    Q
I have a multitude of problems with bugs in my home. What is the best way to safely exterminate them?
I have found spiders, silverfish, centipedes, milipedes, ants, etc. in my home and want to accomplish safe extermination. I think it would be best to do outside as well as inside pest control but I am concerned about the safety of my dog. What product(s) would you recommend to accomplish pest control but also be safe for my pet and myself?
    A
Talstar P (Talstar One) is one of our best sellers for all around pest control. Talstar kills over 75 insect pests and can be used for indoor pest control, outdoor pest control, has a long residual, so it keeps on killing pests for over three months after you've sprayed it, is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, won't break down easily with rainfall and is safe to use around pets. Be sure animals are out of the area while Talstar is being applied and then they can return as soon as the area is dry.

    Q
Japanese beetles are eating almost everything in my yard. What can I use that will be safe for my flowers?
They are also eating my flowering crab trees, oak trees and just about every tree in the area. Where do they come from and how can I safely rid my yard of these things? I have 3 Japanese Beetle bags out and they are each about 2 to 3 inches full of bugs, but they are everywhere. I have sprayed a 3 in 1 Systemic on my Rose bushes and flowers around the house and they are back in just a few days. Tonight, I counted over 200 hundred of them on a combination of trees and bushes in my yard. I spray the bugs with a Dawn dish soap and water mixture in between the Systemic spray, but I can't get ahead of them. HELP !!!
    A
We would recommend Talstar P.  It is a insecticide that is labeled for lawn and ornamentals and is safe for plants, bushes, shrubs and trees.  You can also apply it inside and outside your home for insects that try to enter the house.  You would not want to apply Talstar P on any garden vegetables or something you are going to eat.  TalstarP will provide a 30 day residual on the plants that you spray and should provide relief against the Japanese beetles.

    Q
I have larder beetles. I need to know what I can use to get rid of them but will not harm my Macaws?
I am in an apartment, and I know they are using the radiators. The eggs have hatched and now these beetles are already shedding by the time they get to the other register. My cat is excellent at finding these things. Anyway, I have asked my manager to have his bug guy come, but I get nowhere. I also have two Macaws that are VERY sensitive. I cannot even cook on Teflon, the fumes will kill them. Someone told me to use Bifenthrin, but is this safe? What are my alternatives?
    A
Bifenthrin is an active ingredient found in several products, Talstar P being the most popular and widely used bifenthrin product. Talstar P is a very safe product and is even labeled to be used in poultry houses and animal confinement areas. Having said that, we do not feel comfortable making a product recommendation for you because your birds are so sensitive. We recommend you speak to your veterinarian for recommendations or remove the birds completely during the entire treatment process.

    Q
I have tiny black ants living in bonsai pots outside. No food involved, sweet or greasy, how do I kill them?
These ants are also living in the lawn. There are two sizes, one is less than an eighth of an inch, the other is even tinier. They are shiny solid black. The tiniest ones will crawl up onto the tops of my feet and bite. They actually have eggs in the soil of the plant pots. I have a few mealybugs here and there, and the occasional group of aphids, but otherwise, I cannot figure out why they want to be in the pots. I would love to find a drench where I could submerge the whole pot and get rid of them for good. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
    A
You can use Talstar P to spray the plant and soil to get rid of these tiny pests. Since you know exactly where the ant colony is, you can treat it directly. Talstar P is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water and spray directly in the infested areas. You can use 1 oz of concentrate per gallon of water. Talstar can also be used to help eliminate ants in the yard and as a general insecticide to keep other nuisance pests out of your home

    Q
Can I use Talstar P to get rid of cluster flies?
    A
Talstar P can be used to help control cluster flies indoors and outdoors. If the cluster flies have already made their way indoors, they will be harder to control because they usually hide in a wall void or other inaccessible area and are only visible when the house warms up. If the cluster flies are in an attic or drop ceiling or other dark area, a fly light would do a great job controlling the population. Using small fly lights such as the Fly Web in the house would also help to catch the flies. Spray Talstar P directly on baseboards, window frames, door frames, and places where utilities (pipes, wires, cables) enter in to the building and any other crack, crevice or gap where insects can enter.

    Q
Can Talstar Pro be used on vegetable plants?
    A
Talstar P cannot be used on any type of edible vegetation. We do carry a wide variety of products that can be used on vegetables. You can type in the name of the vegetable you need to treat into the search window (upper left hand side) of our home page and this will help narrow down the choices. When you see the products come up you can click on them and you will be able to see the full product descriptions as well as the product label. We encourage our customers to read the product label of the product they are interested in purchasing to be sure it will fit their needs.

    Q
What would be the best killer for deer ticks?
    A

Talstar P would be a great choice for indoor and outdoor tick control. We also recommend adding an insect growth regulator such as Archer IGR to Talstar to stop the ticks from being able to mature while you are trying to eliminate the infestation. You will use 1 oz of Talstar +  1oz of Archer IGR per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft area. Do not make spot applications. Treat the entire area where exposure to ticks may occur. Use more water (not more product) when treating areas with dense ground cover or heavy leaf litter. Ticks may be reintroduced from surrounding areas on host animals. Retreatment may be necessary to achieve and/or maintain control during periods of high pest pressure. All of your pets should be treated with a product that is specifically labeled for use on pets for tick control.

