I just bought a house, can you give me a Home Pest Control plan to follow? Mainly to prevent indoor insects
No bugs seen at all yet but as prevention to roaches, ants, spiders etc. I'm totally new to this and would appreciate guidance. Also require pet and baby safe since I have 5 indoor cats and 3 dogs and a newborn. House is in nice well kept HOA and lawn gets treated also.

One of our most populare product for overall control is Talstar P.  A multi-Insecticide with bifenthrin is one of the most trusted and widely-used insecticides by pest control professionals today. The name Talstar P/Talstar One means one professional solution for everything. Talstar will last outdoors 1-2 months and indoors 3 months. Child and pet safe after the treated areas have dried. Dry time is approx one hour.

    Q
I want to spray my own house for bugs. I live in Oklahoma City, and I used to pay a service to do it.
They went out of business and I was forced to use Terminix. Well they suck. I just want to keep insects out of my house, but I don't know what to buy or how to apply. I have a small ant problem in one of the bedrooms as well. Any tips? Oh, I would also like to keep the flies down in the summer. Any suggestions for that? thanks,
    A
Our most popular general use product is called Talstar. It is widely used by pest control companies because it is labeled for almost every insect you could have a problem with and you can use it outside the home as well as inside, it is odorless and very safe for use around children and pets. It is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water in a one gallon hand pump sprayer. It will last for 60 to 90 days outside in between treatments. It is also labeled for lawn and ornamental use, and can be used on trees, plants, bushes and shrubs for all sorts of ornamental pests including Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and other leaf eating pests. Talstar is also available in a granule formula called Talstar PL if you prefer to use granules.
Talstar P is labeled to help control many types of flies and can be applied to your lawn as well for them.
You may be seeing ants in the bathrooms, because they are looking for water. Since ants can be quite fickle with the foods they are eating, we recommend the Complete Ant Kit. This kit combines both a sweet and protein based bait. Please also see Ant control article.

    Q
What is the best outside treatment for my centipede problem?
Of all the products that say they kill centipedes which works best for my whole yard. I have pest control come to treat inside my house. Im still getting tons of centipedes entering the house eventually dying. However my yard and driveway and front entrance is full of them where we do not treat I'm trying to take control of these darn things from entering the house. I figure now I need to treat our whole property. So which is the best product you sell.
    A

Talstar P would be a good choice to use around the inside and outside of your home to eliminate centipedes. Indoors you can apply Talstar P to door frames, window frames, places where utilities enter into the structure, and any other place where the insects can gain entry. Outdoors you should apply the product to door frames, window frames, places where utilities enter into the structure, around the bottom of the foundation and out onto the ground directly around the foundation. You can also limit favorable conditions that the centipedes need to thrive.

    Remove Favorabe Conditions

    • Fix leaky faucets or pipes and dry up wet or damp areas where centipedes thrive
    • Remove outdoor harborages near the home that hold moisture (compost, wood, or leaf piles, etc).
    • Store firewood off the ground at least 20 feet away from the home
    • Water your lawn in the morning so that it will be dry by afternoon
    • Do not over mulch flower beds, since soggy mulch is an ideal harborage for centipedes

    Q
Hi, Can I use washing up liquid/similar to act as a surfactant for Talstar P for bird mite?
I am in the process of tidying the house and treating room by room. I have found and eliminated what I think are the sources which were vacated house sparrow and starling nests in my eaves. The house dates from 1690's so I guess this would happen sooner or later! I want to treat wooden, carpet and linoleum flooring of various types but would like the surfactant to offer more 'hold' of the chemical. I will look to retreat in 7 days to catch the life cycle.
    A
A surfactant is not usually needed when using Talstar P and is generally only to be used if you are trying to protect a plant with waxy leaves and need the product to stick a bit better.  Talstar P is not actually labeled to treat bird mites and it is only labeled to apply in cracks and crevices indoors.  When treating for bird mites usually you would want to spray all carpeted areas and lightly spray the flooring and to do that you would need a product like Onslaught which will give you a wider usage range indoors. Please review our article on How To Control Bird Mites for complete information.

    Q
What surfactant would you use with Talstar P?
We live in a wet part of Hawaii and we would like to spray the perimeter of our house for centipedes.
    A

It is not usually required to use a surfactant with Talstar P but adding one will increase the effectiveness and help it stick to waxy leaves better. The Hi-Yield Spreader Sticker would be a great choice.

    Q
Can I mix Talstar and Roundup Concentrate for simultaneous application?
I have a gravel belt around my house with millipedes and various weeds. Would make life easier if I could cover it in one pass.
    A
We do not recommend mixing any type of herbicide with insecticide. Each contain different properties that could degrade the effectiveness of the active ingredients.

    Q
What product should I use for prevention instead of what an exterminator uses?
I do not want to have to have a service contract with an exterminator, but I'd also rather not wait to see bugs in my house. They would spray stuff outside the house, and then inside the house. While I am sure they handed me something that said it, I am also sure its exterminator grade, and I can not buy it. Is there something you would recommend that I can spray the same way, as an amateur, or do you disagree with the preventative spraying?
    A
We do carry and sell all of the same products professional pest control operators use. Unless you live in a restricted state, you can purchase and use the same products. (restricted states are listed on each individual product page on our site.) Talstar P would a great all around insecticide for you to use indoors and outdoors for preventative pest control. Talstar P kills over 75 different insect pests and has a long residual, so it keeps on killing pests for over three months after you have sprayed it. Plus, Talstar P is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and will not break down easily with rainfall. We also recommend that you use IPM or Integrated Pest Management to make the environment around your home unsuitable for insects. You can read more about IPM by reading our article : Integrated Pest Management IPM

    Q
Is it safe to eat fruit from a tree that's planted next to a house that's sprayed with Talstar P 4Xs/year?
    A
You can eat the fruit as long as the tree is not sprayed and the soil around the tree is not sprayed. Keep Talstar P out of the trees root zone.

    Q
Need to control a few large american roaches finding their way into the home
I believe our problem started about 3 years ago when I discovered a hole in the lid of my septic tank. The tank had become infested with the large brown (i believe american) roaches. Occasionally we would find one in the house. This year my septic tank was pumped and repaired and I don't see anymore roaches in there. But I believe they may still be in the ground around the septic tank and still finding their way into our house. I can't find how they're getting in, but one thought would be to kill the outside colony. Is this possible? What products should I use? Whenever I spray my normal outside insectiside heavily in the area, it seems better for a little while, but not permanently. I do see several holes in the ground about quarter size that makes me think it could be their ground access.

How to Control American Roaches / Palmetto Bugs

American Roaches come from the outside of the home, so it is best to spray a liquid insecticide around the outside foundation of the home such as Talstar One or Cynoff WP, rather than using roach baits. Also focus on sealing up cracks around doors and in the foundation so roaches can't get in.

    1. Repair damage to screens, door frames, or exterior siding that may provide entry from outside.
    2. Repair any leaks or excess water floor near the structure and ventilate other moist spaces. American cockroaches are highly attracted to water.
    3. Remove rotting leaves, garbage cans, or compost piles as far from the structure as possible.
    4. Use a residual spray such as Talstar One or Cynoff WP outside around all points of possible entry including windows and door frames, dryer vents, and pipe openings. Use the same residual indoors along baseboards and framed entry points.
    5. For added protection, apply Talstar Granules outside around the base of the house as a perimeter treatment.
