Larry from Cowlesville, Ny writes

Do I need to apply a pre-emergent fertilizer?

I over seeded my lawn last fall and applied Tenacity to kill crabgrass and other weeds. Lawn this spring has no visible weeds, but some bare areas due to density of killed off weeds. Should I over seed again now, or wait until fall. If in fall, do I need to apply a pre-emergent/fertilizer now. FYI - We are having a late spring this year in western NY; forecast is for warmer days from here on out. FYI - great web site and will continue to purchase products from you.

Answer:

When treating for crabgrass we would recommend that you use a product with Dithiopyr, like Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper with Dimension. Use at a rate of 4.6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft in the state of New York. I would wait to overseed the lawn in the fall for your cool season grass. Crabgrass typically germinates when soil temperatures reach 62 degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of 1 or 2 inches. Crabgrass preventers should be applied when soil temperatures reach 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
