    Q
Why are the ants taking the Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait away from the bed instead of inside the bed?
After I applied Extinguish Plus around the fire ant beds and broadcasted today (11/5/23), I noticed not one ant taking the bait inside their ant bed, but several were taking the bait away from the bed, dumping them somewhere and returning to take more away. What's going on?
    A

It is hard to say exactly what may be happening in this instance. However, usually when we see customers experience this it is because either the ants are not foraging for food right now, so they are moving the Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait away from the colony and out of their way; or, they could find the bait suspicious for some reason and don't trust it as a food source right now and are removing it from the colony for that reason. When baiting for fire ants with this product, you want to follow the instructions and test for actively foraging ants before applying the bait so you don't waste your applications.

Per the Product Label: Apply when ants are active and foraging (when soil temperature is greater than 60.

    Q
Can you use Extinguish Plus where you have free-ranging chickens? If not, how long should we keep them cooped?
I have many mounds in gardens, lawns, etc, but could keep my chickens cooped for a while if needed.
    A

You will need to use the Extinguish Bait in only areas that are inaccessible to the chickens. For more information on using Extinguish near chickens, we recommend contacting the manufacturer Zoecon at 800-877-6374. The manufacturer may have baiting suggestions for your situation.

    Q
    What spreader do you recommend?
I have a 2-acre yard what spreader do you recommend?
    A

You can apply the Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait either by treating the individual mounds separately with 2 to 5 tablespoons per mound, or you can broadcast the treatment by using a handheld spreader applying 3 ounces per 5000 square feet.

It is hard to find a spreader with a setting this low therefore sprinkling the 3 oz per 5000 sq ft is typically done by hand. As long as you can calibrate the spreader you choose to the proper usage rate, any spreader will work.

    Q
Is Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait going to kill giant red ants under my chicken cages without harming my horses if they were to ingest the bait in the area?
I have cats, a dog and a horse that are free roaming in the same area as my chicken cages and I have caught my horse eating the feed that falls through to the ground and on top of the ant mound. Is this product going to kill those giant ants and yet NOT be harmful to my horse if she gets into the treated area and ingests some of it afterwards?
    A

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait can be used on pasture land and there are no grazing restrictions for companion animals. Though slower in action, control is complete without the concern of rebounding or movement of the colony to another location. Reduction in colony size can be seen beginning at 3 weeks with colony elimination within 8 to 10 weeks.

A broadcast treatment across the entire area would be best so that the fire ants do not just move their mounds to other areas. If you do an individual mound treatment, be sure to treat at least three feet out as well.

You will use 1.5-2 lbs. per acre for a broadcast application and 2-5 tablespoons for individual mounds. While spring and fall are the best time to apply the bait, you may apply as needed, when ants are active and foraging (usually early morning or late afternoon with soil temperatures above 60 degrees.

Please review the product label for more information.

Is Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait harmful to chickens?
I've read that this will be safe for dogs, however I'm concerned about the chickens being able to pick up the granules? Any advice on if it's safe for them and how long after application they'd need to stay off it?

    Q
Will Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait work on killing my grub infestation on my 10 acre horse pasture?
    A

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait should only be applied as directed for the control of controls imported and Native Fire Ants and other ants, such as Harvester Ants, Big-headed Ants, and Argentine Ants. It is not labeled or effective for the treatment of grubs. If you know you have Japanese Beetle Grubs, then a great alternative is Milky Spore Powder, which is an all-natural bacteria that spreads through grubs and lasts for 10+ years once established. If you have another species of grubs, we recommend that you consult with your local cooperative extension office for alternate options in grazing areas.
