    Q
Frequency of Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench application for emerald ash borer? Once or twice a year?

    A

Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench label states one application protects for 12 months. We apologize for any confusion.

  • Asked by Tom from Narragansett Ri
    06/11/2013
    Q
I have a hackberry tree which has been infested with NippleGall Psylids each year for several years.
The infestation causes premature leaf drop through most of the summer months. Since the tree is rather large I would assume that a systemic insecticide is the best approach. Do you believe that the Systemic Insect Drench would help to resolve the problem. I am afraid it might be too late to save the foiliage this year since the galls are already begining to appear on some of the leaves. Any assistace you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks
    A
A systemic is definitely what you would need as foliar sprays only help when they are in certain stages on the hackberry tree. The sytemic product would normally take a couple of weeks to translocate all the way through the tree so a foliar spray may help in the mean time until the product works its way through the center. The Fertilome Systemic Drench would be a great option and will typically last for a full year in the tree. We highly suggest using it again before symptoms start to appear to prevent your trees damage the next year.

  • Asked by Ed from Fort Worth, Tx

    Q
Will Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench control Bagworms?
I have a Weeping Bald Cypress that is covered in Bagworms. Will the systemic take care of them when they hatch?
    A

No, Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench is not labeled for bagworms.

It is important to start control methods before a major infestation occurs. Once the bagworms have matured and have formed the "bag" most chemical control methods will no longer work.

You can manually control bagworms by simply plucking them off of the infested trees and dropping them into a bucket of soapy water or squishing them.  This control method is most useful during fall, winter and early spring, before the eggs inside the bag have hatched.

Chemical control may be achieved when the larvae are small and just emerging from the over-wintering bag.  Use a concentrated liquid insecticide such as OrtheneTalstar or Tempo. Foliage should be thoroughly wetted with the insecticide spray in order to achieve thorough coverage.  When doing an insecticide treatment, timing is key. To find out the correct time of year to treat for bagworms in your region contact you local Cooperative Extension office. These offices can prove to be invaluable when treating for insect pests.

  • Asked by Stu from Phoenix, Az

    Q
Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench for borers in Goldwater Pines?
My pine trees have rings ion the bark where borers have penetrated. A big problem here in the Southwest. Will this product kill the borers? How about the Fertilome Borer, Bagworm etc product?
    A

Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench will not help prevent pine borers. Infected trees should be cut down (before the newly hatched beetles fly out of the trees in the spring/summer) and the wood burned or chipped, while other still healthy trees should be sprayed annually to protect them. Because of the natural boring behavior of the beetle they are protected from topically applied insecticides and systemic insecticides (those injected into the tree or applied as a root drench) have proven ineffective for pine beetle infestations. Healthy trees can be protected before the beetles attack by topically spraying them with a product called Permethrin SFR. The tree should be sprayed from the ground to 15 ft up the trunk to prevent future infestations.

  • Asked by Fred
    10/31/2016
    Q
Will Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench control or eliminate an Asian ambrosia beetle infestation on my Crepe Myrtles?
Also, will this systemic aid in the management of Powdery Mildew and Sooty Mold on these trees as well?
    A

Unfortunately, neither Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench nor any other systemic insecticides will prevent or kill infestations of boring beetles such as the Asian ambrosia beetle. Trees can be sprayed preventatively with an insecticide such as Talstar P. Trees that are already infested can sometimes be trimmed of infested branches, but usually infested trees will need to be destroyed. Fertilome Systemic Drench is just an insecticide; it will not prevent or treat any fungus. Keep in mind that there is no known fungicide to treat the disease problems caused by the Asian ambrosia beetles. Eagle 20EW is an excellent fungicide to treat powdery mildew on crepe myrtles.

    Q
Will Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench repel/kill Japanese Beetles?
Last year my newly planted trees were infested with Japanese beetles.
    A

Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench will not repel anything, it will only kill those insects that ingest the product from a treated tree/shrub.  It should be applied before the insects become an issue following the instructions on the product label as it needs times to be translocated throughout.

  • Asked by Gm from Hayward, Wi
    03/29/2017
    Q
How do I apply Fertilome Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench to apple trees?
What should the weather conditions be at time of application? When and how often should I apply it to the trees and at what state of apple tree growth- as in budding or before budding?
    A

You will apply Fertilome Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench on a clear dry day where no rain is expected for at least 6 hours and the ground is not frozen.  You will only need to apply the product once a year.  The product label does not list any restrictions on timing of application for apple tree budding so you can use it at any time the tree is actively growing and it will pull the product up through the tree to treat even new growth and protect it. Make sure you use a sufficient water volume when treating to evenly disperse it into the entire root zone,  and use 1 oz per inch of distance around the trunk at chest height.
