    Q
What is the best herbicide for Silverleaf Nightshade in lawns?
It is flowering now and I understand that is the best time to treat. I need to know what to treat it with, how to mix and with what, and application. I bought a backpack sprayer which may be overkill. As the summer progresses the infestation gets worse especially when the rainy season hits here in July and August. I am also concerned because I have 4 fruit trees in the backyard and the front I have an Arizona Ash which is away and up from where the nightshade is. Thanks for your help.
    A

Most master gardeners agree that the best treatment for Silverleaf Nightshade in residential lawns is to use a non-selective glyphosate product, such as KillzAll Weed and Grass Killer. KillzAll will kill just about any plant it is sprayed on so we would recommend performing spot treatments in your lawn and then reseed. You would mix 2.5 oz. per gallon of water (1 gallon treats approx. 300 sq. ft.) Repeat applications may be necessary for complete control.

    Q
How should I apply Killzall Weed and Grass Killer - 41% Glyphosate to old, large poison ivy vines growing up trees with leaves in the tree's canopy?
I see where you told Brad from Los Lunas, New Mexico to be sure that you do not spray the bark directly and avoid any exposed roots on trees. I have old, large poison ivy vines growing up trees. Do you have any recommendations? All I can think of is a paintbrush to 'paint' the poison ivy vine, but I don't want to risk damaging trees. Most of the foliage is up in the tree's canopy so I don't have a chance of applying Killzall to them. Will 'painting' the vine kill the poison ivy?
    A

When using Killzall Weed and Grass Killer, it is not recommended that you use the product on a desirable plant or tree. You can spot treat the ivy in areas where they are, but the safest way will be to cut the ivy that is on the tree and spray the areas where ivy is elsewhere.

  • Asked by Katie from Round Lake, Il
    05/02/2015
    Q
How safe is Killzall Weed and Grass Killer for the garden?
If I spray it, will it go to the root to kill it? Will it deep intot the soil and spread to other plants even if I don't spray those plants directly? Also how far from water life can you spray this? We have a pond further behind our house, but it is a good 30 feet or so from the edge of the garden I think.
    A
Killzall Weed and Grass Killer is a non-selective post-emergent weed killer that will kill any weeds or grasses sprayed directly. It will not penetrate deep into the soil and does not have any residual soil activity. It will be safe as long as you are careful to avoid spraying the desirable plants. It should NOT be applied where runoff could occur or around any acquatic life or bodies of water.  However, we do carry a glyphosate product that is made specifically for use around bodies of water.  It is called Rodeo and you should use a surfactant with it for better results.  You would wait 48 hours after application before using the water. It is recommended that you wait 1-2 weeks before replanting in an area that has been treated with a glyphosate product such as Killzall Weed and Grass Killer.
