Learning how to pick the best fertilizer for your palm trees and how to apply it correctly can help these beautiful trees live long and healthy lives.
Hi this is Kat with DoMyOwn.com.
Today, I'll be talking about how to properly fertilize your palm trees.Fertilizing your palm trees to look greener/brighter and keeps them healthy overall so you don't have to spend time and money fixing issues. A palm that has been cared for and fertilized properly will be more likely to survive bad weather conditions.
Timing of fertilization depends on soil and where you are located. For example in some climates you'll do twice per year – once in March and again in October.
You have options: liquid, granule, or spike fertilizers for palm trees. For liquid fertilizers, some you can apply to the foliage and some to the soil. Just depends on the product. Soil application is spraying the base and then go out to the drip-line for most products. Foliar is coating all foliage. Granules are spread around the trees. If you are only treating a few, you'd normally use a scoop and spread recommended amount. Now for fertilizer spikes.
Your product label will tell you how far from the palm tree to put them and recommended application instructions. Rates and mode of application will depend on the specific product. Some are slow-release fertilizers, meaning they'd last a bit longer than others. Normally, spikes last longer.
You will see magnesium, iron, sulfur, and manganese micronutrients on a lot of labels and three parts Nitrogen sources, Phosphorus, and Potassium. You should perform a soil test to determine the nutrients your palm tree is lacking and the proper ratio or product to use for it.
The size of your palm tree will tell you how much fertilizer to use. A tall growing palm tree may require more than a low-growing variety.
What are some other things to keep in mind? Never use fertilizer on the trunk, will be a waste of product because it's a woody area and it won't do much there. Scatter granules and don't put them all in one place And again, label is law.
