    Q
What's a good surfactant to mix with Safari 20SG Dinotefuran for Emerald Ash Borer?
I want maximum penetration into the tree.
    A
The Non-Ionic Surfactant for Herbicides would be a great choice. It will increase the penetration, coverage and overall effectiveness of almost any herbicide, fungicide or insecticide.

    Q
Sensation Maple with Armored or Oyster scale
Which product (Zylam or Safari) would work best for an armored scale or oyster shell scale on a Sensation Maple tree. Would I use either product as a drench or trunk spray? Thank you so very much for a reply!!!!!
    A
Either product will work very well to control armored scale on your Maple tree. It would be best to use the Safari 20 SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuron as a systemic soil drench as well as a foliar spray. Please be sure to read the product label before complete use instructions.

    Q
Will Safari kill white flies and aphids in an orchids greenhouse?
How many times do I have to spray, and what is the application per gallon of water for misting system set 1:100? Is a 3lb size in liquid or solids??
    A
Yes, Safari is labeled for white flies and aphids in a greenhouse. You would spray once and if it is necessary to do a second application, it should be done 14-21 days after the inital one. The application is 1:100. It is a water soluble granule.

  • Asked by John from Maryland
    08/24/2014
    Q
Is a surfactant recommended for basal bark treatment of hemlock woolly adelgid?
10-70 cm dbh hemlocks. The larger ones have very woody bark.
    A

Per the product label, you can mix Safari 20SG with a surfactant, but it may not be very helpful for woolly adelgids in particular since they are mostly controlled by ingesting the active ingredient rather than by contact:

Tank mixing with a surfactant may improve control of pests such as whitefly, mealybug and scale. Confirm plant safety of tank mix in small area before using on a commercial scale.

  • Asked by Mary from Huntersville

    Q
Will Safari 20SG prepared as a soil drench control scale on a pin oak?
Pin oak is planted in a 3 foot strip of soil between the road and sidewalk in a subdivision. No wonder it's stressed!
    A
Safari is certainly labeled to control scale, but honestly if will control it or not will depend more on what type of scale it is (soft or armored) and what life cycle/stage it is in as more mature stages can be almost impossible to control. Can you give us more information or see if a pest control company in your area can identify the type of scale you have?

    Q
Can Safari 20SG be used to treat bronze birch borer in birch tees?
I have a white birch with borer holes on the trunk and foliage thinning on the top 1/3 of the canopy. What is the best method to apply? How does the effectiveness compare to other systemic insecticides?
    A
Safari 20SG  is not labeled to treat Bornze Birch Borer. Bronze Birch Borer can be difficult to treat. You can try Merit 75.You will dilute the 1.6 oz pack in at least 10 gallons of water and pour the dilution around the base of the tree. You will need to use 1.6 oz (1 packet) MERIT 75 WSP per 24 to 48 inches of trunk diameter.

    Q
    Cost vs Imidacloprid
It looks like the fertilome may be more cost effective for EAB? However, with Dinoteguran as a trunk spray you don't have to worry about soil moisture and leaf debris. So Dinoteguran may be more likely to succeed?
    A
What exactly would you be treating for? The best product to use is based on that versus the treatment method.

    Q
scale on trees too mature for treatment?
hello, wondering if i can send in some pics for you to determine severity of infection. I have read several of the q&a topics and one saying impossible to control scale if it is too far along has me concerned about wasting my money here. Please advise.
    A
A better option may be to contact your local cooperative extension office. They would better be able to give you an idea of what stage the scale is in on your trees. We would be happy to let you know which products work best for scale.

  • Asked by Jim from Fort Myers, Fl
    08/05/2015
    Q
How much Safari 20SG do I mix to treat very large ficus hedges (or trees) that are approximately 40 feet tall?
We have very mature shrubs and trees all throughout the property. We use a 300 gal. spray tank when treating large areas. I would like the foliar and soil drench ratios.
    A

Safari 20SG is mixed at 1.0 tsp per gallon of water to cover 200 sq ft. for a foliar spray application for most treatments. Safari is a fairly complicated product to use, and we want to make sure you are getting the correct usage information, so we are recommending that you contact Valent directly. You can reach Valent by calling 800-682-6368. You will need to also provide the targeting insect as well. Please review the product label for complete directions.

  • Asked by William from Houston, Tx
    09/11/2015
    Q
What is the residual of the Safari 20 SG?
I am treating False Oleander Scale (Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli) on Banana Shrubs (Michelia figo). The scale is in various stages, including adult, on two shrubs. One, 6' in container, and a second 15-20' in ground. Both are still actively growing in the Houston area. My question is, how long is the residual effect of Safari? I'm ideally looking for an effective systemic that will be inactive by the time the shrubs begin to set flower buds in the spring (to minimize any collateral damage on pollinators such as bees). I wasn't able to locate that information on the product label, so any help you can offer is appreciated. Thanks.
    A

Safari 20 SG Systemic Insecticide will typically last between 6 months to 1 year. Please keep in mind that there are many variables that can influence how long a systemic is still active in the target plant such as soil condition, rainfall, and health of the plant.

  • Asked by Chris from Coronado, Ca

    Q
What's alternative to Safari 20SG for California?
I've been using Safari 20SG against myaporum thrips successfully (basal trunk application), but now not shippable to CA. What effective alternate product do you recommend?
    A

We do have various products that are labeled for thrips that can go to California. ImidaPro 4SC is a very good product that can be used as a basal trunk treatment. It is also labeled for certain edibles as well. If you would like another product that contains the active ingredient Dinotefuran, Zylam Liquid Systemic Insecticide would be a good choice and is labeled for thrips. Be sure to check the product label to be sure that it is labeled for your needs. It also comes in a soluble granule formulation, Zylam 20SG Systemic Turf Insecticide.
