Talstar P and Tempo SC Ultra are very good products for gnat control. The biggest difference between them is that they have two different active ingredients. They are both great insecticides and can be alternated so that there is no pest resistance built up. Be sure to inspect the lawn for any ways to control moisture build-up such as eliminating standing water and trimming trees and shrubs to allow moist soil to dry.
For best results, Talstar P should be applied when temperatures are between 40-85 degrees F. If your temps are higher than that during the day, apply in the early morning or evening.
No, Talstar P (Talstar One) is not labeled for use around lakes and/or water ways, as it would be harm to the marine life. You would need to use Essentria IC3 for that type of application.
Talstar will kill any wasp, bee, or hornet that comes into contact with a treated area. Keep in mind that this is not a contact kill product, so it can take up to 24 hours for an insect to die after contacting a treated surface. You can also use a product like Wasp Freeze as a contact kill. If you know where any of the nests are located, you can use Wasp Freeze to treat those directly as well. It is best to apply any insecticides in the early morning or evening when the wasps/bees/hornets are least active.
Talstar P (Talstar One) alone is good for perimeter treatment of general pests. For some pests you would benefit from mixing an IGR like Nyguard IGR with it. This prevents young insects (such as fleas, roaches, mosquitoes) from maturing into reproducing adults.

The Talstar manufacturer recommends that you wait one year before planting edible plants in a treated area or that you remove and replace the soil for immediate planting.
