    Q
What is the best general product (probably granules) for general insect/pest control for lawns in S. Florida
I live in Plantation, FL 33324..... looking for the best outside general insect/pest control for my lawns .... are granules better than spraying, as I can do either. Also just recently have the little ghost/sugar ants inside my car.. what do I use for that.
    A

Our most popular general use product is called Talstar. It is widely used by pest control companies because it is labeled for almost every insect you could have a problem with and you can use it outside the home as well as inside, it is odorless and very safe for use around children and pets. It is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water in a one gallon hand pump sprayer. It will last for 60 to 90 days outside in between treatments. It is also labeled for lawn and ornamental use, and can be used on trees, plants, bushes and shrubs for all sorts of ornamental pests including Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and other leaf eating pests. Talstar is also available in a granule formula called Talstar PL if you prefer to use granules.

Our Complete Ant Kit is perfect for sugar ants, or argentine ants which is what their real name is.  The ants will eat the products in the Complete Ant Kit and take them back to wherever their colony is and feed the bait to the queen and all of the other colony members.  Usually within 5 - 10 days the entire colony will be eliminated.  The ant gel is for placement inside the home or car, and the granules are meant for outside around the home.  However, since our kit comes with bait plate stations, you can place both the gel and the granules in the bait plate stations so the ants inside the car have a choice when feeding.

    Q
Would over saturation of Talstar P kill my flowers?
    A

Over-spraying of Talstar P (Talstar One) should not harm most flowers. It is always best to apply in the cooler times of the day. You should also avoid spraying the flowers directly to have the least impact on beneficial pollinators in the area.

  • Asked by Kyle from Texas

    Q
What is the dilution rate for Talstar P when treating for chinch bugs? How often should this treatment be done?
It is obviously for St Augustine lawn. I am trying to find the retreatment interval allowed per label but am not seeing it. Would you be able to let me know? Historically, I have found it necessary to treat these tough bugs twice.
    A

When treating for chinch bugs with Talstar P, it is recommended that you do a second treatment 21-30 days after the first treatment. You will use 1 fl. oz. of Talstar P per gallon of water. This will treat 1000 square feet. Be sure to water the product in at least 0.5 inches after it has been applied.

    Q
Should I use Talstar or Termidor for carpenter ants?
I have carpenter ants on the exterior of my house. I've seen them come out from under the cedar shake. Which product would be best to get red of these and how long does each product last? How long before rain should these products be applied?
    A

Termidor SC around the perimeter of the home would be better than Talstar P.  Termidor will have transfer effect so can help to eliminate the entire colony whereas Talstar P will only kill the ants that contact a treated surface.  It can be applied twice a year or four times a year outside depending on the rate. This link can explain.

  • Asked by Harold from Linden, Michigan
    04/06/2017
    Q
Does a mosquito spray, like Talstar P, affect the honey bee once it dries?
Talstar, Tekko Pro, and BTI, do these or similar chemicals affect the honey bee if sprayed on the flowers or if over spray landed on the flowers they use?
    A

Some insecticides, like Talstar P, can be harmful to beneficial insects such as honey bees. Per Talstar P's label, Talstar "is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment of residues on blooming crops or weeds", so we wouldn't recommend spraying while bees are present or on blooms that bees can later land on. Tekko Pro IGR is just a growth regulator not an insecticide so as long as it's used as directed, it shouldn't harm beneficials. As far as BTI, if you're referring to the BTI Mosquito Dunks, that product is a larvacide and it only goes in water retention sites. If you meant Monterey B.T. Insecticide, the product "has no effect on birds, earthworms or beneficial insects such as honeybees and ladybugs, when used as directed." We recommend to always read the label of the product you decide to use to know how to use it properly and to check how it can affect beneficial insects.

    Q
I'm about to use Talstar P for bagworms. If half of an evergreen tree has turned brown will it survive after the bagworms are eliminated?
    A

We apologize, but there is no way we can say for sure if the tree will survive.  We recommend that you contact a local arborist with your cooperative extension office to determine the extent of the damage of the tree.  Talstar is labeled for a foliar spray starting in April through June.

    Bagworm recommendations:

It is important to start control methods before a major infestation occurs. Once the bagworms have matured and have formed the "bag" most chemical control methods will no longer work.

