    Q
Should I spray Tenacity on Bentgrass before dethatching or after?
My 2,700 sq./ft. backyard is 30% Bentgrass and 70% healthy and thick tall fescue. I want to kill as much Bentgrass as possible and overseed my lawn this fall. The Bentgrass patches I can't even see the soil for the amount of thatch. Should I spray Tenacity @ 3 apps, dethatch, then over seed? Or should I dethatch, spray @ 3 apps, over seed?
    A

In general, we would recommend killing the undesirable plants and clearing out the dead plant debris before dethatching and then reseeding the lawn. Dethatching will be easier and you will get better germination with your new seed when the ground is better prepared for it. You can learn more about these treatments in our Do My Own Lawncare Video Series, too. You can find them on the bottom of our Lawn Care Guides page here.

    Q
    Will Tenacity kill creeping charlie?
    A
Tenacity is labeled to control Ground Ivy "Creeping Charlie" as post emergent control. We highly recommend using a temporary turf colorant like Turf Mark Blue so that you can see where you spray with the Tenacity to avoid overlapping. Tenacity is a great product, but also a very strong product so too much overlapping or mixing the product too strong can cause temporary damage and whitening to your turf around the ground ivy. The color will come back in the lawn after 3-4 weeks but to avoid this potential problem it is best to use a colorant to make sure no overlap occurs. To get optimum results for post emergent control it is recommended you use a Non Ionic Surfactant in your mixture as well. Please make sure that you check the label to verify that it is safe for your type of turfgrass as you did not indicate the kind of lawn you will be applying the product to. Please let us know if you have any questions.

    Q
Is the application rate for a blanket spraying over entire yard the same as spot spraying with Tenacity?
    A

According to the Tenacity product label you will need to mix 1 tsp of product + 3 tsp surfactant with 2 gallons of water for spot treatments. You will not apply more than 5-8 ounces of Tenacity per acre as a broadcast application. Please click on the product label link for mixing and applications according to the type of turfgrass you have.

    Q
Can I spray Tenacity at time of seeding?
When using Tenacity at time of seeding do I first spray the soil then seed or do I seed then treat the area? The exact steps I assume I would take would be: scratch-up the dirt as to loosen so the seed works into the soil, treat the now loosened soil with Tenacity, last step spread the seed. Guessing you don’t want to spray the seed with Tenacity. This should then greatly reduce the weeds in the treated are for about 4 weeks.
    A

Tenacity is an effective herbicide for weed control prior to or during seeding of certain turfgrasses during turf renovation. Please see section on use in New Seedings in the Product Label for complete instructions and limitations for your specific turf type.

  • Asked by Aball from Annapolis, Maryland

    Q
When I am finished using Tenacity Herbicide, how do I dispose of it?
Curious if I dump this down the drain, on the lawn, in a storm drain, or if it needs to go to the dump. I live close to a creek which dumps into a river.
    A

We do always recommend that only mix the amount of Tenacity Herbicide you can use at a time.  To dispose of any remaining you would not pour down any drain, but can use to go over some of the areas you were treating or you can pour into the dirt right next to the foundation of the home to prevent any run off to the nearby creek.

  • Asked by David from Hermitage Tn
    08/05/2019
    Q
Is Tenacity safe to use around ornamental plants and shrubs such as coneflower, hostas, rhododendron?
Crabgrass has infested our ornamental beds which also have sky pencil hollies, black eyed susans, clethra and spirea. Can I safely spray the crabgrass without killing the ornamentals? Thanks.
    A

Tenacity Herbicide should not be used within 3 feet of desirable trees or ornamentals.   If treating actively growing grassy weeds, Fertilome Over The Top II Grass Killer can be used. The manufacturer recommends that you use caution during application because the spray can cause damage if it comes into direct contact with foliage.

  • Asked by Mike from Manchester, Pa
    07/15/2015
    Q
Is Tenacity Herbicide Safe on Spruce Trees?
Can I spray this product as both an herbicide and pre emergent in and around blue spruce ornamental trees (weeds emerging through bottom branches)? If yes, what is a safe application rate?
    A

Tenacity Herbicide  could pose a discoloration if it gets on the bark. You want to try and make the application on a day that is not very windy. According to the Tenacity product label you will need to mix 1/2 tsp of product + 1 1/2 tsp surfactant with 1 gallon of water. Tenacity will also act as a pre emergent for listed weeds.

  • Asked by Maria from Portland, Oregon
    10/12/2014
    Q
How often do I apply Tenacity to healthy lawn to keep the bentgrass out?
I have killed the Bentgrass with Tenacity and reseeded. New grass is now growing in those areas. It is mid-October in NW Oregon. How often should I apply Tenacity to prevent the Bentgrass from coming back?
    A
You can reapply Tenacity Herbicide when the newly germinated turf has been mowed two to three times or four weeks after emergence, which is longer. Repeat applications can be done after two to three weeks for continued post emergent weed control.

  • Asked by Al from Waterford, Michigan
    10/19/2016
    Q
How soon can I reseed after applying Tenacity Herbicide to kill bentgrass?
I applied 3 applications in two-week intervals. The lawn was 80% bentgrass. Is it getting too late in fall to seed?
    A

Per the product label on Tenacity Herbicide, apply at grass seeding or close to seeding for best preformance. If you are not close, meaning within a week of application, then you would need to wait 6-8 weeks to re-seed, As for your questions is it too late ot re-seed, we recommend you contact a master gardener in your area or your Local Extention Office to get more information on that.

  • Asked by Rodolfo from Yakima, Wa
    09/15/2016
    Q
How do I apply Tenacity only to a couple of small Patches of bent grass on my lawn?
How do I apply a small amount. What is the mixture ratio of water and tenacity to cover this small area - both patches are maybe 8 feet square?
    A

According to the Tenacity product label you will need to mix 1 tsp of product + 3 tsp surfactant with 2 gallons of water for spot treatments applied at a rate of 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft. If you can acurrately measure a smaller amount it could be halved to do 500 sq ft but anything smaller would not be recommended.

  • Asked by Jeff from Cincinnati, Ohio
    06/23/2013
    Q
Does Tenacity effect both post and pre-emergent POA/Annual Bluegrass?
I reseeded my lawn and have some POA in spots and I don't want to keep killing and reseeding. I would like to apply a pre-emergent that will break the seed drop germination cycle.
    A
Tenacity is not labeled to control Poa Annua/Annual Bluegrass, it only states that it could cause injury to it if sprayed with tenacity. Since it is not specifically designed to control Poa Annua, a better product choice would be Echelon 4SC. Echelon 4SC is labeled for pre-emergent control of poa annua only. According to the product label Poa annua is a winter annual. Applications of Echelon 4SC Herbicide should be made in August or September to established, non overseeded turf before Poa Annua germinates. Consult your local Cooperative Extension Service for more specific applications timings for your local area since August and September are approximate timings.
