    Q
What is the best way to eliminate cicada killers?
They are taking over my lawn year after year. Help! They bury in the ground all night and fly around the yard all day. Not good for my son or my dog. They can't go outside during the day, there are too many of these things flying around. Time to eliminate them......
    A
Cicada Killers are actually benificial insects and will not harm you, your son or your dog. They are not aggressive insects just ominous looking because of their size, and you would literally have to take one and force it on your skin to get it to bite you. If you are wanting to eliminate them, the best way to treat is to use a dust in each hole in the yard. This may seem extremely time consuming and tedious but it is truly the most effective and thorough treatment method. Dusting the holes with something like Tempo 1% Dust will allow it to flow through the nest better than a liquid. You could also use the Talstar P or the liquid version of Tempo-Tempo SC Ultra-since it has a quicker knock down to control the surface areas they could land to help control new ones that enter the area. Dust the holes and treat plant/lawn surfaces with Tempo every 30 days through the season. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
Does Talstar kill fleas, bedbugs, and cockroach eggs?
    A
Talstar P is labeled for fleas, bedbugs, and roaches. However, Talstar P will not kill roach eggs and should only be used outdoors for fleas, NOT indoor flea control. Fleas, bedbugs, and roaches are all hard to control insects and we would recommend a targeted treatment plan to ensure complete erradication. Q
I have read that Talstar is safe for pets, but what if my pets eat the grass?
I recently purchased Talstar to treat ants on our property after reading all the reviews. I know pets can enter the treated area after the product has dried, but my issue is that two of my dogs have been eating grass in the yard, and there are a fair amount of ant colonies that I need to treat in the yard itself. My concern is they may eat grass that may have been treated along the property line or around a concrete pad I plan to treat. What precautions do I need to take here? Is there another product you would recommend instead?
    A
I would imagine that your dogs may eat some grass but probably not a lot of it at once.  Talstar, when mixed with water is only strong enough to kill small insects, like ants.  Your dogs would have to eat a truckload of grass most likely to get sick, and they would probably get much more sick from the grass then the Talstar.  However, of course we recommend anything you can do to minimize your dogs from eating the grass.  The other thing you could do is not broadcast the spray over the whole lawn, but treat the ant mounds individually so the grass in between the mounds is free from spray.  Hopefully your dogs don't eat dirt mounds also.

    Q
Can I pour Talstar around a tree to try and poison the pests within?
I have seen signs of the emerald ash borer on our property. Now I also am seeing signs of the asian longhorn beetle in our maple and pine trees. If I pour this around the tree and the tree drinks it up will it then kill these pests as they eat the wood from the inside? I have never seen these bugs on the outside of the tree but the signs of the asian longhorn beetle are hard to miss.
    A
Talstar P will not work as a systemic insecticide and will not eliminate insects inside the tree. You will need to purchase a product that contains imidacloprid such as Merit 75 WSP, Adonis 75 WSP, Adonis 2F, Dominion 2L, Criterion 75 WSP and Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic. Each of these products will work systemically to help treat for Emerald Ash Borers and Asian Long Horned Beetles but the application and usage rate will vary so you should read the product label of the product you are considering and make sure you are comfortable with the application before purchasing. Systemic products can take several weeks to translocate through a plant. Trees that have not been infested with these beetles can be protected with topical bark sprays like the Talstar P. We recommend you contact your local cooperative extension office and speak to the master gardener or entomologist on staff to find out when the best time to apply a systemic and/or a bark spray would be as this varies from region to region. Heavily infested trees may need to be taken down and chipped or burned to help save the neighboring trees.

    Q
What should I use for home maintainence to protect from roach, ant, spiders & general bug problems?
I just fired my pest control company after continued 10 years of service. The cost was skyrocketing and I felt I could do it myself, for less money. I live in Northwestern area of South Carolina (foothills). I am not currently experiencing any problems and want to keep it that way. In the past I have had an occasional roach bug (German, American cockroaches) transit the home (inside) from one side to the other, Also an line of very tiny ants, that may come in from a flower windowbox just outside the kitchen sink. My home is situated on a wooded lot, surrounded by Oak trees. Also, the pest company did occasionally spray around the perimeter of the home for roaches/ants and often applied a granulated bait around the home. The wife is threatening to 'call the pest company' if she see's any roaches. Save me! What products do you recommend?
