We would suggest treating the potted plant with Talstar P for ant control. Mix rate would be 0.5 to 1.0 fl oz per gallon of water. You can treat the soil and foliage of the plant.
We do not recommend using Talstar P for powderpost beetles. The label does allow for this application in voids and galleries of damaged wood, but this would be a difficult applciation. Our most popular treatment for this pest is using Boracare on raw wood that is infested. If you need to treat finished wood such as wooden floors, then you would either need to strip the wood to treat it, or spot treat the individual holes using Jecta, which is a ready-to-use formulation of Boracare. We have more tips in our Treatment Guide for this pest here.
Talstar P is labeled to treat for termites and lasts for about 5 years in the ground and works as a repellent, killing only those insects that come into contact with the treated area. A better option for subterranean termites non repellent termiticide such as Termidor SC or Dominion 2L. Termidor will last up to to 10 years in the soil and Dominion 2L will last 5-7 years. Non repellents work slower but much more effectively when treating a termite colony as they are able to be transferred thorought the entire colony therefore eventually elimating the colony. Talstar P will only repel the termites, not kill the entire colony.
Talstar P Professional Insecticide needs to be watered in for some pests but not all. Please review the product label for complete application information depending on your target pest.
Talstar P Professional Insecticide is a great safe product for general pest control both in and around the home. It dries clear, has no odor, is non-staining and non-irritating and can be used on lawns, bushes, ornamentals, trees and around the foundation of the home, as well as entry points like windows and doors. It will control over 100 different insects, including mosquitoes, flies, and spiders. It will typically last 30-90 days outdoors and at least 90 indoors along baseboards and cracks and crevices. Its safe for children and pets once dry and is very cost effective.
Yes, Talstar P is toxic to honey bees. We recommend to avoid blooming plants and/or treat early in the morning or late in the evening when beneficial insects are not active.
Neither ExciteR or Talstar are true repellents to keep insects away. The area will only be slightly repellent for maybe a day after an application with these. Talstar is designed more to provide a long residual to continue to kill those insects that contact a treated area. Mosquito Barrier is an option that can be repellent for up to 24 hours or up to 30 days.
Talstar P is not labeled to treat for grubs. Dylox 6.2 would be an excellent alternative when treating for grubs that are actively feeding. Merit Granules or Dominion 2L also work well for grubs. We do have several products that are specifically labeled for grub worms on our website: Grub Worm Control. We also recommend that you contact your local cooperative extension office and inquire about the best time to start treatments for grubs in your region.
Since Talstar P is labeled for use indoors as a crack and crevice spray, you could potentially use it to spot treat in a drop ceiling, however this product is not labeled for carpet beetles. We recommend adding an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) when treating for carpet beetles, such as NyGuard IGR. You could also use a ready-to-use product like NyGuard Plus which has both an insecticide and an IGR in one product. A better choice for use in the drop ceiling may be an insecticide dust, though, since it is a dry product that would not damage the tiles, and a dust lasts much longer than a spray in void spaces like a drop ceiling. Delta Dust can be used in a drop ceiling for carpet beetles and other crawling insect pests there. Or you may consider our Carpet Beetle Control Kit which includes the NyGuard Plus, CimeXa Dust, and glue traps.
Be sure that you have located and removed the source of the infestation as well. We have more tips in our Carpet Beetle Treatment Guide here.
Yes, Talstar P Professional Insecticide is a great product for chinch bugs. Chinch bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Chinch bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher applications rates will be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the summer. It may also be necessary to remove the thatch layer if it exceeds 1 inch in thickness to allow the Talstar to penetrate down to the soil. When treating for chinch bugs it is recommended that you do a second treatment 21-30 days after the first treatment. You will use 1 fl. oz. of product per gallon of water. This will treat 1000 square feet. Be sure to water the product in at least 0.5 inches after it has been applied.
It is not usually required to use a surfactant with Talstar P but adding one will increase the effectiveness and help it stick to waxy leaves better. The Hi-Yield Spreader Sticker would be a great choice.
Yes, although Talstar P Professional Insecticide will kill fleas, you still need to incorporate an IGR like Tekko Pro to break down the reproductive cycle. You can apply both at the same time.
Talstar P Professional Insecticide cannot be applied to linens or fabrics.
Talstar P Professional Insecticide is labeled to be used for beetles as directed on the product label.
Yes, Talstar P is effective for treating clover mites. You will need to mix one ounce to one gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft.
Be sure to apply Talstar P Professional Insecticide on a day with little wind present to avoid drift to unwanted locations/unlisted areas (including on the applicator). We do offer a Basic Safety Kit for protective gear.
Talstar P should not be applied to hogs or horses. It is safe to use around livestock as long as the animals aren’t grazing in the treated areas. After the application, you need to wait until the area is completely dry before letting the animals back onto the non-grazing treated areas.
When using Talstar P Professional Insecticide for ant control, mix 1 fl oz per gallon of water, locate and treat ant nests, and trails around doors and windows and other places where ants have been observed or are expected to forage. Spray the exterior perimeter foundation 2 to 3 ft up and 2 to 3 ft out from the foundation. For ant control in the lawn, mix at the same 1 fl oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft.
For treating Fire Ants, the best control is obtained by a broadcast application along with mound drenches. Apply broadcast treatments at 0.6 to 1 fluid oz. per 1,000 square feet. Treat mounds by applying 1 fl oz Talstar P Professional per mound in 1 to 2 gallons water by sprinkling the mound until it is wet and treat 3 feet out around the mound. Use the higher volume for mounds larger than 12”. Treat mounds with sufficient force to break their apex and allow the insecticide solution to flow into the ant tunnels. For best results, apply in cool weather (65 - 80?F) or in the early morning or late evening hours.
Please review the Application Directions Ant Control on page 4 of the product label.
Yes, Talstar P Professional Insecticide can be applied to any bushes, shrubs, trees, landscaped areas as well as flowering plants. However, you should minimize the spray on the actual flowering plants as you do not want it to expose the product to any bees that help with pollination. It is recommended that you spray when pollinators are not active, either in the early morning or late evening.
