    Q
What is the best product for caterpillar control?
I want to eliminate caterpillars from my fruit trees before the new leaves appear
    A
We would recommend using Sevin Concentrate. It is labeled for fruit trees, ornamentals, vegetable gardens, shrubs, flowers and outdoor insect perimeter control in residential areas. It is labeled to for caterpillars. You will mix 1.5 to 3.0 fl. oz. per gallon of water. This can be applied with a pump sprayer or a hose end sprayer. Please check the label to ensure that the fruit trees you are treating are on the label. Also, please check the harvest times because this is very important.

    Q
Can I apply Sevin Concentrate to my backyard sweet corn?
I am a small backyard organic gardner. I was told that a farmer friend recommended this product to use on my sweet corn. I will not apply in my surrounding vegetation. When do I apply this to my sweet corn, and how often and where do you apply it on the corn? Is it before tasseling or after pollinating?
    A

Sevin Concentrate can be used on sweet corn up to 3 days before harvest, per the product label, however this is not an organic product. You can use PyGanic Gardening on corn up to day of harvest for the adult insects. Please take a few moments to review this Extension article which has great information about this insect.

  • Asked by Anita from Watertown, New York

    Q
Does Sevin Concentrate kill psyllids and leaf miners on boxwoods?
How long does it take to kill these insects? I sprayed 4 days ago and they are still alive.
    A

Sevin Concentrate is labeled for both psylids and leafminers.  The exact amount of time it takes to kill an insect will depend on a number of factors, such as where the insect is in its life cycle and how long it spent in contact with a treated surface.  You should start to see results in a few days, but reapplication may be necessary per the product label, especially if the infestation is severe.

    Q
I need to control scale on a young tulip tree.
Will Sevin concentrate poured on the ground in the root area do the job?
    A
Sevin Concentrate is used mainly as a foliar treatment. It can be sprayed directly on the tree to treat for scale. If you are wanting to treat systemically, Fertilome Tree & Shrub Insect Drench would be a better option. It is safe to use on your trees. You will use 1 fl. oz. per inch of distance around the trunk.

    Q
Will Sevin kill black vine weevil?
    A
Sevin is labeled for weevils but does not exactly list black vine weevil. Talstar is labeled for treatment of weevils and many of our customers have cited success with Talstar for weevils.  The product label calls for half an ounce per gallon of water, and this should be applied over 1000 square feet.  There are not really any special instructions other then to cover all foliage completely including the base and trunks of the non-edible plants.

  • Asked by Jamie from San Mateo

    Q
Will Sevin Concentrate work on an apricot tree that has borers?
Tree is producing sap bubbles, clear and parts of the limbs are dying.
    A

Sevin Concentrate could be used on apricot trees for prevention and early treatment. Per the product label: Do not use on large trees or where pest populations are generally inaccessible to spray deposits, as inadequate performance will result.

Unfortunately, once the borers have already infested the tree there are not any viable treatment options as they would be protected from sprays. In cases of infestation the general recommendation is to simply protect the surrounding trees with preventative sprays with a product labeled for such a use.  There is a great read here by University of CA.
