-target animals like dogs do not have access to the bait.

    Q
How quick does Contrac All-Weather Blox work?
I believe we have 1 rat in our basement. I've found it's burrow in our wall. Set a contrac blox outside the borrow, disappeared overnight. Placed two more in the same spot and they were untouched for 2 nights now. Also, snap traps that were constantly having the bait taken off them and not triggering are also no longer being emptied of bait. Is it possible the rat died after 24hrs and only eating one block? Don't want to risk taking that part of the wall down and disturb his burrow to have the rat move to a new location and die if I'm not quick enough to catch him once I open the wall.
    A

The Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide is an anti-coagulant, which means that once the rat has eaten this product, they begin to bleed to death from the inside.  The rat first becomes sick, and then grows tired and weak and passes in its sleep.  It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on how much the rat has eaten.

    Q
Can you put Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide indoors?
    A

Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide can be used indoors but only if they are secured in tamper-resistant bait stations. Using tamper-resistant bait stations keep kids and pets from accessing the bait but also, secures the bait blox to help with monitoring activity. If the bait blox are not secured, the rodents will take the blox to the nest, therefore, making it difficult to see if they are consuming the bait. I have included the instructions per the Contrac Blox product label regarding the number of blox that should be used over certain linear footage.

RATS: Place 3 to 16 bait blocks (at intervals of 15 to 30 feet) per placement in infested areas. Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 10 days or until signs of rat activity cease.

MICE AND MEADOW VOLES*: Place 1 block per placement. Space placements at 8- to 12-foot intervals in infested areas. Two blocks may be needed at points of very high activity. Maintain
an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 15 days or until signs of
mouse or meadow vole* activity cease.

    Q
Can I use Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide to get rid of a squirrel that is in my living room wall?
Which of your products will encourage the squirrel to get out. I am aware that finding how it got in is important. But now i just want it ouit.
    A

Since squirrels are in the same family as rats/mice, it is possible the bait matrix in the Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide could be attractive to squirrels also. While rodenticides can be used indoors for rodent control, we typically do not recommend baiting for rodents indoors as the bait can draw insects and can also keep drawing the rodents into the home. We would recommend using the Contrac Blox in the tamper resistant bait stations outside the home around the structure.

If you know where the squirrels are entering you can use an Tomahawk One Way Door Excluder where they are entering the attic. This will allow the squirrells to exit through the hole, but not get back in. Exclusion Methods with Copper Mesh or Xcluder Wire are great ways to seal up holes to keep mice, rats and squirrels out.

  • Asked by Jerry from Bremerton Wa

    Q
I have rats under my strawberry plants. Can I use Contrac?
I have a good crop of strawberries but holes under foliage are blocked with ripe strawberries. There are numerus berries both ripe and not ripe that are severed from plants. The plants are vigorous but are looking like a kid may have picked the fruit, plants a little beet up. Garden is well fenced with 4 ft high hog wire with 2"x3" openings. I think I must have a rat problem but since the darned thigs are very smart I'm not sure how to eradicate them. Is there another creature that may be doing the damage? I have raspberries and blueberries that may also have critters burrowing under them I have put out motomoco for mole control.
    A

There are many kinds of rodents, birds, or other small animals that could be eating a fresh crop of fruit. A mesh or fence opening that is 2” x 3” is large enough for mice, rats, voles, chipmunks, and more to come and go as they please. You may consider denser fencing, or using rodenticide in bait stations around the structure or along fencelines (as long as it is within 100 feet of the house) such as those in our Rodent Baiting Kit. If you are able to inspect more for signs like droppings, then you may be able to determine what is there and use appropriate traps for them. Be sure, also, that you are picking fruit as it is ripe and removing fallen fruit from the ground.

You may consider a repellent such as Nature’s Defense Organic Animal Repellent around the edge of the garden, but you may not be able to overcome the habits these animals have already developed.

    Q
What happens if Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide contacts water?
When this product comes into contact with water, does it create a poisonous gas or toxic fumes?
    A

Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide would not release any type of fume or gas if it contacts water.  Water would just cause the product to be unattractive to rodents as it could mold and sour due to exposure.

