  • Asked by Brien from Oregon
    05/06/2019
    Q
Is it safe to apply Monterey Fruit Tree & Vegetable Systemic Soil Drench near wells?
I read that it can easily permeate soil especially sandy soil and has a long half life of 6 months. If my well is 70 feet deep is there any danger of the active agent imidicloprid eventually seeping down into the water table the well draw from? My fruit trees are only about 25 feet from the well.
    A

Monterey Fruit Tree & Vegetable Systemic Soil Drench may be applied within 5 feet of a well. Imidacloprid permeates through a plant when applied as a soil drench treatment.

    Q
Can I use Monterey Fruit Tree & Vegetable Systemic Soil Drench on my Coconut Palms to get rid of the coconut Rhino Beetle?
    A

Monterey Fruit Tree & Vegetable Systemic Soil Drench is not labeled for Coconut Palms or for rhino beetles. Unfortunately, we do not carry insecticides or products labeld for rhino beetles as the most effective treatment to controlling them by eliminating the places where they breed and by manually destroying adults and immatures.

According to this article by the American Samoa Community College Community & Natural Resources Cooperative Research & Extension Office, the most effective treatmen is by managing the coconut rhinoceros beetle. This involves removing or destroying organic material that supports larval development such as decaying logs and stumps, removing dead palms, and removing piles of leaves and grass.

We would recommend contacting your local County Cooperative Extension Office for any information they have on successful treatments for this pest in your area.
