Yes, the mattress covers can be used on the box springs. The box springs can rip when used on the metal bed frames, and you do not take time to protect the edges of the frame where it rubs up against the box spring.  As long as you place foam or some type of protection near the sharp metal edges of the bed frame, you will be fine.
