Product Overview

Drive XLR8 Herbicide is the latest technology in providing unsurpassed post-emergent crabgrass control. A proprietary, water-based quinclorac formulation, Drive XLR8 improves the control of crabgrass, torpedograss, kikuyugrass, several broadleaves (clover, speedwell) and numerous other troublesome weeds that you have relied on Drive 75 DF to control. When compared to Drive 75 DF, the new formulation in Drive XLR8 Crabgrass Killer Herbicide provides faster, more effective weed control, delivers quicker uptake by the plant, and is rain fast quicker (in less than an hour).

With Drive XLR8, it is recommended to use a methylated seed oil to apply the product.   Prime Source Duo Stick Select and Dyneamic surfactant are methylated seed oils and are recommended to apply with Drive XLR8.

Drive XLR8 herbicide replaces the older Drive 75 DF Herbicide.

For smaller jobs consider QuinKill Max Crabgrass and Weed Killer which is available in pints and quarts and contains the same active ingredient quinclorac.

For use in California: Biotypes of large and smooth crabgrass in California have shown varied response to Drive XLR8. If control failure occurs following a full or split application, DO NOT reapply Drive XLR8. Change to a herbicide with a different mode of action.

TIPS FOR USE:

Spray coverage should be uniform and complete. It is recommended to not mow two days before or after application. Irrigation may improve weed control, if soil moisture is not sufficient. over priced roundup

    By Ken on 09/05/2011

I learned the hard way, tried to spray this on crabgrass in a st. Augustine lawn and works like roundup, killed everything it touched. Please bring back asulox somebody...

    Expert ResponseExpert response:
This product specifically says to not apply to St. Augustine grass, which is why it killed it.  St. Augustine cannot handle a product like Drive XLR8.

    Excellent stuff

    By Dan on 08/24/2011

    Verified Purchase

I have for years been wrestling with various different varieties of late summer crab grasses in the lawns that I manage, even after high quality pre-emergent and several OTC post-emergent herbicide treatments. This summer with everything looking truly horrid with nasty crab grasses growing everywhere, I used the Southern Ag surfactant along with Drive XLR8 to absolutely knock the crap out of my crab grass problems. I applied the Drive XLR8 and the surfactant combination to the lawns prior to any heat stressing/stunting and well between mowings as specified. My results were outstanding and visible with yellowing in 36-48 hours and then obviously terminal yellow-tan in 96 hours. The Drive XLR8 and surfactant combination is a bit pricey, but the coverage is excellent and the combination actually works as advertised.

    Great stuff

    By Anonymous on 08/28/2013

In the past I had a lawn control company and have more crabgrass now than ever it seems like. I could have called and they would send someone out to kill everything but I don't like that so I let the lawn service go. I put a premium fertilizer on my lawn a few weeks ago and my Bermuda greened up nice and is very full. I mixed up 1.5 oz of Driver DLR8 along with 0.5 oz of Southern AD Surfactant per gallon of water and used my pump sprayer to spray a fine mist early in the morning with a heavy dew on the grass. About 12 hours later (as is normal this year in the south) the heavens opened up flooding my lawn. I just knew it was not going to work. WRONG! The very next day it looked like the crabgrass was turning yellow, the second day I know it was. Within 4 days the crabgrass was dead. It has been 5 days now and I cut my grass again last night. I can see some yellowing of the Bermuda where I sprayed but I can live with that. Apparently I missed a few spots of grab grass walking around the yard with my sprayer so I will hit it again in a week or two. The same day I sprayed my lawn I sprayed my son's lawn but I did his on dry grass in the sun maybe 4 hours before the rain came. His did not work as good as mine but it did work. I am going to hit his again in the morning dew the next time. I would highly recommend Drive DLR8 w/a surfactant (Southern AG worked great for me.) I have used herbicides before but never with a surfactant. But then again nothing as ever worked this good before either.

    amazing results

    By Roger on 09/14/2011

This crabgrass killer really works!! First I was skeptical, I had a serious crabgrass problem, with big mature crabgrass. I used scott's and Bayer's weed killer with crabgrass controll, they didn't work. I used this one in early september, all the crabgrass were dead in a few days, I just reseeded my lawn...

