Sod webworms are the larval stage of a group of moths that can cause considerable turf damage in lawns. There are many species of sod webworms, but they all generally look the same. It's important to be able to identify this lawn pest so you can control them effectively.

Life Cycle

Sod webworms start out very small in the soil, and will curl up into balls when they're disturbed. The larvae construct silken tubes that they live in.

They can vary widely in color, from tan to brown to green or gray, and will have dark spots and dark heads. They will grow up to about 3/4" long.

Adults, the moths, are small, often known as "snout moths," because of a snout-like protrusion on the front of their heads. They are weak fliers and will fly up a short distance if disturbed before landing back on the grass.