You can also help by creating a "tick safe zone" in your yard. You should have an area that is at least 9 ft wide between your yard and any wooded area. Trim back trees to allow as much sunlight as possible into your yard. Keep grass as short. Remove as much leaf litter as possible. A clearly defined, well manicured border between your yard and any wooded areas or weedy lots will reduce the chance of ticks infesting your yard.

    Q
What is the best product to help eliminate spiders from neglected property including in trees?
I have just recently bought about 4 acres of land (no house) ,which is about 1/4 mile from a lake, which has not been kept up in a very long time. The grass, ivy, and bugs have had free reign during that time. I purchased the deltagard from you for the chiggers and other ground insects and it's worked great! There are MANY spiders on the land, both on the ground and in the trees. They literally land on you if you walk underneath the trees. I have access to a pressure washer to use to spray the trees (especially around the firepit and patio area). The 3 trees that I would be spraying are 100 year old oaks. I don't, however, want to hurt the trees or the birds. Do you have a liquid insecticide that I could use for this?
    A
Talstar P would be a good choice to use outdoors to help control spiders. It is important to remember that Talstar P does not give an immediate knockdown but instead works over a period of several hours to kill spiders that have come into contact with the product. Talstar P will also help to get rid of the insects that spiders feed on and that will help to stop new spiders from moving in. You can spray the lawn, trees and other plants with Talstar P.

    Q
In what proportion do I mix Talstar P for spraying in the house? And also in the Yard?
    A
The Talstar P product label allows you to use 1/4 fl oz - 1 fl oz per gallon of water for indoor and outdoor spraying. We recommend using the 1 fl oz per gallon of water usage rate for the fastest knockdown and longest lasting residual. Please refer to the Talstar P product label for complete usage instructions.

    Q
Can an Ortho Dial and Spray be used to spread Talstar P?
Have sod webworms and need to spray 15000 sq ft lawn. If so what setting?
    A

You can use a hose-end sprayer to apply Talstar P. You shoul use 1 oz per 1000 sq ft, and we recommend using 1-3 gallons of water per 1,000 sq ft. Keep in mind that it is most important to use the correct amount of concentrate and then think of the water as a carrier, so it is better to use a bit more water than to use too little. For example, to treat half your yard, you would use 7.5 oz at a rate no higher than 1 oz per gal of water, but usually it is best to use a rate of 0.3 or 0.5 oz per gal of water with a hose-end sprayer. You can always start with a small area and test using just water to get an idea for how heavily you tend to spray and how fast you walk when spraying.

    A

Yes, you can use Talstar P in both food/feed and non-food/feed areas of food-handling establishments like restaurants as a spot or crack and crevice spray. Q
Is Talstar P the best way to kill fungus gnats and keep them from returning?
Our 'yard' is roughly 1/2 acre in size and there is one 20'x20' wet spot that rarely dries. There is a second area(a swale) that sometimes collects some rain water as well.
    A

Talstar P (Talstar One) is a great product to use for fungus gnat control. It is to be used inside and outside the home, but will only kill the adults as the larvae is protected in its egg form much like a chicken egg is protected until cracked. To control the larvae you would need to mix the NyGuard IGR (birth control) in with the Talstar. NyGuard is labeled for fungus gnats as well as a large variety of other insects to sterilize the adults from being able to lay viable larvae. This will control the population drastically in keeping new ones from developing. You should mix 1 ounce of Talstar P with 4 ml of NyGuard IGR to each gallon of water you use. Talstar P can be used as a broadcast over the entire lawn or just as a perimeter treatment. You will want to focus on the mulch bed area and the underside of shrubs, bushes, or trees in the area. It is completely safe to spray on ornamentals. In the garage area, spray as crack and crevice and focus on damp areas/reducing the water/moisture. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Q
Is Talstar P Insecticide safe around birds?
    A

For outdoor use the Talstar P will be safe for animals of all kinds once dry. For indoor use if you have pet birds, we recommend removing the birds from the home while you treat and for at least 4-6 hours to give plenty of time for the product to dry and air out. Birds are more sensitive to chemicals and smells so keeping them out of the treatment areas for longer than pets like dogs and cats is recommended. If you have any safety concerns regarding its use around your birds please take info on the product to your birds vet for consultation.

    Q
What size Talstar P would I need to control Cinch bugs for a 2500 sq ft yard?
    A

When using Talstar P, the mixing ratio is 1 fl. oz. per gallon of water. This will generally treat 1000 sq. ft. For your lawn, you will need to fill up your sprayer at least three times to complete your entire lawn. The pint size of Talstar P would make 16 gallons of solution and treat 16,000 sq ft.

  • Asked by Todd from Mclean, Va
    12/18/2015
    Q
Is it more effective to use a repellent or non-repellent insecticide around the perimeter of a home?
Also, does it matter on the season?
    A

Both non-repellents and repellent insecticides will eventually eradicate the pests that the products are labeled for. Non-repellents allow more time for the insects to be able to take the product back to their colony and transfer the product among each other. "Repellent" insecticides, such as Talstar P, are not detected until the insect you're treating comes in contact with the product - it will give off a "tingling" sansation or so to the insect but by then it will be too late for the insect. Eventually both types of products will work as long as the right amount of product is being used. Talstar P is a great choice to someone beginning to do their own pest control. Please see our Pest Library for more detailed information about specific pests.
