    Q
Would Merit 0.5 G be a good option to treat mole crickets?
    A

Yes, Merit 0.5 Insecticide Granules are labeled for lawn pests such as Mole Crickets. Since Merit Insecticide Granules is a systemic insecticide that translocates through the plant, it is best applied before Spring/Summer egg hatch, before we see adults and/or damage from the target pest, in this case before we see adult mole crickets. The granules do need to be activated with irrigation or rainfall of about 0.5 inches. For the most exact recommendation as to when to apply the product, we recommend contacting your local Cooperative Extension office.

Will Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules kill squash vine borers?
    A

Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules is not specifcally labeled for squash vine borers. We would recommend using Hi-Yield Indoor/Outdoor Broad Use Insecticide. It is labeled for various insects, including squash bugs and is safe for use on the listed edibles.

    Q
How much Merit 0.5 G granules do I apply per rose bush
    A

The application rate of any insecticide is going to depend on the insect you are targeting.  With roses being sensitive to certain active ingredients and application methods, we highly recommend speaking with the manufacturer to determine the specific application rate of Merit Granules to treat your roses. You can reach Bayer at 800-331-2867.

Here are two options for alternative products that contain Imidacloprid (same active as Merit) Both are applied around the root zone and are used for basically the same treatments.

    Bonide Systemic

    Fertilome Tree and Shrub

Can I use Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules around daylily clumps to control thrips?

    Q
    Will Merit kill earthworms?
I'm trying to find a curative that will kill active grubs. Will Merit harm the earthworms in my turf? I'd like to avoid that if possible.
    A

Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules is not labeled for earthworms. With that said, while it is not likely to harm most earthworms because of the mucus coat and the depths the worms reside in, it is possible to kill some earthworms.

    Q
What setting do I use on a Scotts
    A

Unfortunately we do not have the spreader settings for that specific combo and the manufacturer does not list that spreader on their bag. Due to the thousands of granules on the market and just as many different types of spreaders, you will want to calibrate your spreader to the product you are using and its application rates.

Please take a moment to view our How to Calibrate your Spreader Video for more information.

    Q
Is Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules safe to use around honey bee hives?
    A

The active ingredient Imidacloprid in Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules can be toxic to bees that come into contact directly with the treated area. We do not recommend applying Merit or any other insecticides while pollinators are present or directly onto flowering plants where pollinators are likely to forage.

    Q
If I applied Merit to lawn and husband cuts the grass right after that, is it ok to re-apply right away?
    A

Since Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules are a systemic product, then it should have already been watered in before the lawn was mowed. So as long as the product was watered in as directed and the area had time to dry, then you do not need to reapply the Merit. Keep in mind that there is an annual maximum application rate of 80 lbs of Merit G per acre per year, according to the product label.

    Q
How much Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules do I apply around each established daylily clump to prevent thrips?
I used it last year satisfactorily but can't find my notes as to how much. I bought it to prevent thrips.
    A

Merit Granules are not labeled to kill thrips therefore we cannot provide rates for that insect. The product label states for landscape ornamentals to apply 1.4 to 1.8 lb per 1000 sq ft.

A product that is specifically labeled for thrips would be Imidacloprid 2F T/I Select. View the product label here for application rates and more information.

  • Asked by Jane from Waltham, Ma
    07/12/2022
    Q
If Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules is applied to turfgrass areas next to a vegetable bed, are the vegetable plants safe?
The company that takes care of our lawn just put down Merit grub control with fertilizer (3.5 lbs/1000 sf). It's 90° here with a strong breeze up to 20 mph and the note they left in my door says 'stay off area for 24 hours; water in product for best results'. I have herbs and some vegetables growing in a border next to grass, which was presumably treated -- just inches away. With the wind, I am concerned about whether the wind may have spread Merit to these plants, making them unsafe to eat. I've watered in the grass areas around the vegetables. Will the vegetable be safe to eat?
    A

It is recommended that applications of Merit 0.5 G Insecticide Granules should stay well outside the dripline of edible plants or atleast 3ft to 6ft away from any edibles for extra precaution. If you are concerned some of the plants may have absorbed the granules, it would recommended to discard those edibles for this season.