    Drive

    By John on 09/25/2011

    Verified Purchase

Easy to remember, a neighbor told me about it. The mixing instructions were easy enough to follow and one has to know what application he is making. The sprayer I am using mixed it automatically once I knew the tbsps/gallon to set on it. The crab grass simply started to disappear after a few days.

Q
Can I use a hose-end sprayer to apply Drive XLR8 Herbicide?

Q
Will Drive XLR8 harm mature native grasses bluestem and indiangrass?

How about seeding natives after application?

A

The Drive XLR8 Label does not specifically mention Big Bluestem grass or Indian grass on the label whether it be as a target pest or as a tolerant species to the product. From the links below from the USDA NRCS it states that those grasses are tolerant to most broadleaf herbicides and should not be harmed if product directions are followed and applied accurately. That being said, you can follow the link below to the USDA Service Center Locator to speak with your local conservationist in your region on what works bests in your area and what products they may recommend.

Q
Can I add Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer and Turflon Ester in same 15 gallon tank?
A

The most important factor when planning to tank mix various herbicides is referring to all manufacturer's product labels for tank mixing restrictions.  In this case, because Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer requires the use of an MSO Surfactant like Prime Source Duo Stick Select in order to be effective, it would not be recommended due to the fact that most Turflon Ester product labels advise not adding a surfactant for lawn treatments as this can cause damage to turf grass.

Q
How much Drive XLR8 for a 40 gallon tank and Super B oil?

How many acres would this cover?

A

In a 40 gallon tank you would add 64 oz of Drive XLR8 and 10 oz of methylated seed oil surfactant, and this should just about cover 1 acre. Keep in mind that it is most important to use the correct amount of product for the area you are treating, rather than an exact amount of water.

Q
2 applications with Drive XLR8, should I apply each at 1/2 rate?

The label says use no more than 64 oz per acre and that's equivalent to the broadcast rate of 1.45 oz/1000 sq feet. However it also says a sequential application may be needed to control annual grasses that are 2-4 tiller. Should you apply the first application at 1/2 rate then for crabgrass?

A

The single application maximum rate for Drive XLR8 Herbicide is 1.45 oz per 1000 sq ft, or 64 oz per Acre. The product label gives instructions for split applications depending on the type of annual grass you are treating.  Otherwise the full rate would be used for most applications.

Q
Can I apply Drive XLR8 and Gordons Trimec Classic Broadleaf Herbicide together?
A

Most herbicides such as Drive XLR8 and Trimec Classic can be mixed with other EPA-registered herbicides.  We recommend that you read and follow the label instructions to prepare a tank mix test to ensure that the two products mix well and there is no clumping or separating.

Q
How long after application of Drive XLR8 can I reseed with a Fescue seed mix?
A

Depending on the type of fescue you have, Drive XLR8 Herbicide can be used at the time of seeding.  If you are overseeding with fine fescue, it is recommended that you use Drive XLR8 at least 7 days before seeding or 28 days after emergence of the new seed. If you are overseeding with tall fescue, Drive XLR8 can be used at any time. We do recommend using an MSO surfactant with this product as well. Please check the label for complete application instructions.

Q
Can Drive XLR8 Herbicide be mixed with Momentum?

Can I mix this with lesco momentum for better control?

A
As long as both products do not contain the same active ingredient, and both have labels that allow tank mixing in general then you should be able to mix the Drive and Momentum together. Per the Drive label: The most restrictive labeling applies with any tank mix. To increase spectrum of control of broadleaf and other weeds, Drive XLR8 may be tank mixed with 2,4-D, Triclopyr, and other broadleaf herbicides. Make sure to do a tank mix test first for any clumping or discoloring before applying to the lawn.

Q
Can I mix Battleship III with Drive XLR8 to spray my yard all in one shot?
A

Before mixing Battleship III and Drive XLR8, a simple jar test is required to ensure compatibility of herbicides and/or additives, like DyneAmic that's recommended to be used with Drive XLR8. Refer to the respective product labels for specific use directions, precautions, and limitations before tank mixing and we recommend that you follow the label instructions of the product with the most restrictions. Be sure that both products are safe to use on the turf you have.
