  • Asked by D. from Anderson, Indiana

    Q
Can Permethrin SFR be used as a soil drench to kill ash borers? If so, what is the mixture ratio?
    A
Permethrin SFR would not be a recommended product as a soil drench for Ash Borers as it is not a systemic and will only kill the insects that contact the treated soil.  Dominion 2L is labeled to use on trees to help protect against boring beetles. Treatments should begin in May or June and should be done every year to protect trees from the Emerald Ash Borers. Most people use a 5 gallon bucket or a large watering can to apply Dominion as a soil drench. You will need 0.1 to 0.2 fl. oz. (3 to 6 mL) of Dominion 2L per inch of trunk diameter for trees. It is recommended that you use the higher rate for boring beetles. The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per inch of trunk diameter for trees but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter for trees. Denser soils such as clay do not accept water as readily, so the lower volume of water is suggested.  Since sandy soils can accept more water, using the higher volume of water is preferred. After the soil drench has been applied you should water it in with at east 1/2 inch of water. Note: Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and trans-located throughout the tree or shrub. Root/soil drenches offer the advantage of requiring no special equipment to apply (other than a bucket or watering can). However, surface layers of organic matter, such as mulch or leaf litter, can bind the insecticide and reduce uptake. Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 10-14 days after applications to encourage uptake.

    Q
Even though it doesn't say it kills bedbugs why is it that most insecticides have Permethin as the ingredient?
    A
None of the insecticide concentrates that we recommend for bed bug control contain permethin as the ingredient or inert ingredients. We are unsure of where you have received this information but if you look at our Bed Bug Concentrates you can see the ingredients in each listed on every product page. You may see in our Bedlam Aerosol the ingredient permethrin as this formulation of the product mixed with its inert ingredients will work on bed bugs. Permethrin SFR has a completely different base and is formulated to be used on surfaces that will not contact skin for prolonged periods of time. While the active ingredient is the same the carrier is different and using Permethrin SFR on bedding like the Bedlam for bed bug control could lead to illness and skin irritations. You may be seeing that the ingredients in the bed bug products are Pyrethroids, which is a man made version of Pyrethrin which is the all natural ingredient derived from the crysanthymum plant. Please let us know if you have any questions.

  • Asked by Mike from Cedar Rapids Iowa
    07/17/2013
    Q
What is the rate of Permethrin SFR 36.8% to use to control Japanese beetles in ornamental trees?
    A

Per the product label: Use 4 to 8 ounces per 100 gallons of water or Broadcast 0.9 to 1.8 Fluid Ounces Per 10,000 sq. ft. This will be best applied by way of a tank sprayer and not by a hose end sprayer. If a hose end sprayer is the only available option it must be one with a dial to select the correct dilution rate per gallon/1000 sq/ft. You would set the dial to 1 teaspoon per gallon of water per 1000 sq/ft.

  • Asked by Mitzi from Maxton,
    07/09/2013
    Q
Can Permethrin be used on wet ground? Do i need to remove my dogs to apply?
    It has rained a lot.
    A
You will want to keep the dogs out of the area while you do the treatment and until the entire treated area has dried. You will also want to make sure it is not going to rain for at least 6 hours after application of the product as well. It is okay for the ground to be a little wet from the rain but the wet ground will make the product take longer to dry. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Asked by Earl from Sachse, Tx
    06/18/2013
    Q
Would Permethrin SFR 36.8% be effective killing chiggers?
    A
Permethrin SFR 36.8% is not labeled for chiggers. Onslaught insecticide is labeled for chiggers and can be used both indoors and outdoors as a broadcast spray. Chiggers are not known to infest structures. Chiggers are most likely outdoors in your yard. Many people are lead to believe that the infestation is indoors because they do not feel the effects of the chigger bites right away and then are lead to believe they are being bitten at a later time. Treatments for chiggers should begin in May and could need to continue through the summer as new chiggers move into the area. Treating the entire lawn is of little benefit because chiggers avoid direct sunlight and normally will not infest areas that are mowed or otherwise well maintained. Focus treatment on the unkempt areas of the lawn and lawn edge. You can also use Onslaught to do a barrier treatment around the outside of your home and in your crawl space to stop pests from moving indoors. If you feel strongly that you are being bitten inside by something we would urge you to get a sample of the pest and have it professionally identified by an entomologist. You can find an entomologist in your area by contacting your local cooperative extension office.

  • Asked by Lisa
    06/17/2013
    Q
How do I apply Permethrin as a barrier against termite and carpenter ant infestations in the home?
I would like to protect my home against further infestation from carpenter ants and termites. What are the best places to apply the product? Also, how do I apply the product to the interior of the basement and attic to control spiders and silverfish?
    A
Permethrin SFR is not labeled for indoor use. You could use our Carpenter Ant kit that contains Dominion 2L that will treat both termites and carpenter ants, as well as a protein based bait and sweet based bait that can be used indoors where you have seen the ant activity. You can use a product like Tempo SC Ultra indoors to control the spiders, silverfish and more. Please make sure to review the product labels before application.
