    Q
How long does Tenacity Herbicide remain in soil, and when is it safe to plant vegetables in a previously treated area?
I do not currently have a garden in my yard but would like to start one in the future. In the meantime, I would like to use Tenacity to control several weeds that have invaded my entire lawn. I'm wondering how long I would need to wait after application of Tenacity, both as a pre- and post-emergent, before it is safe to start growing vegetables in an area that has been previously sprayed with Tenacity.
    A

You will need to wait one year after Tenacity is used in a given area before you can plant edible vegetation in that area.

    Q
Can I apply Tenacity after using a Weed and Feed(Scotts turf builder halts)?
    A

Yes, you could potentially apply Tenacity Herbicide after using a weed and feed product, but you should wait about 2 weeks between applications so that you do do not put too much stress on the grass at one time.

    Q
I forgot to add the non ionic surfactant in the mix of Tenacity Herbicide when I applied to my lawn. I immediately came back and over sprayed with the non ionic surfactant. Will this be effective for post emergent control of listed weeds?
    A

Since a surfactant is designed to reduce water tension during spraying, applying it separately is unlikely to improve results. If you were applying the Tenacity as a pre-emergent herbicide, then there should not be any detriment to the application. If you were applying as a post-emergent, then you may need to reapply the product in 2-3 weeks as a spot treatment for the target weeds.

    Q
Can Tenacity Herbicide be applied at the same time as overseeding with Tall Fescue seed in the spring? I planned on using Tenacity along with a surfactant while new tall fescue seed is down before it has germinated to stay on top of weeds.
    A

Tenacity Herbicide is best applied at the same time as when you overseed for preemergent control of weeds. If you have already overseeded, then it is best to wait until after the 2nd mowing or 30 days (whichever is longer) to apply Tenacity with a Non Ionic Surfactant for post emergent control of weeds.

    Q
Will Tenacity Herbicide kill my Irises if sprayed on them?
    A

We would not recommend Tenacity Herbicide be applied to flower beds and ornamental plants. According to the product label: “Avoid over-spray or drift of spray applications onto ornamentals or flower beds and gardens. Roses and daylilies are sensitive plant species. Avoid applications over the top of exposed roots of trees and ornamentals."

    Q
I purchased a 4 step lawn care program for my 10,000 sq ft lawn. Can you tell me what order should I apply? The first step of the program I will be applying is a 18-0-3 w/ Dimension pre-emergent control with spring fertilizer, Can or should I apply Tenacity before or after applying 18-0-3 w Dimension and should I overseed before or after?
My lawn back yard lawn is really bad this year. I'm in Southeast Massachusetts. the ground temp now is 50
    A

You can apply Tenacity as a pre-emergent anytime before seeding a cool-season lawn. If you are planning to overseed this spring, however, you cannot apply a product that has Dimension in it before seeding or until the new grass is well established (Dimension will prevent the turfgrass seeds from germinating). We would recommend that you aerate before applying any kind of pre-emergent so that you do not disturb your soil applications. Please review our Cool Season Lawn Care Schedule and Guide for more information.

    Q
Can Tenacity Herbicide be mixed with Weed-Out?
    A

Normally it is fine to mix two herbicides like this together.  It is always recommended to do a small jar test first just to make sure they combine well and there is no clumping or separating.  You will want to follow the label instructions for both products on tank mixing or how to do a compatibility test.

    Q
My grass turned white after applying Tenacity Herbicide to the weeds. Will my grass recover?
    A

Yes, the whitening of the target weeds and sometimes the turfgrass is normal per the manufacturer. Tenacity Herbicide is labeled to be used on Kentucky Bluegrass, Centipedegrass, Buffalograss, Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, & Fine Fescue. It is not labeled for Bermudagrass or Centipede lawns and can cause turf injury. The whitening you see is the active ingredient working its way into the weeds/grass which causes the loss of chlorophyll followed by the weeds dying off within 1-3 weeks..If using on cool season turf, you can reseed those damaged areas if needed.

Tenacity Herbicide is applied at 5oz to 8oz per acre (depending on the turf type) or for spot treatments, 2 tsp + 3 tsp Non Ionic Surfactant per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft. Please refer to the product label for the mix rate and turf type you have.

    Q
How long after applying Tenacity Herbicide do I need to wait before I can plant new plants in a garden bed?
    A

Per the manufacturer, you will need to wait 18 months after the last application of Tenacity Herbicide to plant anything other than turfgrass. They also advise that you do not use the grass clippings from treated turf as mulch. Please be sure to review the product label for more information and complete application instructions.

    Q
Planting trees in areas that were sprayed with Tenacity Herbicide
I forgot to mark the boundaries of where I intended to plant some trees, and sprayed the weeds in those areas. I see this note on the label "Do not plant any crop other than turfgrass species for 18 months after the last application of Tenacity or injury may occur." Is injury referring to harm to a person digging a hole and handling the soil or injury if a food crop is planted there and someone later eats that crop. So basically, is it safe for me and for the tree, to dig a hole and plant a tree in an area sprayed with Tenacity?
    A

Per the manufacturer, the 18 month waiting period after an application of Tenacity Herbicide applies to food crops but there are some trees that can be sensitive as well. Digging a hole where Tenacity was applied should not have much active ingredient residue, especially if the sod/grass is removed to plant the tree.  Waiting 3-6 months after application would be acceptable.

    Q
If Trimec Broadleaf herbicide has been applied 10 days ago, when can I apply Tenacity Herbicide as a post emergent for crabgrass control in a Tall Fescue lawn?
    A

If not applied around the same time you should wait 1 week to apply another herbicide. Tenacity Herbicide when mixed with a non ionic surfactant will control crabgrass up to the 4 tiller leaf state only and is best applied when it just emerges.  Drive XLR8 is actually the top product for crabgrass and can kill it best when it just emerges or after it has fully matured just not as good during the 2-4 tiller (middle) state. A methylated seed oil surfactant is also recommended for best results with Drive XLR8. Which you use can depend on the tiller stage of the crabgrass but Drive is usually the go to for post emergent control of crabgrass.

    Q
Wanting to treat poa annua I am noticing in my lawn. If I were to apply Tenacity now in April and do a 2nd application a few weeks later followed by treating with propiconazole in May and then applying Dimension 2 EW around Memorial Day, would this injure my lawn? I am just not sure about the timing of using all 3 of these.
    A

Tenacity Herbicide can be tank mixed with other herbicides, fungicides and insecticides when following the tank mixing instructions listed on the product label. We suggest doing a compatibility test in a small mason jar first to ensure the products mix thoroughly without clumping or separation.

  • Asked by Patrick from Lake Odessa

    Q
How soon after applying Tenacity Herbicide can I overseed?
    A

Tenacity Herbicide is one of the few products that can be applied at seeding, prior to seeding, or just after seeding of new grasses to help prevent and control weeds at the same time. Be sure to check the label for any restrictions to certain turf types as Fine Fescue is more sensitive than other species when using Tenacity at seeding. Be sure to use a Non Ionic Surfactant with the Tenacity when applying for best results.
