    Q
How long after using Fertilome Brush Killer can I plant in that area?
    A

According to the manufacturer if you used Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer as directed on the product label, and you did not get any product on the soil, you can replant right away. Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer does persist in the soil so if you did treat the soil the manufacturer recommends that you wait 6-8 months before you replant anything in the area.

    Q
Will Ferti-lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer hurt my pine trees that are close by?
I cut 6 popular trees down and want to applyFerti-lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer to the stumps. I will drill 6-12 in deep holes. Will mix Fertilome with 3 gallons of diesel fuel and pour into holes. Will it kill my pines close by?
    A

As long as the desirable roots on the pine trees are not contacted by the Ferti-lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer, it would not harm them.  The active ingredient does not leach into the soil so it should only kill the stumps you treat.

  • Asked by G from Perry, Fl

    Q
What product and method do you suggest for killing (old growth) Palmetto?
I live in central Florida and have several large areas of Palmetto I want to eliminate. I've sprayed them numerous times with roundup and all it does is spot the leaves. I have one large clump that I cut back and burned but now have the "stumps" 3 to 4 feet long and 8 to 10 inches in diameter growing horizontally along the ground. I drilled holes in the stumps and poured roundup full strength into them. There is no new growth from the stumps but small sprouts are coming up around them. How can I get rid of these tenacious Devils? I'm 70 years old and unable to dig the stumps so I hope that once they are dead they will rot away enough to burn them. Any help or suggestions will be welcome.
    A

Typically something that is more of a tree rather than a grass/weed requires a more specific chemical than Roundup. You need to use something like Fertilome Brush & Stump Killer or Crossbow and apply it undiluted to the freshly cut stumps/roots and then use it at either full strength or the highest dilution on any shoots that are coming up around the main stump. This will penetrate further into the root system to kill it out. You may have to cut back new shoots from time to time in the beginning as the Crossbow and Stump Killer products will only kill what has already emerged from the ground, not prevent the new seedlings still below the surface from sprouting up. Over time the stump and root system should die out and eventually break down in the soil.

    Q
How is the soil affected around the treated plant after using Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer?
Will other plants grow in the soi?l
    A

Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer will not affect nearby plants or move through the soil if it is applied directly to cut stumps. If you are applying the product as a spray, then you should be careful to avoid spray or over-spray onto desirable ornamental plants such as shrubs or trees, or their root systems.

  • Asked by Allan from Paola Kansas

    Q
Does the Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer work in the fall when trees are dormant?
    A

Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer can be used at any time unless the temperatures are freezing. If the product is used as intended, the tree should be cut down and applied to the stump to prevent sprouting with a paint brush or sprayer to completely cover the freshly cut surface. Do not reuse the paint brush. Wrap in several layers of newspaper and discard in the trash.

    Q
How do I kill unwanted trees or how can I treat the stump from re-sprouting?
If I cut down certain species of trees and shrubs how can I prevent them from sprouting from the stump?
    A
If you want to selectively kill something then you would want to drill holes into the stump or use the cut stump method.  This means you cut the stump to expose fresh pulp and immediately treat.  You may want to try a brush and stump killer product like Fertilome Brush and Stump Killer.

    Q
Is there a product that will kill wild violets but not harm iris?
    Violets taking over iris bed.
    A

We are not aware of a product that would kill violets that would not harm irises if sprayed.  We would just recommend care when spraying around desirables or pulling out the violet by hand. Something like Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer could be an option for spot spraying

  • Asked by Alvin from Seffner

    Q
Will Ferti-lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer kill my lawn?
    A

Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer is designed to target woody brush, shrubs, trees and broadleaf weeds. It is not chemically designed to target or harm grasses. That being said, any heavy amount of any herbicide that is used in a concentrated area will always have the potential for harming non target plants directly within the vicinity of the treatment area depending on how and where it is used. If there is grass under the plant you wish to kill, you can try making small cuts into the plant and applying the product at the highest concentration or undiluted with a paint brush on the freshly cut surface. This will reduce the risk of it getting on any other desireable vegetation nearby.

    Q
Will stump killer kill the flowering cherry trees that have send shoots and roots against my foundation?
I have two flowering cherry trees on my parking strip that have send shoots and roots under the sidewalk and now against my house's foundation. Will Stump Killer kill those trees or just the shoots and sprouts around my house's foundation?
    A

Whether the Stump Killer kills the shoots or the trees or both would depend on how its applied and how close they are to each other. If you are not wanting to kill the cherry trees you will want to keep the stump killer outside the dripline of the trees. If you have shoots coming up near the trees root zone you can carefully snip the top of the shoot to expose a raw cut and then paint on or very carefully apply a directed spot spray to the shoot being sure to not get it into the soil if possible. If the shoots are far away from the trees and are not next to any other desireable vegetation then you could use it to treat those areas without issue.

    Q
Can Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer be used to kill wild bamboo?
    A

Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer is not labeled to control bamboo, so it would not be recommended.   You can use Round Up QuickPro at the highest listed usage rate to help eliminate bamboo. You will be required to cut the bamboo down to a short stump and then apply the Round Up QuickPro. It can take several applications to achieve the desired results.  We also recommend that you contact your local cooperative extension office and speak to the master gardener on staff for further advice. Bamboo can be VERY difficult to eliminate, but the master gardener may have some helpful tips for you.

    Q
How to kill a willow tree that is wrecking my septic system.
    A
The only way to kill a tree is by cutting the tree down and applying a stump killer such as Fertilome Brush Killer and Stumper Killer to the newly cut stump within a few minutes after cutting. You would still need to do your part to remove the stump but the Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer will prevent resprouting.

    Q
I have a below ground level stump freshly ground. How soon can I bury it after applying Fertilome stump killer?
Also is drilling holes in stump and adding stump killer to holes as effective then burying stump?
    A

Ferti-lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer is generally used right after cutting to prevent stumps from resprouting. You could potentially cover the stump as soon as the herbicide application is dry. This, however, is not a product that would contribute to faster decay of the stump. If you want to drill holes and increase the speed of decay, then we recommend using Hi-Yield Stump Remover instead.

    Q
Killing willow stumps on pond dam with Ferti-lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer
Can this be used to kill willow stumps on pond dam and not contaminate the water? Massive root system goes out in water remain after cutting trees in the fall. Stumps are less than 4 inches in diameter.
    A

Killing stumps/trees which have roots that run into water areas can be tricky. Most stump killer products do not address aquatic life safety from indirect applications that could impact them, so we couldn't say for certain if applying just to the fresh cut of the stump, if the Fertilome Brush and Stump Killer would have a negative impact. You can always contact the manufacturer directly to see if they have any specific use instructions they would suggest for that application. You can reach VPG at 888-583-5296, An alternative option to try would be using aquatic plant killing products like Roundup Aquatic or Hi Yield 2,4D which may take multiple treatments, but are safe for aquatic life whether the product gets into the water directly or indirectly.
