In addition to its breakthrough active ingredient, Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide has been formulated with the same long-lasting residual of Talstar PL Granular Insecticide, for the highly dependable control professionals have come to expect. While fire ants and other pests can be gone in as little as minutes, the residual protection of Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide is proven to remain effective for at least four months.

    Just OK

    By Bubba on 10/16/2010

This product worked great... at first. Applied it correctly and it was like a nuclear bomb went off - no ants, no crickets, no anything. However, a week or so went by and the ants were back. Why? Probably because of local control. I have lots of sandy spots and those don't take to the poison well? I find the liquid talstar HARDER to apply, but it works better in all conditions. For some reason the granular works well for yards and areas with no sand, etc. The granules are also hard to spread in landscape beds. Talstar as a whole is the BEST so maybe the answer is to buy granular for the grassy areas that are usually large and hard to cover with spray and then buy the spray for the landscaping beds and sandy spots in your lawn. Either way BE CAREFUL this stuff is so toxic that in minutes lizards, crickets, and ants start to flee their hiding places and you'll find them everywhere... dead! 5 stars for the liquid Talstar for sure, 4 stars for Talstar XTRA because despite the fact it has pretty ant(s) on the packaging it is not that great for ant(s) and may not work around planting beds, near sidewalks, and/or empty patches in lawns.

    Fire Ants

    By Roscoe on 04/09/2012

    Verified Purchase

We were getting ready to have a big birthday party for the Grandson and found too many fire ants to take the chance. We used the Talstar Xtra on the recomendation of a friend who is in the pest control business. We spread 50 pounds with the lawn spreader and didn't see one ANT at the party. Great product, Thanks.

Product is on the expensive side but works great, I have not seen an ant on my lawn since it was applied 2 weeks ago, it also seems to have killed the chinch bugs as I am seeing a change of the bald spots on my lawn.

    Talstar Granules

    By Robert on 04/14/2012

    Verified Purchase

I put the granules out around the shrubbery and foundation of the house according to directions. I used the Talstar spray a month ago on the walls of the house. My roach problem has almost been elimintated. The Roaches I do see don't feel so good. Along with most other houses in Macon, last week we had our yearly infestation of redbugs crawling everywhere - except where that I had sprayed with Talstar. Good stuff and I like the lack of odor and ease of use. Make certain you have a good spreader.

Q
How would you treat mounds in a horse pasture with Talstar XTRA?
A

According to the manufacturer, Talstar cannot be used in horse pastures for any purpose.

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait would be a better choice for you. Extinguish plus can be used on pasture land and there are no grazing restrictions for companion animals. Below you will see the grazing info available on the Extinguish Plus product label. Extinguish Plus combines the power of hydramethylnon with an insect growth regulator (IGR) to kill fire ant workers and prevent queens from laying fertile eggs. The result is complete fire ant colony control. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is best used in the spring or early fall, or whenever fire ants are active. The ants will feed off Extinuish Plus and spread the bait throughout the entire colony, halting the infestation within weeks. Extinguish Fire Ant Bait can be used indoors and outdoors on lawns, pasture land, rangeland, landscaped areas, and golf courses.

EXTINGUISH PLUS may be applied to grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) for the control of fire ants
only in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas,
Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New
Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Use on grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) in states other than those
listed is unlawful. See Outdoor Use table for
application directions. Do not exceed 8 pounds per
acre per year or more than 4 times a year, with a
minimum re-treatment interval of 90 days. Do not bale
and cut treated pastures and rangelands for 7 days
following application. These cutting and baling hay
restrictions for pasture and rangeland do not apply
when the treated pasture and rangeland is used solely
to support COMPANION ANIMALS (e.g., horses,
llamas, etc.). Companion animals grazed on treated
areas cannot be used for food or feed. EXTINGUISH®
PLUS may be used on uncultivated, agricultural, nonfood
crop and non-agricultural land.

Q
I have purchased 6 bags of Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide and still have mole crickets.

The little monsters seem to be multiplying!

A

When using Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide to treat for mole crickets, it’s very important to treat them at the correct time of the year.  Controlling mole crickets soon after they hatch will offer the fastest knockdown of the current population and help avoid damage later in the year.  Check areas in your lawn in the spring for damage cause by mole crickets.  This is usually in places under and around trees, under and around bushes, around decks and patios, areas were leaf debris has collected, etc.  Even though eggs hatch in the summer, damage will not become visible until the following spring, after the immature mole crickets have developed and grown.  Applying your insecticide in the spring, can begin to treat those that are hatching in the summer.  When treating for mole crickets, you should be using 2.3-4.6 pounds per 1000 sq ft.   Be sure that you’re watering in your Talstar XTRA with at at least a half inch of water to ensure it’s moving past the surface of the soil and down into the top layer.  The product label has specific instructions regarding mole crickets as follows:

Mole Cricket adults: Achieving acceptable control of adult mole crickets is difficult because preferred grass areas are subject to continuous invasion during the early spring by this extremely active stage. Applications should be made as late in the day as possible and should be watered in with up to 0.5 inches of water immediately after treatment. If the soil is not moist, then it is important to irrigate before application to bring the mole crickets closer to the soil surface where contact with the insecticide will be maximized. Grass areas that receive pressure from adult mole crickets should be treated at peak egg hatch to ensure optimum control of subsequent nymph populations (see below). Mole Cricket nymphs: Grass areas that received intense adult mole cricket pressure in the spring should be treated immediately prior to peak egg hatch. Optimal control is achieved at this time because young nymphs are more susceptible to insecticides and they are located near the soil surface where the insecticide is most concentrated. Control of larger, more damaging, nymphs later in the year may require both higher application rates and more frequent applications to maintain acceptable control. Applications should be made as late in the day as possible and should be watered in with up to 0.5 inches of water immediately after treatment. If the soil is not moist, then it is important to irrigate before application to bring the mole crickets closer to the soil surface where contact with the insecticide will be maximized.
