    Q
I have ash trees and need to treat them as a home owner for emerald ash borers
    Please provide product recommendations
    A
Dominion 2L is labeled to use on trees to help protect against boring beetles like Emerald Ash Beetles. Treatments should begin in May or June and should be done every year to protect trees from the Emerald Ash Borers. Most people use a 5 gallon bucket or a large watering can to apply Dominion as a soil drench. You will need 0.1 to 0.2 fl. oz. (3 to 6 mL) of Dominion 2L per inch of trunk diameter for trees. It is recommended that you use the higher rate for boring beetles. The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per inch of trunk diameter for trees but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter for trees. Denser soils such as clay do not accept water as readily, so the lower volume of water is suggested.  Since sandy soils can accept more water, using the higher volume of water is preferred. After the soil drench has been applied you should water it in with at east 1/2 inch of water. Note: Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and trans-located throughout the tree or shrub. Root/soil drenches offer the advantage of requiring no special equipment to apply (other than a bucket or watering can). However, surface layers of organic matter, such as mulch or leaf litter, can bind the insecticide and reduce uptake. Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 10-14 days after applications to encourage uptake.

    Q
How often should I treat my crepe myrtle trees for black sooty mold with Dominion 2L Termiticide?
I applied a mixture during dormant mostly
    A

Dominion 2L is not a fungicide and would not treat any tree for black sooty mold. Dominion is often used as soil drench application to the base/root zone of trees to help with insects that do damage to the plant throughout the season such as whiteflies, aphids, borers, etc. Make sure you have correctly identified the issue on your crape myrtles as either disease or insect as the treatments would be very different for each. If its insects that are causing the sooty spots on the leaves, you would only need to do a single application of Dominion 2L to the roots of the plant per year. It does need to be applied when the trees are acively growing to absorb the product effectively.

    Q
Will Dominion 2L kill/deter carpenter bees from my log home?
I previously purchased Dominion 2L and Delta Dust to treat my log home against carpenter ants and carpenter bees. If I spray Dominion 2L on the fascia of my home will it kill the carpenter bees that are hovering around?
    A

Dominion 2L is not a detterent, it is a non-repellent. It is not labeled for carpenter bee control. It can be applied a foot up and a foot out directly up against the structure for crawling insects that forage inside the structure and in the soil trench/drilled holes for termite treatment and protection. Delta Dust can be applied to cracks and crevices, voids and the holes that the bees bored in the wood and/or siding. Please apply a liquid insecticide concentrate to the structure's surface for eradication. I have included an article below that I you will find helpful.

    Q
Can I use Dominion 2L as a soil drench on Elm trees for bark beetles?
My trees are over 60' tall and not practical for spraying.
    A

Dominion 2L would not work for elm bark beetles as it would not reach to the areas of the trees these beetles infest.  Effective treatment involves killing the beetles before they bore into bark in fall and when they first emerge in spring so protecting healthy trees is best. Timing is critical to reach the pests before they're under the protective bark.  You can use a product like Permethrin SFR for this.  There are also articles linked below that can help

    Q
How far apart and deep should you drill in the cement slab for a termite treatment?
    A
The answer to this question is also in our How To Do A Termite Treatment Article.  For your garage, porch, patios, or other contiguous slabs against the home, you will need to get the termiticide underneath the concrete against the foundation. To do this you will need a hammer drill with a 1/2" x 18" drill bit. You drill holes throughout the concrete about 3-4 inches away from the wall or foundation, and about every 10"-12" apart. Once the holes are drilled, you fill at the same rate you did the trench, 4 gallons per 10 feet. To fill these I would recommend using the one gallon sprayer on a "pin stream" setting so you can force the liquid down the hole and not splash it everywhere. You can also use a funnel and pour the termiticide down the holes. It is difficult to get 4 gallons per 10 feet in the holes, so it is important that you use a long drill bit, at least 18" long so you can bore out enough dirt to hold the termiticide. Once the holes are filled all you need to do is patch them with a concrete patch filler you can buy at Home Depot or you can use our Trebor plugs that will close the hole with no concrete mess.

    Q
I am concerned about Dominion 2L, which was "pumped into" the soil of a large oak tree in my back yard.
It was used to control borers. It was used in the front yard on two red bud trees for the same purpose. I have talked to other tree specialists who said that Dominion 2L was a strange product to use for this. I am concerned that it may remain in the soil and affect my quality of life. There is a stream under my property and I live relatively close to a lake. I am building a swimming pool in the area of the large oak tree. All the bees in my yard disappeared after the Dominion was applied. What Texas entity can test the soil for me? If this was not the correct product to apply, who can I report the alleged tree specialist to?
    A

We cannot comment on any work performed on your property by any professional. We recommend that you contact the manufacturer of Dominion 2L for additional information. They can be reached at 281.892.2500 (Control Solutions).