    Q
    Does Contrac contain glass?
    A
Contrac does not contain glass. It contains food based ingredients that attract the rodents to the bait for consumption. It is an anti-coagulant which means once the mice eat this product they begin to bleed to death from the inside.  The mice first become sick, and then grow tired and weak and pass in their sleep.  It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on how much the mice have eaten.  They do not need water for the product to work.

I Have had a rodent problem since last year. It went away and just came back this week. I tried all the mouse traps and decon in the World but it did not kill it. Can you please identify what rodent I'm dealing with and the killer I need? Here is a picture of it's poo: http://imgur.com/TNGQgOv (I know how lovely)
    A

We apologize, we could not open that link. We would recommend to please send us a clear picture of the rodent droppings or contact your Cooperative Extension Office.

    Q
Are chipmunks attracted to Contrac Blox Rodenticide?
Already using traps for chipmunks but need more in the arsenal.
    A

We cannot recommend that you use Contrac Blox Rodenticide or any other baits for chipmunk control since these products are not registered for that use. There are food attractants in any rodenticide that may be attractive to non-target animals, which is part of the reason these baits should be used in tamper-resistant stations. We can only recommend trapping and repellents for chipmunk control. You may want to contact your local Wildlife/Animal Control Department for any other available options in your area.

    Q
Can I use Contrac Blox Rodenticide for rats in my attic?
I have rats in the attic. Can I use this? Will they die in the attic and how likely is it that the rats actually live up there instead of just coming in every now and then?
    A

We do not recommend baiting for rodents indoors as the bait can draw in insects. We would recommend snap traps or glueboards indoors. Rodents will go back and forth looking for food and harborage supplies. We recommend to also try and find out where they are entering and seal up those areas.

  • Asked by Hector from Anaheim, California

    Q
Does Contract Blox have any secondary effect on koi fish from rats that die in the pond?
    A

Contrac Blox Rodenticide and other similar products do have active ingredients that are toxic to fish, however secondary poisoning from a rodent that consumed the bait is generally only a concern with birds of prey or other scavengers that would actually eat the rodents who had consumed the bait. Per the SDS: "Do not apply this product directly to water or to areas where surface water is present or ot intertidal areas below the mean high water mark. Runoff also may be hazardous to aquatic organisms in water adjacent to treated areas...Bromadialone water solubility is extremely low (<0.1mg/l)."

We would recommend not using rodenticides near the pond or in a way that may contaminate the pond. You could use snap traps inside a bait station in areas outdoors where you do not wish to use rodenticides, such as the EZ Snap Rat Bait Station.

    Q
Could I use Contrac Blox instead of Terad3?
I am looking for something that comes in an 18-lb. pail. There are pets in the area.
    A

Contrac Blox would be a good option to replace the Terad3 blox. Be sure to continue using bait stations so that no non-target animals come in contact with it. Secondary poisoning is very minimal with Contrac and an antidote to the poison (vitamin K1) is readily available.

    Q
Will Contrac Blox bait fit triangle stations?
    A

We apologize, but the term "triangle stations" is a little vague.  We can tell you that the Contrac Blox are a standard size and will fit into most rodent bait stations, including triangle-shaped stations like the Protecta RTU Mouse Bait Station.

    Q
If Contrac Blox have been placed within the root drip zone of pear and other fruit trees, is the fruit from these trees still safe for human consumption?
    A

If the Contrac Blox have been used properly within bait stations, then there should be no concern about the bait contaminating any edibles. The anti-coagulant active ingredient in Contrac is not absorbed systemically into plants.

  • Asked by Robert from South Elgin, Il

    Q
How many deer mice will one block of Contrac kill? I.e. 5-10 , 20-30?
    A

? The number of rodents that 1 block will treat is undeterminable. Place 3 to 16 Contrac Blox (usually at intervals of 15 to 30 feet) per placement. Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 10 days or until signs of rat activity cease. Replace contaminated or spoiled bait immediately. Collect and dispose of all dead animals and leftover bait properly. To prevent reinfestation, limit sources of rodent food, water, and harborage as much as possible. If reinfestation does occur, repeat treatment. Where a continuous source of infestation is present, establish permanent bait stations and replenish as needed.
