I want to kill a 1 acre bamboo forest growing under old oak and elm trees

The trees are old and beautiful so we really do not want to risk harm to the trees. We are OK with killing everything under the tree and starting over in 6+ months (after house construction is complete). We cut all the bamboo and continue to spray the shoots with Triclopyr and cut them the next week. Will a soil active product be better and can we apply without any risk to the huge Oaks and Elms?

Answer:

Unfortunately bamboo is very difficult to treat and kill, especially with it being so close to other trees.  Your best option is what you are already doing which is treat the bamboo individually.  If you used a soil sterilizer product it would probably damage or kill the huge trees as well since those products migrate through the soil, so we would not suggest that.
