    Q
Do I have to remove thatch prior to Talstar P application for chinch bugs on a St Augustine lawn in FL?
    A

Talstar P are one of the most effective chinch bug treatments on the market. Chinch bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Chinch bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher applications rates will be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the summer. It may also be necessary to remove the thatch layer if it exceeds 1 inch in thickness to allow the Talstar to penetrate down to the soil.

If you have a few small spots the St. Augustine runners might fill it in this season (of course water, fertilizer, and lots of sunshine helps). If large portions of the lawn were damaged it will likely be late spring or later of next year before the lawn recovers. Very heavily damaged areas may need to be resodded.

    Q
I live in Mississippi and want to enjoy our outdoor area without flies and mosquitoes. What should i use?
Can you please provide the equipment and product to go outside to help me?
    A
One of the best products to use for mosquito and fly control would be the Talstar P. Its a great general use insecticide that is safe for plants, trees, lawns and even indoor use, and has no odor and leaves behind no stain or visible residue. It will hold up to the outdoor elements for at least 30 days and in some areas you could get up to 60 days control from each spray. You would mix Talstar at the rate of 1 ounce per gallon of water. You can spray the talstar with something like a Chapin 1 Gallon Pump Sprayer, or if you have a larger area to spray you could use a backpack sprayer like the Chapin ProSeries 4 gallon sprayer. For added control over the mosquitoes, flies and other bugs in your area, you could mix in NyGuard IGR to the same gallon of water mixture with the Talstar. The NyGuard is birth control for the insects to help keep them from reproducing faster than you can kill them. While the Talstar will only last about 30-60 days, the NyGuard is actually formulated to hold up to sunlight for up to 5 months so you may only need to spray it once or twice per season. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
What is the best general product (probably granules) for general insect/pest control for lawns in S. Florida
I live in Plantation, FL 33324..... looking for the best outside general insect/pest control for my lawns .... are granules better than spraying, as I can do either. Also just recently have the little ghost/sugar ants inside my car.. what do I use for that.
    A

Our most popular general use product is called Talstar. It is widely used by pest control companies because it is labeled for almost every insect you could have a problem with and you can use it outside the home as well as inside, it is odorless and very safe for use around children and pets. It is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water in a one gallon hand pump sprayer. It will last for 60 to 90 days outside in between treatments. It is also labeled for lawn and ornamental use, and can be used on trees, plants, bushes and shrubs for all sorts of ornamental pests including Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and other leaf eating pests. Talstar is also available in a granule formula called Talstar PL if you prefer to use granules.

Our Complete Ant Kit is perfect for sugar ants, or argentine ants which is what their real name is.  The ants will eat the products in the Complete Ant Kit and take them back to wherever their colony is and feed the bait to the queen and all of the other colony members.  Usually within 5 - 10 days the entire colony will be eliminated.  The ant gel is for placement inside the home or car, and the granules are meant for outside around the home.  However, since our kit comes with bait plate stations, you can place both the gel and the granules in the bait plate stations so the ants inside the car have a choice when feeding.

    Q
Will Talstar P and Bifen IT be the best choice for mosquitos, spiders and other general pests?
Hello... Last "mid summer" I used Talstar liquid all around the house, patio and deck as well as my shop building to try and control ants, spiders and other bugs in general. I also used Bifen granules in the yard and shrub areas. Between those two products, it seem to work very well for the bulk of the summer season, even on Mosquitoes. I'm out of the granules and low on the Talstar and need to get more but my question is: Is there something that I should be using instead of the Talstar and Bifen that would work better yet? We're in Idaho and the main insects I'd like to stop are the ants, all spiders in general and the mosquitoes. I realize there are many other insects that these products kill as well which is good but you have so many products available and at all seem to overlap in killing different types if insects that I'm having a hard time deciding on what would be the best to use this again year. Thanks much, Duane Walker

Talstar P or Bifen IT mixed with NyGuard IGR would be a great choice for mosquito control and they are also labeled for spiders and other listed insects. You will mix an ounce per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft per month on the exterior of the structure. During mosquito season, you will add 3ml to the Talstar P or Bifen IT and it will last for 7 months. It is an insect growth regulator and does not have to be applied as often as the insecticide concentrate.
