    Q
Can I use Dominion 2L products to prevent termites? Must I dig a trench?
    I do not have termites.
    A
Yes, you can use Dominion2L to prevent Termites. If a colony moves in, this product will eradicate them by transfer kill. You would want to dig a 6inx6in trench around the structure. By applying Dominion 2L in the trench, you will be protected from subterranean termites for up to 7 years.

    Q
Can you explain how to apply Dominion 2L in a trench?
I read your article "How To Do A Termite Treatment" and got confused because I was under the impression that if I have a 30 ft long side of the house, I'd need to trench 4 6x6 holes (2 in the corners and 2 in between so that they're 10 linear feet from each other) and applying a total of 40 gallons of mixed Dominion 2L solution (10 gallons per hole). You suggested trenching only 1 hole and filling it with 30 gallons of solution. As I can imagine, doing it "my way" will provide with no-gap treatment along the side of the house without going deep; whereas "your way" will go deep (3 ft in depth since 10 gallons need to be applied per 1 foot of depth per product label) but not wide. Could you please clarify the issue with the holes and the depth? Thank you in advance!!!
    A
You will need to dig one long continuous trench that is 6 inches wide by 6 inches deep right up against the foundation of your home. You will then mark the trench off in 10 ft segments. For every 10 feet of trench you will then apply 4 gallons of diluted Dominion 2L. This is how all professional companies apply the product and this is how the product label specifies applying the product. (Please read the last paragraph on page 4 of the Dominion product label)

    Q
Can Dominion 2L be injected directly to holes drilled in a live tree?
Some "tree care" products are sold that provide a syringe to inject 5% Imidacloprid directly into the trunk of the tree affected by Bronze birch beetles etc as a way to quickly introduce the product to the insects. Can I dilute your product and use it in the same way?
    A
You can apply Dominion 2L as a drench any where between the base and drip line of the tree. You want to make sure that  you keep the soil moist for up to 7 days after applicaiton to ensure the product will be more quickly soaked into the root system. We do not recommend Injecting Dominion into the live tree. Please follow the product label for instructions.

    Q
How should I do a termite treatment around the foundation of my house with Dominion 2L?
    A

To do a termite treatment with Dominion 2L, it is recommended to trench the soil (6”X6” trench against foundation) to apply.  This will provide a 7 year barrier.  Please take a few moments to review our treatment article and videos on How to Perform a Termite Treatment.

    Q
How do I treat hemlock woolly adelgid by soil drench method using Dominion 2L?
    A
When using Dominion 2L as a soil drench for Hemlock Woolly Adelgids you should use 0.2 fl. oz. (3 to 6 mL) of Dominion 2L per inch of trunk diameter (D.B.H.) diluted in 1 pint - 1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter.    The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per inch of trunk diameter but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter. Denser soils such as clay do not accept water as readily, so the lower volume of water is suggested.  Since sandy soils can accept more water, using the higher volume of water is preferred. After the soil drench has been applied you should water it in with at east 1/2 inch of water. Note: Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and trans-located throughout the tree or shrub. Root/soil drenches offer the advantage of requiring no special equipment to apply (other than a bucket or watering can). However, surface layers of organic matter, such as mulch or leaf litter, can bind the insecticide and reduce uptake. Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 7-10 days after applications to encourage uptake.

    Q
why do I need to dig a trench when i can just spray Dominion 2L along the foundation?
    A
You want to dig a trench and apply Dominion 2L in the trench for many reasons. One, by applying the Dominion into the soil, you are allowing the product to bind and stay put for up to 7 years. Two, the depth of the trench ensures that the termites will come in contact with it. If you just spray you would have to reapply every 6 months and termites might not even come in contact with the solution, because it is not in the ground where they are. Please review our article " Barrier and Soil Treatment for Termites".

    Q
    Whitefly in ficus
I've done a root drench and also sprayed the hedges at the 1.5oz to 100 gallon rate about 10 days ago and then another round a couple days ago and it seems that the whitefly numbers are actually increasing. There are clouds of whiteflies above the shrubs where previously there were not. The root drench was at a higher rate as recommended on the label. I'm concerned that this product does not work as indicated.
    A
Please be advised that it can take 8 weeks a systemic product to be translocated throughout the plant.  If you are trying to treat an active infestation, doing a foliar spray with a product like Talstar P is the better option because it will help to kill anything that you spray directly and will leave a residual of up to 30 days.  Please be advised that the instructions on the product label should always be followed.  Mixing a product stronger or applying more often than stated does not make it any stronger or help it to be absorbed quicker.

    Q
Can I use Dominion 2L as a soil drench on Elm trees for bark beetles?
My trees are over 60' tall and not practical for spraying.
    A

Dominion 2L would not work for elm bark beetles as it would not reach to the areas of the trees these beetles infest.  Effective treatment involves killing the beetles before they bore into bark in fall and when they first emerge in spring so protecting healthy trees is best. Timing is critical to reach the pests before they're under the protective bark.  You can use a product like Permethrin SFR for this.  There are also articles linked below that can help

    Q
Can I use dominion 2L on my shrubs?
I live in s.florida and we are all infested with white fly. I do not have ficus , but do have a large variety of ornamentals and tropical plants. I think the directions on the label are confusing.
    A
You can use Dominion 2L to treat trees and shrubs for whitefly. Most people use a 5 gallon bucket or a large watering can to apply Dominion as a soil drench. You will need 0.1 to 0.2 fl. oz. (3 to 6 mL) of Dominion per foot of shrub height or 0.1 to 0.2 fl oz per inch of trunk diameter for trees. The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per foot of shrub height (or inch of trunk diameter for trees) but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per foot of height (or inch of trunk diameter for trees) as well. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and translocated throughout the tree or shrub. We also recommend using a product with an active ingredient that is different than the soil drench for a foliage application while you are waiting for the Dominion to translocate through the ficus. Talstar P is the most popular choice for foliage application on ficus for white fly.
