    Q
We are looking for a product that will kill fire ants in Florida and still be horse friendly we have about 7
acres to be treated how much do i need?
    A
Extinguish Plus is actually the product of choice in areas where horses may be kept or will be grazing (as long as the horses will not be used for feed or food). Extinguish Plus combines the power of hydramethylnon with an insect growth regulator (IGR) to kill fire ant workers and prevent queens from laying fertile eggs. The result is complete fire ant colony control. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is best used in the spring or early fall, or whenever fire ants are active. The ants will feed off Extinguish Plus and spread the bait throughout the entire colony, halting the infestation within weeks. You will need about 2 lbs per acre and you can purchase it in a 25 lb bag. Talstar cannot be used on areas where animlas will graze.

    Q
    Can i apply Talstar P on furniture/couches?
I have a flea problem and i have some living in my couches. Is it safe to spray down the couch or other furniture that has cloth?
    A
You cannot spray furniture with Talstar. Talstar P cannot be used as a broadcast spray indoors and would not be a good choice for indoor flea control. We recommend you use Ultracide for indoor flea control. It is our recommendation and industry standard that you vacuum immediately before the application of Ultracide and every day or every other day after the application for the next two weeks. Vacuums can physically remove a decent percentage of flea eggs that are in the carpet, along with much of the organic crud that the flea larvae feed on. A critical part of the diet of the larva is dried blood, present there as fecal material from the fleas that are on the pets. Wherever the pets spend time, they will shed the fecal matter and the eggs, so it is extremely important that you focus on these potential hot spots where the pets sleep. A vacuum also will remove a small percentage of larvae, but the larva is pretty tenacious, and will wrap around the carpet fibers down there at the base of the pile, and hold on for dear life as the vacuum passes by. The pupa is even tougher to physically remove, for it uses fibers as part of its "cocoon". The vacuum will stimulate the flea adults still in their pupa form to quickly emerge as the adult, and at this point perhaps be sucked up in the vacuum. Even if they are not removed by the vacuum, at least they now are exposed and susceptible to your treatment.   After two weeks most infestations require that you do a second application of the Ultracide and continue with the vacuuming. You should use a product that is registered to use on your pets for fleas such as Prefurred or Advantage. Talstar P can be used effectively outdoors for places where your pets may frequent and also moist shady areas. Treating outdoors will help prevent your pets from re-infesting your home.

    Q
I plan to use Talstar on mulch around the foundation of my brick home. granular or liquid?
    A
You will get the same results with both the granule and the liquid in this area. We might lean towards the liquid however because it is a bit more versatile and can be applied to the foundation itself and around window and door frames to stop pests from moving in.

What can I do about a ladybug infestation already inside my home?
    A
Talstar P applications to cracks and crevices around the perimeter of each room, door frames, window frames and other areas where you see ladybugs emerging will help. You can also use a Fly Web light  to capture these nuisance insects as they seem to be attracted to light as well.

  • Asked by Brian from Seymour In

    Q
How do I mix Talstar in a mister for mosquito control?
I am wanting to treat a one acre lawn for mosquitoes. I dont see the application rate for a mister it shows .33 to 1 ounce per gallon per 1,000 square feet. that would be over 43.5 gallon for one acre...i would need to refill about 12.5 times..that seems to be a lot of material for one acre from a backpack mister/blower.
    A
The application usage rate that you noted in your question is correct for mosquito control. Most folks do not treat the entire acre but instead choose to treat in the areas where the mosquitoes will actually make contact with a treated area. The key is to apply it to all shrubs, trees, and other foliage around the house or where you are trying to provide relief.  It should be directed not only on top of the leaves and plants, but on the underside of the leaves as well which is where the mosquitoes hang out during the heat of the day.  Talstar should be applied every 30 days for optimum control.

    Q
Is there a universal product to kill ants/roaches/silverfish?
I live in Florida and want to find something to control the insects in this area. We have a big problem with ants, not sure which kind. They are blank and small. Mounds are abundant on the ground. We just moved here, but the season will come shortly for roaches as well, and we ocassionaly see silverfish.
    A

For mounding ants in the yard you may also want to consider using a bit such as Extinguish Plus. The bait will kill both the workers and other ants in the colony and sterilize the queens so the mounds won't keep moving and popping up in other places. (by using just a topical spray such as Talstar, only the ants that contact the treated areas are killed but the other ants that remain in the colony usually just move and make a new mound).

    Q
How to get rid of sand gnats for a backyard wedding in June?
We live in Georgia on the marsh and would like to have a gnat free evening in June for our son's wedding? Have any suggestions?
    A
Talstar P will offer some control if applied to the trees, bushes and grass a few days before the wedding to lower the gnat population in the area. The morning of the wedding you may want to try to use a pyrethrin based product such as Riptide in a mist blower over the whole area which will kill anything that is flying around and help repel the gnats from the area for several hours.

    Q
I have a great crop of moss in my shaded back yard. Will Talstar eliminate it?
    A
Talstar is an insecticide only and will not have any effect on moss. Burnout Weed and Grass Killer is a non-selective herbicide that is labeled to control moss. You should spray this product only on the moss and avoid getting it on desirable plants.

    Q
What is the most effective, Talstar PL granules or Talstar P liquid, for ant control for a 3acre area?
I've used the Talstar PL granules twice/yr with success for a 3 plus years. However, if the liquid is just as effective, spaying it with a 30gallon sprayer would be more convenient.
    A
Both formulations will provide the same level of control for most insects though the granules are a bit more "time released" and will last a little bit longer than the topical spray.

  • Asked by Dan from Pittsburgh Pa

    Q
How much solution of the Termidor Sc or Talstar P should I spray in the ground were the holes were drilled?
I had my house serviced by a pest co.and they drilled holes every 12 inches, how much solution of the Termidor Sc or Talstar P should I spray in the ground were the holes were drilled(concrete)...Dan
    A
We recommend you use the Termidor SC as it is a much better termite control product. Per the product label you will still need to use 4 gallons of finished solution for every 10 linear feet. So if there is 1 hole every 12 inches you should apply .4 gallon of diluted solution per drilled hole to achieve the correct continuous barrier rate. You can use a sprayer with the nozzle adjusted to pinstream to apply the product to the holes or you can use a funnel inserted into the drilled holes and pour the solution in with a bucket.

What is the best product for eliminating or at least reducing army cut worms?
I believe cut worms develop into millers that invade every crack and crevice every spring and most of the summer here in Wyoming.
    A
Talstar P is one of the most commonly used products to get rid of army worms in lawns. If you need to treat edible vegetation for this pest a spinosad based product would be recommended such as Captain Jacks Deadbug Brew.
