    Q
Best treatment for small Black ants and centipedes?
I have children and a dog, what would you recommend for small black ants and centipedes? Thank you!
    A
We would recommend our most popular insecticide, Talstar.  It is a very safe product to use around children and pets and is widely used by professional companies every day in thousands of homes across the country.  It is odorless, can be used indoors and outdoors and it is labeled for over 80 different insects.  You would apply it using a one gallon hand pump sprayer

    Q
What product will safely kill caterpillars inside the home, as well as other common household pests all in 1?
I live in NC and we've had a lot of rain lately; not sure if that has anything to do with it, but more and more I have noticed caterpillars crawling across my carpet in various parts of the house. In addition, which product would be best to kill these caterpillars and other pests outside the home and in the lawn?
    A
Talstar P is our most popular general pest control product. Talstar P is labeled for caterpillars and is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and won't break down easily with rainfall.

    Q
Do you have a product like Talstar P that can be shipped to New York for Japanese beetle control?
I HATE Japanese beetles - I have a routine of swearing, hand-plucking, and stomping! That is NOT working for the hundreds and hundreds that we have. I was excited to see you recommend your Talstar and then....shot down when I see you can't sell it to me in New York - any other ideas? We and three neighbors have beetle bags that are filling up weekly
    A

Unfortunately, there is not another product that is comparable to Talstar P for Japanese Beetles that can be shipped to New York. We recommend that you contact your local cooperative extension office for recommendations.

    Q
How can I control gnats in my yard?
We sit outside and they bite all over, and I tried yard guard and it works some.
    A
There are a few ways to keep the number of gnats down. You can invest in a misting system that periodically sprays a pyrethrin insecticide in your yard. This system is a lot like a sprinkler system. We do not carry the actual mister system but we do carry the insecticide that is used in it called Riptide. If you want to get something you can just spray you can try Talstar P. Gnats that land on the treated areas will be eliminated. Talstar P will not repel the gnats from the area nor will it kill the gnats that do not land on the treated areas.

    Q
Do you recommend any pest control for wood mulch around a play set?
We have put up a play set (swings, slide, sand box), and we have put wood mulch around it as a cushion for the play set. I have been told that ants (and other undesired bugs) make this their home. Is there something I can use that is kid friendly (my daughter is old enough not to eat the wood chips) if any gets on her hands or feet?
    A
You can spray around the perimeter of the play area with Talstar P. Talstar P has a long residual, so it keeps on killing pests for up to three months after you have sprayed it. Plus, Talstar P is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and will not break down easily with rainfall. We do not recommend spraying any insecticides directly on areas where children will be coming in skin contact on a regular basis.

    Q
Is Talstar P safe if you have dogs and cats?
    A
Talstar P is safe to use around animals. As long as they are out of the area while you are spraying, they can return as soon as the area is dry. Talstar P is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and will not break down easily with rainfall.

    Q
How do you apply Talstar P for flea problem in house? The fleas are in the carpet.
    A
Talstar P cannot be used as a broadcast spray indoors, so it would not be a good choice for indoor flea control. We recommend you use Ultracide for indoor flea control. It is our recommendation and industry standard that you vacuum immediately before the application of Ultracide and every day or every other day after the application for the next two weeks. Vacuums can physically remove a decent percentage of flea eggs that are in the carpet, along with much of the organic crud that the flea larvae feed on. A critical part of the diet of the larva is dried blood, present there as fecal material from the fleas that are on the pets. Wherever the pets spend time they will shed the fecal matter and the eggs, so it is extremely important that you focus on these potential hot spots where the pets sleep. A vacuum also will remove a small percentage of larvae, but the larva is pretty tenacious, and will wrap around the carpet fibers down there at the base of the pile, and hold on for dear life as the vacuum passes by. The pupa is even tougher to physically remove, for it uses fibers as part of its "cocoon". But, the vacuum will stimulate the flea adults still in their pupa form to quickly emerge as the adult, and at this point perhaps be sucked up in the vacuum. Even if they are not removed by the vacuum, at least they now are exposed and susceptible to your treatment.   After two weeks most infestations require that you do a second application of the Ultracide and continue with the vacuuming.

    Q
What is the usage rate of Talstar P for bird mites?
I am spraying indoors. My condo has 700 sq. feet. How often should I spray?
    A

Talstar is not actually labeled for bird mites, so there is no actual guideline for applying it for this pest.  Onslaught would be a better option and is labeled for mites in general and customers have mentioned success with it.

    Q
Can Cy-Kick CS be mixed with Talstar P for mosquito control?
If so how much of each product per gallon to treat 1000 sqft? If not Talstar what can be mixed for quick knockdown and at what rate/gallon/1000sqft
    A
No. Cy-Kick CS and Talstar P are both synthetic pyrethroids and there would be no valid reason to mix them together. We recommend that you stick with the Talstar P. Use 1 fl oz of Talstar P per gallon of water to treat a 1,000 sq ft area for the best knockdown and the longest residual. If you want a faster knockdown than the Talstar P alone can provide you can add 1 oz ExciteR to the Talstar/water mixture. ExciteR is a pyrethrin product which provides a super fast knockdown but no residual.