You can manually control bagworms by simply plucking them off of the infested trees and dropping them into a bucket of soapy water or squishing them.  This control method is most useful during fall, winter and early spring, before the eggs inside the bag have hatched.

Chemical control may be achieved when the larvae are small and just emerging from the over-wintering bag.  Use a concentrated liquid insecticide such as Talstar or Tempo. Foliage should be thoroughly wetted with the insecticide spray in order to achieve thorough coverage.  When doing an insecticide treatment, timing is key. To find out the correct time of year to treat for bagworms in your region contact you local Cooperative Extension office. These offices can prove to be invaluable when treating for insect pests.

  • Asked by Jay from Kansas City, Mo

    Q
What is the best all around pesticide for home barrier treatment?
I have general little black ants, spiders, wasps, and many other insects. No major infestations that I know of, but now that spring is here we are seeing a lot more insects. What is the best wide range and long lasting insecticide? I read Talstar, Termidor, Temprid, Bifen, etc. and it is confusing as to which is the best product for general pest control. Also, is there one better for inside and one better for outside? Thanks
    A

We typically recommend Talstar P for general home pest control.  It is labeled for over 75 different pests, so it will work for all of the ones you mentioned as well as many others.  It can be used indoor and outdoors, and it is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and won't break down easily with rainfall.  You will want to treat every 90 days indoors, and every 30 days outdoors.  Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
    I use a Talstar/Nyguard mixture. Can this hurt plants/shrubs/trees?
I spray 1 oz per gallon of Talstar and 9ml of Nyguard for 4 gallons of water. I want to make sure I won't hurt Japanese Maple trees or any trees for that matter. Thank you.
    A

Talstar P is known for being super gentle on plants and when it and Nyguard IGR are used as directed should not harm plants.  Avoid spraying during the heat of the day to prevent burn.

    Q
How to use Talstar P on potted plants indoors?
    A

Talstar P (Talstar One) is diluted with water and then poured onto the soil and sprayed onto the plant itself. We recommend starting with letting the soil dry out between watering as this offers the fastest control in most cases. Please provide the targeted pest for additional tips on treatment.

    Q
Should I spray the outside of the house as recommended with Talstar P in conjunction with another product for mosquitoes?
Or is Talstar P enough? I don't live close to water, but the mosquitoes are horrible.
    A
Talstar P is a recommended product for mosquito control. You will need to spray more than just the outside of your home though. You will need to spray the underside of the leaves on trees and bushes nearby as that is where the mosquitoes spend the heat of the day. We have also had good reviews from people who sprayed a 2 foot band around the perimeter of their property.

    Q
What is the best way to get rid of stink bugs?
We are located in southeast Pennsylvania, and we have noticed a huge increase in stink bugs. According to some University Entomology sites I have visited, they all state the best method is sealing the building to keep them outside. The area has garden style apartments with lots of grass, trees, shrubbery and mulch around the buildings, all conducive to this type of pest, along with many others such as centipedes. The sites basically state once they are inside a building, the best way to get rid of them is to vacuum them, and obviously not smash them. Is there not something out there that can be sprayed inside that would have a residual effect?
    A
There are many products on the market that have a long lasting residual. Unfortunately, all of them will only have very limited results. Stink bugs move into structures to overwinter. They usually squeeze into wall voids, false ceilings, attics and other areas that are inaccessible to people and insecticides. As the heat kicks on in the house, the stink bugs warm up and start becoming active and emerge from hiding, driving residents nuts. Because most folks usually have no idea where the bugs are harboring you can only treat around baseboards, door frames and window frames and hope the insects will emerge where you have sprayed. After they contact the treated areas, it can take several hours for them to die. It is still worth spraying now to get rid of some of the bugs, but you will keep seeing them until spring when they will emerge en masse and leave the building. They do not eat, mate or lay eggs while indoors so need to worry about any damage or future baby stink bugs. This year you can be proactive by stopping these pests before they move in for the winter. You can use Talstar P outdoors around your door frames, window frames, vents, eaves, around the bottom of your foundation, and any other crack or crevice where an insect could gain entry, once a month August-November.
