    Q
We had stumps ground that had been treated with Tordon. Now everything near the area is dying. What now?
We had treated the stumps a year ago with the Tordon.. The stumps were dead so we had them ground out. We left the mulch that was created from the grinding in the hole. The nearby shrubs are now dying and nothing will grow where the stumps were. Is there anything we can do to counteract the effect?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide is a very damaging product to surrounding plants due to it’s active ingredient, Picloram.  Untreated trees/plants can occasionally be affected by root uptake of herbicide through movement into the the topsoil or by excretion of the product from the roots of nearby treated trees.  We recommend contacting the manufacturer Dow AgroSciences at 800-992-5994 for advice on what to do at this time.

  • Asked by Bill from Schuylkill Haven, Pa
    08/16/2019
    Q
Can I use Tordon RTU on a stump that was cut 2 months ago if I drill holes in it? Can I plant grass in the area afterwards?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide is best applied to fresh cut stumps, so you can either make a fresh cut or you can drill new holes and then apply.  Since the active ingredient in Tordon RTU is known to leach into the soil from treated roots and can remain for several years you would need to completely replace any soil in the area before planting anything else.  Untreated trees/plants can occasionally be affected by root uptake of herbicide through movement into the the topsoil or by excretion of the product from the roots of nearby treated trees. Do not apply Tordon RTU within the root zone of desireables unless such injury can be tolerated.

    Q
Can I pour Tordon on pecan tree roots to kill the tree?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide would not be used to treat the roots of the pecan to kill it.  There are instructions on the product label for injecting into the tree, frill or girdle treatment, or treating the cut stump after cutting the tree down (which is usually what is recommended).

  • Asked by Jeannette from Pointe-du-chene
    10/18/2019
    Q
Will Tordon RTU kill a Norwegian maple stem and root system?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide is labeled to control maples in general, though we are not sure if it has been tested specifically on Norwegian maples. Keep in mind that Tordon RTU should not be used on residential properties at all: this product has a very long half-life and can affect other plants near the treatment area for years after application. Please let us know if you need a recommendation for an alternate product.

  • Asked by The from Atlanta, Georgia
    11/24/2019
    Q
Should we be concerned that other plants in the yard may be affected if we have cut down a 25-year-old Chinese Wisteria and painted the stump with Tordon RTU?
We are assuming it has a large root system.
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide can affect plants in the area where you have treated the stump if the stumps roots are in the same area as desirable plant roots.  Untreated trees/plants can occasionally be affected by root uptake of this herbicide through movement into the the topsoil or by excretion of the product from the roots of nearby treated trees. You should not apply Tordon RTU within the root zone of desirables unless such injury can be tolerated. Tordon RTU also is not labeled for use in residential areas due to its long half-life and this possibility of movement in the soil.

  • Asked by Carolyn from New Marshfield
    11/30/2019
    Q
Is Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide effective in winter?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide may be applied at dormant periods but before a hard freeze (25 degrees F). Be careful not to spray so heavily that the herbicide drips off the target species. Retreatment may be necessary for plants that are missed because of dense growth. Keep in mind that this product should not be used on residential properties.

  • Asked by Deborah from South Carolina
    12/03/2019
    Q
Would Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide kill through the cut of a woody stem on Wisteria?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide is not labeled to control Wisteria, so we do not recommend it for this application. Keep in mind, too, that Tordon is not approved for use on residential properties at all. You could use a brush killer such as Crossbow or Fertilome Brush and Stump Killer to control wisteria vines.

  • Asked by Dale from Decatur, Il
    12/05/2019
    Q
If I drill holes in a tree will Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide kill it?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide is a ready-to-use product that is effective in cut surface applications for killing unwanted trees that are listed on the product label and preventing undesirable sprouting of cut trees. This product is best applied to fresh-cut stumps, so you can either make a fresh cut or you can drill new holes and then apply. Please keep in mind that untreated trees/plants can occasionally be affected by root uptake of herbicide through movement into the topsoil or by excretion of the product from the roots of nearby treated trees. Do not apply Tordon RTU within the root zone of desirables unless such injury can be tolerated. Tordon RTU is NOT for use on residential properties.

    Application Methods:

Tree Injection Treatment: Use 1 milliliter of undiluted Tordon RTU solution through the bark
completely around the tree trunk at intervals of 2 to 3 inches between
edges of the injector wounds. Make injections near ground level when
using the tree injector or 2 to 4 feet above the ground when using a
Hypohatchet Injector or similar device. Treatments can be made in any
season. Maples should not be treated during the spring sap flow. With
some difficult to control species such as dogwood, hickory, sugar maple,
bigleaf maple, tanoak, and some firs, application to a continuous cut
rather than to spaced cuts may be more uniformly effective.

Frill or Girdle Treatment: Make a single hack girdle or "frill" of overlapping ax cuts through the bark
completely around the tree as close to the ground as feasible. Spray or
paint the injured surface with undiluted Tordon RTU, using enough volume
    to wet treated areas.

Stump Treatment: Spray or paint the cut surfaces of freshly cut stumps and stubs with
undiluted Tordon RTU. The cambium area next to the bark is the most
    vital area to wet.

  • Asked by Cat from Mobile, Alabama
    12/23/2019
    Q
Will Tordon kill Camphor trees and suckers?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide does not list Camphor on the product label as controlled.  We apologize but do not have anything labeled to be effective against this type of seedling.  I was able to find an article here that states mowing or removing is best on the seedling trees and that glyphosate is effective it just may take a few applications.  Care should be taken to avoid contact with any desirable grass/plants/trees in the area when using it

  • Asked by Jean from Mobile, Al

    Q
If I want to just kill a limb of a large oak tree, can I treat the limb with the axe/injection method using Tordon?
If I want to just kill a limb of a large oak tree, can I treat the limb with the axe/injection method?
    A

Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide can also injure the tree as it can travel throughout the limb into the tree itself.  It would be best to just cut any limb that you need killed/removed
