How often do I need to spray around the perimeter of my house with Termidor for carpenter ants?
I have your two kinds of bait and wondering what else to do to prevent carpenter ants from coming back. Your advice and products worked great last year. Just trying to prevent and maintain this year.

Our whole yard, grass and flower bed and along driveway is filled with little brown ants. We have a dog.
Can I spray the entire yard? Sandy soil.

ermidor SC is not allowed to be used anywhere other than around the foundation of the home 1-2 feet up and 1-2 feet out. It cannot be broadcast across yards or flowerbeds for any type of insect control, especially with sandy soils. If you want an insecticide that can be broadcast across the yard for ant and general insect control we would recommend something like Talstar P. Its a great general and broad use insecticide that you mix at the rate of 1oz per gallon of water.

I have a house 1440 square feet, how many bottles of Termidor SC would I need?

You must find out how many lineal feet you have around the outside or your home. Unfortunately, the square footage just will not tell us how much you really have to treat. To find how many lineal feet you have, measure around the front, back and each side of your home. Add up the measurements, and you will have the total lineal feet. Use 4 gallons of finished solution per 10 lineal feet around the house.

For Example: A home with 200 lineal feet around the foundation would require 4 bottles of Termidor SC. Most homes require at least 4 bottles. For Termite control, Termidor SC is mixed at a rate of .80 fl oz. for each gallon of water used and each 20 oz bottle will make 24 gallons of solution and treats 60 lineal feet of trenching.?

Will Termidor SC kill sugar ants?

A

Termidor SC can kill sugar ants when used outside around the perimeter of the home but these are not actually a species of ant. It is just what ants that are looking for a sugar/carb based food are called since they go for sweets. We would suggest using either the Indoor or Outdoor Ant kit depending on where you are seeing activity.

Can you show the math for Termidor dilution?
When I do the math, 0.80 fluid ounces of Termidor per one gallon (128 fl. oz.) of water = 0.80/128.8 = 0.006 = 0.6%, not 0.06%. What am I doing wrong?

A

When diluting Termidor SC with water, you will use 0.8 fluid ounces of the product per 1 gallon of water. There really is no math required for this. You will just measure 0.8 fluid ounces of the product using the measuring reservoir on the bottle. You will then pour that amount of product into 1 gallon of water. When using a 1 gallon sprayer, the idea is to fill the sprayer up half way (1/2 gallon), add the 0.8 ounces of Termidor SC, agitate (or shake up) the chemical, fill the sprayer to 1 gallon, and agitate the chemical again.

If you are using the product for the trenching method for termites, which requires 4 gallons of finished solution for each trench, then there is a little bit of math required. Since 0.8 fluid ounces goes into 1 gallon of water, you will use 3.2 fluid ounces per 4 gallons of water.

Equation:
0.8 x 4 = 3.2

0.8 represents the standard rate of the product.
4 represents the amount of water you are going to dilute the product in.
3.2 represents the total amount of product you will need to use in 4 gallons of water.

Therefore, you are going to dilute 3.2 fluid ounces of Termidor SC in 4 gallons of water. You will then pour the entire 4 gallons of solution (Termidor SC and water) into ONE 10 foot trench. You will need to do this until 4 gallons of solution has been applied to each trench around the entire perimeter of the home.

Is Termidor SC safe to use around kids?
Do I need to wear personal protective equipment when doing this job?

As long as you keep pets/children out of the area while you treat and until the Termidor SC application has had time to completely dry or settle it is safe for pets and people to return and resume normal activity. Typically after 4-6 hours. Please be sure to read the product label to get complete information on the needed personal protective safety gear you will need. In most situations, it is recommended that you wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt, closed toe shoes with socks, chemical resistant gloves and goggles. In areas where ventilation is poor a manufacturer may recommend you wear a mask or a respirator. Is using Termidor SC on the outside of a house with a crawlspace effective?
I am unable to fit in the crawlspace on the part of my house that the termites are using. If I treat just the outside will it be equally as effective?

A

Termidor SC is a great choice for liquid soil treatment since it has a very long soil residual (10 years or more) and great transfer effect. In preventative applications, you would not be required to treat the inside of a crawl space. However, if there are live termites in the crawl space, then you would still need to spot treat that colony to insure control of them. So just treating the exterior of the house is not considered sufficient if there is already an issue in the crawl space.

If you can treat the termites from elsewhere in the house, then you may be able to spot treat the activity using Termidor Foam instead.

Can it be used on oak trees?
Can this be used on live oak trees? I know this question has been asked before. I would disagree that they don't attack live trees. Sure they start on dead limps but they keep on going after the live trees after. The trees are definitely alive though.

