When applying the Delta Dust Insecticide in wall voids and around electrical boxes the dust settles down in between the the studs and the sheetrock that make up the insides of your walls. There is no space for the dust to fall all the way down to the foundation of the home since there are studs, subflooring, pipes, wiring, etc in the walls. The dust settles down into the cracks and crevices and other areas that the insects crawl through. This is how they come in contact with the product and how it eliminates them.
Yes, Delta Dust can be applied with a hand duster.
If Delta Dust Insecticide is just applied in the attic and not the living areas or areas where people frequent, then there are no time restrictions for re-entering the home. When used inside living areas, it would only be applied to cracks and crevices and it is safe to return to areas once it has settled. Typically just 30 minutes-1 hour is fine.
Per the manufacturer, Delta Dust Insecticide will dry out the insects and they absorb it externally when they come in contact with it. Delta Dust works similar to how a wettable powder affects insects when they walk across a surface that it's applied to. Both have pyrethroids as the active and shut down nervous system. They don't have any research regarding the product absorbing pheromones and odors.
If you already have the Delta Dust Insecticide, you could certainly use that to dust the area the carpenter ants are coming in and out of along the tree. Any that walk through it will pick it up on their bodies and transfer it through the colony. However, if you have not yet purchased the Delta Dust, drenching the root zone, trunk and activity points of the tree with a product like Dominion 2L would likely provide a more thorough elimination of the carpenter ant colony in its entirety. You can also apply Maxforce Complete Granules around the trees and structure as well once the drenched areas are completely dry (when it is not raining also). Please take a few moments to review our treatment article/videos on How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants for a successful eradication.

Delta Dust Insecticide is an insecticide dust only and not a bait. While some insects can pick it up and transfer it to others they are in contact with, it alone will not eliminate a colony/nest unless you are directly dusting it or any holes where insects are coming and going. This process can take a few days or longer depending on the target pest and level of infestation.