    Q
What are the two tops to the Talstar P bottle for?
On Talstar P has 2 outlets, how come, what do I do with 2 outlets.
    A
Most professional pest control products come in a bottle with a built in measuring device.  The top to the left has a measuring reservoir that measures in 1/2 and 1 ounce increments so you can easily mix the product with water.  The right hand side is just a normal top that will allow all of the product to come out.  Most people never open the right hand side though because most people just use an ounce at a time.

    Q
Which is the best product to control centipedes?
They come in through windows. I hate them.
    A
Talstar P would be a good choice to use around the inside and outside of your home to eliminate centipedes. Indoors you can apply Talstar P to door frames, window frames, places where utilities enter into the structure, and any other place where the insects can gain entry. Outdoors you should apply the product to door frames, window frames, places where utilities enter into the structure, around the bottom of the foundation and out onto the ground directly around the foundation. You can also limit favorable conditions that the centipedes need to thrive.

    Remove Favorabe Conditions

    • Fix leaky faucets or pipes and dry up wet or damp areas where centipedes thrive
    • Remove outdoor harborages near the home that hold moisture (compost, wood, or leaf piles, etc).
    • Store firewood off the ground at least 20 feet away from the home
    • Water your lawn in the morning so that it will be dry by afternoon
    • Do not over mulch flower beds, since soggy mulch is an ideal harborage for centipedes

    Q
What do you recommend for general pest control around a 6 unit condo building in FL?
We would like to do our own exterminating and not sure where to begin, what solution to use or what type of sprayer to use. Our present exterminator is too loose with the sprayer. I don't like the idea that all things inside need to be sprayed though I don't want pests bothering our tenants. Please advise, thanks!
    A

Talstar P is one of our most popular insecticide concentrates and should do a great job for you. Talstar is best applied with a sprayer. Mix 1/2 or 1 oz. of Talstar P in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the structure, approx. 3 feet up the side of the structure and 2 feet out from the structure. Also spray entry points into the structure such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. We sell several high quality sprayers which will last for years when maintained properly. Our most popular professional sprayer is the B&G 1 Gallon Sprayer + 18-inch wand - N124-S-18 and our most popular consumer sprayer is the Chapin Premier 1 Gallon 21220. We also have a great article called Apartment Pest Control for Building Owners that will explain step by step how you can keep pests out with a minimum of chemicals.

    Q
Can Talstar P be used to control night crawlers? I would really like to exterminate them.
    A
Talstar P is not labeled to control any type of earthworm and we are not sure if it would be effective for this use. You will be hard pressed to find any product on the market that is labeled to get rid of night crawlers as they are considered a beneficial creature.

    Q
How can I control biting gnats in my yard?
I purchased Riptide and Talstar. I am hoping that these will help control them a little bit so that I can feel comfortable out in my back yard. Thanks for your help
    A
You purchased the exact products that we would have recommended. Spray Talstar P and Riptide on trees, shrubs and bushes paying special attention to the underside of the leaves. You can also spray your lawn to help control the low flying gnats that tend to land there. Talstar P will give a long lasting residual while the Riptide will give you a fast knockdown. You can use both products in the same area to get both a fast knock down and a long lasting residual. It is best to treat in the early morning or the late evening when these pests are most active.

Can I apply Talstar P around the house and windows using a garden hose sprayer? It seems as if it would be easier and faster than using the hand held sprayer.
    A
You can apply Talstar P using a hose end sprayer. Be sure your hose end sprayer can be calibrated to the correct usage rate for the pest and area you want to treat. We do carry the Chapin Hose End Sprayer 6005 which can be calibrated for any usage rate listed on the Talstar P product label.

Amount Talstar P (Talstar One) necessary for doing a termite block?
    A
According to the Talstar product label you will need to use 1 oz of Talster per gallon of water and then apply at the rate of 4 gallons of dilution per 10 linear feet of trench. You will need to calculate how many linear feet you have around the structure you wish to treat to find out how much Talstar you will need to purchase. Please take a few minutes to read over our termite article How to do a Termite Treatment so you will have a better understanding of what may be required for the treatment process.

When applying Talstar P (Talstar One) do I need to wear a mask?
If I am using a backpack mister, i.e. the Solo 451, do I need to wear a mask when spraying Talstar? Thanks, Stew
    A
According to the Talstar P product label "all pesticide handlers must wear a respiratory protection device when working in a non-ventilated space." Respiratory devices are not required for well ventilated spaces or outdoor applications. The Talstar P product label also says "all applicators should wear longsleeved shirt and long pants, socks, shoes and chemical-resistant gloves."
