Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer - Questions & Answers

Per the product label, Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer should not be applied to centipede turfgrass therefore should work to kill unwanted centipede in the Kentucky Bluegrass turfgrass.  

 

 Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is not recommended to be applied using hose end sprayer as it is difficult to regulate the amount of water coverage and to ensure adequate water volume is coming out to evenly and thoroughly distribute the recommended 1.45 fl oz per 1000 sq ft mix rate. 

Per the product label, use at least 20 gallons of water per acre or 0.5 gallons of water per 1000 sq ft at a low pressure setting of 20 to 40 psi to provide uniform spray distribution. A methylated seed oil surfactant is also recommended to be tank mixed with Drive XLR8 for best results.

In California many varieties of crabgrass are resistant to quinclorac, which is the main ingredient used to control it across the country. The active ingredient Quinclorac in Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is safe for fescue but resistance is possible. 

Q4 Plus which is quinclorac and sulfentrazone together for the crabgrass, or Tenacity which is a completely different active ingredient all together. Tenacity though works bests as spot treatments for post emergent control, and the manufacturer suggests only targeting young crabgrass with it as mature large clumps will take multiple applications or may not see complete control when at that growth stage. 

Make sure every spring you are using a pre emergent like Dimension 2EW or Pendulum 2G Herbicide to prevent the crabgrass seeds from germinating so you do not have to treat for it later in the growing season. Pre emergents should go down right at or just before soil temps reach 55 degrees consistently. 
 

To avoid any turf damage, Drive XLR8 should be applied when temperatures are between 65-85 degrees. It would be best to apply in the early morning or in the evening when temperatures are at their lowest so that the product has sufficient time to dry before temperatures get above this range. If temperatures are above 85 degrees, you should wait to apply the product when temperatures are lower. Please be sure to review the product label for more information and complete application instructions before use.
 

Yes, Drive XLR8 is pet friendly when applied as directed per the product label. Keep pets out of the areas while spraying and until the application has completely dried. 

Colonial Bentgrass and Seaside Bentgrass are listed as suseptible to applications of Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer while Creeping Bentgrass is listed as moderately tolerant to the herbicide. 

Refer to Table 1 and Table 2 on page 8 of the product label for addtional information. The addition of a Methylated Seed Oil Surfactant is needed to use with Drive XLR8 for best results.  

The best treatment to eliminate bentgrass in bermuda lawns would be to spot treat with a non-selective herbicide such as Roundup QuikPro and then reseed/resod after 2 weeks. 

Unfortunately there is nothing that is labeled to selectively kill dallas grass, and not your fescue.  So for the Dallas grass you would spot treat it with a glyphosate product, which would kill the Dallas grass and also a little bit of the surrounding fescue grass.Then re-seed with fescue in those areas where the surrounding fescue was killed.  For your crabgrass you can use Drive XLR8, which may also take care of the water grass.

Drive is labeled for many types of weeds. Bindweed, Crabgrass, Clover, Dandelion, Dollarweed, Foxtail, Kikuyugrass, Signalgrass, Speedwell, Torpedograss, and more. Please refer to the product label for the complete list.

You may fair better with using the Roundup or any other Glyphosate product like it if you plan to take it to bare ground to reseed anyways. If there are more weeds and weedy grasses like crabgrass than actual lawn that would ensure you got all of the problem plants. Whereas using the Drive will eliminate many problem weeds/grasses however may not eliminate all of the ones in your lawn if they aren't all on the product label.

To reapply, all depends on what region you are located in and what you are treating for. If you still see weeds coming up, we may recommend using Drive XLR8 Please review the product label to see if this product will treat your specific weeds and not harm your lawn.

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer contains Quinclorac 15.93%. Drive is not labeled to treat creeping charlie. Tenacity is labeled to control Ground Ivy "Creeping Charlie" as post emergent control. We highly recommend using a temporary turf colorant like Turf Mark Blue so that you can see where you spray with the Tenacity to avoid overlapping. Tenacity is a great product, but also a very strong product so too much overlapping or mixing the product too strong can cause temporary damage and whitening to your turf around the ground ivy. The color will come back in the lawn after 3-4 weeks but to avoid this potential problem it is best to use a colorant to make sure no overlap occurs. To get optimum results for post emergent control it is recommended you use a Non Ionic Surfactant in your mixture as well. Please make sure that you check the label to verify that it is safe for your type of turfgrass as you did not indicate the kind of lawn you will be applying the product to. We do not know the exact time of year you will start applying Drive XLR8 in Maryland. Weeds grow at different times in different regions and there is no way for us to know if the weeds have started growing in your area yet. According the Drive XLR8 product label you should start applying the product when the weeds are actively growing if you are using it as a broadcast spray. If you are using Drive XLR8 as a spot spray you should use tables 1, 2 and 3 on the product label and apply the product according to the turf species, rate and growth stages indicated in the tables. If you are not sure when the weeds start to actively grow in your region you can contact the master gardener at your local cooperative extension office for more information.

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer should not be applied to exposed feeder roots of trees or ornamentals or within the dripline of trees and ornamental species. Please refer to the product label for complete mixing and application instructions prior to applying the product.

Drive XLR8 is not labeled to treat for Sandburs. The best method of treatment for Sandburs is with a pre-emergent before the Sandburs germinate. A good option for a pre-emergent would be Surflan AS Herbicide but please refer to the product label to be sure it's safe for the type of grass you have. You can check Ferti-Lome Weed Out with Crabgrass Killer, it is labeled for Goathead which is another name for Sandbur, please refer to the product label to be sure it's safe for the type of grass you have.

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is designed to treat crabgrass and other listed weeds, primarily in approved turf areas. The product label does not list mazus ground cover as a tolerant species of plant. However, since this product does kill a variety of broadleaf weeds, it may injure your groundcover. You may want to contact a master gardener in your area through your Cooperative Extension Service if you are having trouble finding an herbicide that will meet your needs.

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is not specifically labeled for creeping charlie. We do carry products that are effective for eradication. Please check out Ferti-Lome Weed Out with Crabgrass Killer. It is labeled for established cool and warm season lawns. Please refer to the product label for specific mixing and application instructions for your turfgrass.

No, Drive XLR8 Herbicide is not labeled for fountain grass. We would recommend either manually removing the invasive grass or using a glyphosate product such as Roundup QuikPro. 

You would dilute approx. Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer per 14 gallons water. You would add into that approx. 8 tsp. of surfactant.