A

Termidor SC should only be applied as directed on the label. It does have instructions as a direct spot treat the active nest in the tree by drilling into it and injecting with foam or dilution. Termites do not normally attack live, healthy trees so identifying any issues within the tree that attracted the termites in the first place would be recommended as well. A local arborist or horticulturalist at your local cooperative extension office may be able to assist with this or a local pest control company. Please let us know if you need anything else.

Per the label: Termidor SC targets Termites, Carpenter Ants, Crazy Ants, Argentine Ants and other ant species including crazy rasberry ants (please see the label). Also labeled as an outside perimeter pest control treatment only for the following pests: Asian Beetles, Boxelder Bugs, Pill Bugs, Centipedes, Cockroaches (Australian, Oriental, Smokey Brown), Crickets, Earwigs, Cluster Flies, Millipedes, Silverfish, Spiders, Brown Dog Ticks, Paper Wasps, and Yellow Jackets

Can this product be used effectively with a mister?
I have a backpack mister that I use with Talstar for mosquito control. Can Termidor be used in a mister and have positive results for carpenter ants or does it need to be used in a traditional pump sprayer?

Termidor SC is only labeled to be sprayed for ants outdoors in the following way:
For Control of Ants and other Target Pests: Termidor is mixed at a rate of .80 fl. oz. to one gallon of water in a pump sprayer and sprayed around the outside foundation of the home. For example, you would spray 1 foot up the foundation of your home, and 1 foot out onto the ground. The treatment will last about 4-6 months, and will then need to be reapplied.

I have a Dog. How long after Treatment do I have to Wait until she goes back out in the back Yard?

Termidor SC can only be used on or immediately around the foundation of a structure topically as directed for crawling insects or in a trench and drilled holes for subterranean termite application. Keep pets out of the area during the application and while wet. Once completely dried, it is safe for their return to the area. Drying time can vary.

Can I use Termidor just inside the crawl space and not the exterior?
Have gravel around the exterior perimeter of the home but the interior is dirt crawl space. Can I just apply it to the inside of the crawl space? Do I still need a trench if the crawl space dirt floor is level with the top of the footer?

Yes, you want to treat the crawl space with Termidor SC per product label instructions. On the exterior wall where there may or not be gravel/french drain, you either have to move the gravel and treat the soil below it, and keep a close eye on the home throughout the year to make sure termites don't sneak through the gravel and bypass the soil, or you can use bait stations a few feet from the foundation past the gravel or within it to monitor for activity. You can treat the soil under the gravel in addition to bait stations around the perimeter as well if you would like to do both.

The termite company did a local termite treatment with Termidor around our house.
It was done very close to the apple trees. Can we eat apples from these trees?

A

As long as your fruit tree is not directly sprayed with the Termidor SC or so close to the treatment area that runoff or overspray comes in contact with the fruit, Termidor is safe to use and is not systemic. The general rule of thumb is that you should keep Termidor treatments at least 10 feet away from any edible vegetation and you should discard anything that may be contaminated with a direct spray. I plan on covering the entire perimeter with Termidor SC, as well as slab to foundation drilling. Does this process have to be done at one time?
I received three quotes for termite treatment, all three quoted spot treatment using Termidor SC. I plan on covering the entire perimeter, as well as slab to foundation drilling. Does this process have to be done at one time or can it be carried over several weeks? Thank you!

You definitely do not have to treat all at once. A Termidor treatment can be spread out over a few weekends or whatever time frame you want to. Can I use Termidor for a termite treatment if I have already used a repellent product?
Thank you for the prompt response to my earlier question. We are using Termidor to treat for termites and plan on applying it in a six inch trench as directed. However when we first saw the presence of termites around the foundation we panicked and sprayed an over the counter repellent type of chemical around the foundation about 3 inches below grade (but only on one side of the house- where we saw the termites). Would you still suggest we wait two months to make the Termidor application or perhaps could we simply replace the soil that we remove when digging our six inch trench with fresh soil. Thank you again.

You would handle this situation by either removing a good portion of the soil you treated with the over the counter product and replacing it like you had suggested, or by treating everywhere else but the area you treated. If you are going to try to replace the soil, then make sure you dig down plenty deep and remove all of the soil that may have been contacted by the over the counter product. Don't worry, many homeowners do the same thing and call us when they realize there are better alternatives. It should be fine.

How is Termidor SC applied and when should it be done to be effective against termites?

Termidor SC can be applied anytime through out the year, as long as it is not below freezing temperatures. Termites are active all year round in many parts of the country so anytime is a good time. As far as treatment goes, you should read our "How To Do A Termite Treatment" article which explains how a homeowner should do their own termite treatment just as good as the professionals.
