Do Talstar XTRA Granules work to repel wood ticks?

  • Asked by Mark from Pahoa, Hawaii
    06/26/2016
    Q
Is Talstar XTRA Granules a contact kill or bait poison?
It appears to be a contact poison. If so can it be made into a bait poison like Tango, where little fire ants take it to the nest? We have LFAs in trees where a bait is needed.
    A

Talstar XTRA Granules is an insecticide that kills by contact, and it cannot be made into a bait. We do sell many fire ant bait granules. Extinguish Plus and Advion Fire Ant Bait are two of the most popular fire ant baits that we sell.

  • Asked by Gary from New London, Wi

    Q
Will Talstar XTRA Granules treat ticks?
Talstar XTRA is listed under ticks but an answer to a question said it wouldn't control them. This is what we purchased the product to abate. I'm confused.
    A

Talstar XTRA Granules does list ticks on the product label and gives instructions for using it for them.  It would really only be good for the young ticks still in the soil and not those on plants, trees, rocks or other non soil areas, for these applications a liquid product would be recommended.  We have a great Outdoor Flea/Tick Kit that we would recommend using.

  • Asked by Elaine from Starke Fl

    Q
what setting do you use for a Scotts edge guard dlx when spreading Talstar XTRA granules?
to get rid of mole crickets
    A

The Talstar Xtra bag does not specifically list setting for the Scotts Edge Guard DLX.  You would want to calibrate your spreader for the product for your target pest. Here are instructions on how to calibrate your spreader.

Almost all fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, etc have treatments in amounts of so much product per 1000 square feet.  So if you can figure out what your walking speed is then you know anytime you apply any product that calls for so much of it per 1000 square feet, you always set your spreader on this setting.  You can calibrate this by marking off a 1000 square foot (10 x 100) area and placing the required amount of product in pounds in the spreader.  Start with a low setting and start walking your marked off area at a normal pace.  You can adjust as you go and find the basic setting for you to apply the product over a 1000 square feet.

For mole crickets the rate to use is 2.3 to 4.6 Lbs/1000 sq ft

    Q
What setting on a Scott's spreader would you use to apply Talstar XTRA Granules?
    A

The spreader settings Talstar XTRA Granules will vary on the insects you are treating and the rate (low, mid or high rate) Please refer to the product label to view the Spreader Settings Table for setting recommendations on the most common spreaders. The table only lists the Scotts SpeedyGreen 2000 and the Scotts Handy Green II Spreader so if you have a different model spreader, we would suggest contacting Scotts at 888-270-3714 for assistance.

    Q
What can I put out to control mole crickets?
    A

A great product to treat your lawn for mole crickets is Talstar XTRA Granules. When the mole crickets are small and young, they are much easier to control, but there will be little to no visible damage at this time. When damage is visible, usually in the spring, mole crickets are much larger and robust, which makes them harder to control. The best time to treat for moles crickets will be in the early life stages, when they are the most vulnerable. Take a look at our guide on How To Get Rid of Mole Crickets for lots of helpful information.

  • Asked by Peter from Woodbridge,va
    11/01/2018
    Q
Does Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide work to prevent termites in yard and around house if spread every 2 to 3 months?
    A

No, Talstar Xtra Granules would not be a good option when treating for termites.  Talstar Xtra Granules are applied to the surface of the ground and are really only meant for treating insects that walk across the ground.  Termites enter the home from underground and never make it to the surface of the ground.  Therefore, they never come into contact with the product on the surface.  Please take a look at our "How to do a Termite Treatment" article, which explains exactly how to treat for termites just like a professional company would.

  • Asked by Marion from Valdosta, Ga. 31602

    Q
Will Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide kill earthworms and grubs?
    A

Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide is not labeled to kill grubs or earthworms. There are no products on the market in the USA that are labeled for earthworms as they are largely beneficial creatures, however, this product could harm beneficial insects that come in contact with treated areas. We do have several products that are specifically labeled for grub worms on our website: Grub Worm Control. We also recommend that you contact your local cooperative extension office and inquire about the best time to start treatments for grubs in your region.
