You didn't specify the exact product you were referring to but we believe you mean the Fertilome Tree & Shrub Insect Drench.  The product label does not list individual plant rates but states that for white flies you will use 1 oz of product per inch of distance around trunk diluted in one gallon of water. • Asked by Larry from Rifle, Co

    Q
Can Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench be applied as a foliar spray?
I spoke with a local owner of an aspen tree nursery. He sprays this product on his young aspen trees 3 times per year when the twiggal fly is active.
    A
Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench is only labeled to be used a soil drench around the base of the tree and not as a foliar spray.  A soil drench will actually provide a longer residual as it will soak into the plants inner system and last for typically an entire growing season up to 1 year. Foliar application are only somewhat systemic with products labeled to do so but would need to be reapplied after the weather wears away at it on the surface.

  • Asked by Lori from Littleton

    Q
Will the aphid eggs and larvae fall from the tree after treating with Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench?
We followed the directions early in the spring. Now we are seeing aphids fall from the tree. Is this typical? How long will this go on?
    A

Yes, it is common to see dead or dying insects after treating with a systemic product such as Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench. You would not see something as small as eggs falling from the tree, but you may see insects that die after feeding on treated plants. You may see dying insects for several weeks, depending on the size the population was before treatment.

  • Asked by Neil from Cave Creek, Az
    08/14/2015
    Q
Is Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench effective against borer beetles, in particular the palo verde borer beetle?
    A

Unfortunately there is no easy solution when it comes to boring beetles. Infected trees should be cut down (before the newly hatched beetles fly out of the trees in the spring/summer) and the wood burned or chipped, while other still healthy trees should be sprayed annually to protect them. Because of the natural boring behavior of the beetle they are protected from topically applied insecticides and systemic insecticides (those injected into the tree or applied as a root drench such as Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench) have proven ineffective for beetle infestations. Healthy trees can be protected before the beetles attack by topically spraying them with a synthetic pyrethroid like Permethrin SFR. The tree should be sprayed from the ground to 15 ft up the trunk to prevent future infestations. You should contact your local cooperative extension office to find out the best time to start spraying in your region.

  • Asked by Leann from Salida, Colorado

    Q
Wil Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench kill ponderosa pine spider mites?
If this is effective on pine spider mites, what is the best time to treat the tree? I've heard to get it done in March, do you agree?
    A

No, Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench is not labeled for spider mites.  There are no systemic products that are currently on the market for spider mites.

We normally recommend using Avid Miticide. This can be applied every seven days for 2-3 weeks and then monthly for maintenance directly to the plant you are treating.

    Q
Is there another product for drench application for a linden tree? What is this product not safe for linden trees?
    A

Per the Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench : "Do not apply this product, by any application method, to linden, basswood or other Tilia species." Due to the sensitive nature of Linden trees, we recommend speaking with the master gardener at your local cooperative extension office to determine what products can safely be applied.

  • Asked by Rose from Texas
    09/04/2021
    Q
Can Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench be applied in September when outside temperatures are still extremely hot?
I used a foliage spray on crape myrtle because the aphids are terrible. It helped tremendously but there are still aphids on the leaves. I want to apply this now to help with prevention but it states to do it in fall. Should I just keep blasting my crape myrtle leaves with water and insecticide to keep aphids away until then or can I go ahead and apply this now to the crape myrtle and other trees and shrubs?
    A

Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench does not list any temperature restrictions on the product label, and can be applied anytime except when the ground is saturated or frozen.

For best results, Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench works best as a preventative treatment before insect activity is present by soil drench between early spring through early fall. Systemic insecticides can take weeks to months to translocate throughout the tree from the root zone depending on the size and age of the tree.

We recommend doing a monthly application with a residual insecticide labeled for aphids such as Talstar P as a foliar spray every 30 days. This will treat active insects such as whiteflies, aphids, spider mites, clover mites, mosquitoes, etc
