  • Asked by Martha from Lewisville, Nc

    Q
Can I use Monterey Spurge Power to kill wild violets in mondo grass?
    A

Monterey Spurge Power is not labeled to be used on groundovers so we cannot recommend it.  If you have mondo grass, then you can use Image Kills Nutsedge for listed broadleaf and grassy weeds.  That is about the only option we have for broadleaf weeds in groundcovers.

  • Asked by Debra from Mattoon, Illinois
    04/22/2021
    Q
Is it recommended to wear face coverings while spraying Monterey Spurge Power?
    A

The Monterey Spurge Power only states that the following PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required when applying it to the lawn:

    • Long-sleeved shirt and long pants;
    • Socks and shoes;
    • Chemical-resistant gloves.

Should you choose to wear a mask for extra protection against drift or blow back of the chemical in wind, you are certainly welcome to do so and a basic KN95 or painters mask is more than sufficient.

Please review the product label for more information.

  • Asked by Eric from Ca
    03/19/2017
    Q
Will Monterey Spurge Power harm or kill myoporum davis ground cover?
I have 2 year old myoporum davis ground cover that has a few weeds inside.
    A

Monterey Spurge Power should not be used on desirable groundcover or other ornamentals since it will likely cause damage to these plants. If you have grassy weeds in the myoporum, then you could use Fertilome Over The Top II Grass Killer to control the grassy weeds. If it is a large area, then you could also use a pre-emergent around the established ground cover, such as Snapshot.

  • Asked by Robin from Pulaski, Ny

    Q
Is Monterey Spurge Power the right product to kill creeping charlie without killing the grass?
We live in upstate NY. Have tried using round up weed killer for lawns and weed be gone with no success. This crazy weed just keeps spreading.
    A

Yes, Monterey Spurge Power is labeled for creeping charlie in both warm and cool season grasses. You would use it at a rate of 1 - 1.25 fl oz per 2 - 5 gallons of water per 1000 sq ft. Local conditions may affect the use of this chemical as shown on the product label. We recommend you consult State Experimental Station or Extension Service weed specialist for specific recommendations for local weed problems and for information on possible lower dosages.

    Q
What's the application rate for Spurge Power per gallon of water? How soon can I use this after reseeding?

    A

  • Asked by Frank from Jacksonville, Fl
    06/22/2019
    Q
Is Monterey Spurge Power good for spurge control in St Augustine grass?
I see Spurge Power works as a post-emergent treatment but understand it will injure St Augustine grass. I also see other products but would like your recommendation. I'm in northeast Florida and temps are in the upper 89s to low 90s right now. Thank you.
    A

Spurge Power is labeled to be used on St. Augustine grass. Per the product label, they do not recommend broadcasting this product when air temperatures are over 80 degrees F. They recommend only spot treating when temperatures are over 80 degrees F. If temperatures exceed the recommended temperature range, do not apply.

Can Monterey Spurge Power be used on Tiff South Florida St. Augustine turfgrass to treat creeping beggarweed that has taken over my lawn?

  • Asked by Tracy from Grants Pass Oregon
    08/29/2021
    Q
I sprayed wild violets. the violets didn't react at all! It's been 4 weeks
I did spot style spraying using a gallon of water and mixing as indicated on label. Seemed to work on a creeping Charlie-like plant. But the violets are still going strong and it has been 4 weeks since I sprayed.
    A
Monterey Spurge Power is labeled to target wild violets, and should be applied at a rate 1.0 to 1.25 fl. oz. in 2 gallons to 5 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft..  You may want to consider reapplying the product to your wild violets, keeping in mind not apply more than 1.47 fl. oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. per year, or more than 2 applications per year (at a rate of 0.73 fl. oz. per 1,000 sq. ft.) with a minimum retreatment interval of 21 days.

  • Asked by John from Sierra Vista Az
    09/07/2021
    Q
Will Monterey Spurge Power kill sandbur and also prevent new seeds from germinating?
    A

Monterey Spurge Power is not labeled for sandbur nor will it prevent new weeds from germination from seed.

For Warm Season lawns, a post emergent such as Image Kills Nutsedge or Celsius WG can be used when the weeds are actively growing.

For Cool Season lawns, we would recommend Acclaim Extra Herbicide along with a Non Ionic Surfactant for sandbur when it is actively growing.

We recommend using a pre-emergent for field sandbur in the fall, such as Pendulum 2G or Dimension 2EW:Granule

  • Asked by Chris from Wichita
    09/11/2021
    Q
Will Monterey Spurge Power kill toothed spurge?
The label only states spurge. There are several varieties of spurge. I'm particularly interested in if this will kill toothed spurge as a 3 way killer, such as trimec classic, won't touch it. It will kill the common spotted or prostrate spurge. Will the higher concentration of the two chemicals, that is also in trimec with a lower percentage than spurge power, kill toothed spurge?
    A

Unfortunately, there are few options for post emergent control of Toothed Spurge and even using a non selective such as glyphosate at the highest rates have shown to be ineffective. The only product we can recommend would be Dismiss South Herbicide as it lists annual spurge (toothed spurge) as well as the other two common varieties, prostrate and spotted spurge. Repeat applications may be required and full control is not guaranteed.

One of the most common ways to deal with this weed in your gardens is to mulch the infested area, which prevents light from reaching their seedlings and seeds, depriving them of food before they can make it for themselves. Applying mulch that is 3 to 4 inches deep is typically affective.

Contact your Master Gardener with the Cooperative Extension Office for recommendations shown to be effective for this weed in your region.
